My problem with John Cusack, Naomi Klein, Jane Smiley and other conspiratorial types is that their conspiracies are often brilliantly thought out and executed. They give a level of intellect and competence that the Bushies just don't deserve. posted 05/16/2008 at 15:04:19

Race (and West Virginia) Makes the Democrat's Obama Gamble Riskier than Ever

Mr. Hutchinson, allow me to make this point. After reading your article you point out that Obama has trouble appealling to less affluent, non-college educated white people. Then you attack "the economy trumps racism" argument by claiming that the economy is uneven. My point is uneven for whom? In other words, hasn't the economy been harshest on those very same people that Obama is having trouble with? And conversely hasn't the economy been kindest (for the most part) on the well educated and affluent that Obama does well with? Yes the economy is uneven, but if you break it down, it boosts "the economy trumps racism" argument that Obama and his campaign is making. posted 05/14/2008 at 14:50:04

Bush In Israel: Standing With One Side

I don't know of any Israeli politician, even Likudniks who will tell you with a straight face that the Palestinians didn't suffer or were not victims of some injustices. Let's get real here. A major reason the Palestinians have suffered is of their own making and the politicization of this issue by Arab leaders. He speaks of 750 thousand Palestinians that fled but what about the nearly same number of Arab Jews that emigrated from neighboring Arab states to Israel? Israel absorbed these people, not only that they welcomed them. I think that if the Palestinians stopped making "the Nabka" the core of their identity and looked toward the future and treated Israel as a neighbor, their quality of life would vastly improve. posted 05/13/2008 at 00:13:48

The point of the post is that Hillary can win white blue collar voters and Obama can't. The problem is that his own facts make the case that neither Clinton nor Obama can win the "angry white male". First I need to make a point. Israel recognizes that it will have to cede most of the 67 occupied land for peace. But... If Gaza taught us anything it is that giving away real estate alone will not make Israel safer. A land-swap deal has to be within a broader framework as a result of negotiations with all the parties to the conflict. This is important because all of the violence is coming from people who think that the eastern border of Israel should be the Mediterranean sea. Having said that there is one unilateral step that Israel should take. There are settlements that are what I call "in your face" settlements. They are purposely located deep within Palestinian population centers and are in no way contiguous with the original state. They exist to get in the Palestinian face if you will. Israel should give an ultimatum to those settlers. The ultimatum should be that if you don't evacuate the settlement will no longer be considered worthy of Israeli protection and the settlers would lose their Israeli citizenship. posted 05/08/2008 at 01:07:36

Rev. Wright and Bill Ayers? They've been "aired out" by the fall they'll be useless as attack points. Rezko could be a problem but if and only if a new bad thing comes out of his trial or something. He should explain that people from around the world are extremely interested in this election. Not because they think it is a sideshow but quite the opposite, America is still the backbone of the civilized world and people know that. People not just here in America but also around the world see the future as either something to look forward to or dread. Al Queda and other extremists are already convinced that the earthly future is the latter. The people that want the earth to flourish as place of prosperity, peace and in harmony with nature are looking to this election with both hope and fear. An Idea for Obama's Public Financing Quandry

This isn't the Jeremia Wright controversy. It doesn't need a brilliant speech like he had given. Like you said yourself, he needs to get in touch with his inner John Edwards and state that he had promised to abide by public financing in the General, but since he has recieved so much from so many he is changing his mind. There is no harm in changing one's view about anything. It is the spinning and doubletalk that gets pols in trouble. As Ann in Ca. stated "just don't avoid" I would also add don't double talk or spin either. posted 04/10/2008 at 15:09:29

Agape and The New Climate Movement

Mr. Isham;
I respect your religion, but I am not a Christian. Frankly, I am a little uncomfortable with the use of Christian principles as a solution for earthly problems like climate change. Don't get me wrong. I am not championing uncivil behavior. I just believe that our earthly problems need an approach that does not put one's particular religion front and center. I do not need to "love" coal companies to see their side of the issue. I just need to be understanding. posted 04/10/2008 at 00:13:11

To Get Elected, Obama Must Cater To White Racists. Really?

After reading The article myself, I too am confused. The speech Obama gave has been seen, literally, by millions of people on YouTube. I think that alone proves his speech was addressing more than"the pundits he so enthralls". The people that fixate on Rev. Wright will not vote for Obama and there is nothing he can do about it. We all just have to hope that enough people will fixate on such trivial matters as the economy, health care, Iraq, and the environment for him to win the presidency. posted 04/09/2008 at 14:34:09

Political Legacy and the 2008 Election

With the exception of your overly harsh assessment of the Carter presidency, I believe this post is spot on. How Douglas Feith and William Safire Transformed an Elvis Sighting Into a Case for War

One of the big mysteries to me is the Anthrax attacks. This is as close as I get to being a tin-foil hat conspiracy theorist.
Consider
1. Four out of the five targets were either major broadcast networks or Democratic senators.
2. The letters pretended to be Arab Terrorists but the letters contained no Arabic.
3. The strain was possibly linked to pentagon owned Anthrax.
4. The right-wing noise machine was quick to connect the Anthrax attacks to Iraq. Stating that this is what just a tiny amount of Anthrax and that Saddam had plenty more (in point of fact he did not)
5. The delivery system was designed to maximize deaths while minimizing the risk to the perpetrator(s). A system so simple and elegant it was as if it was dreamed up by a pentagon think tank.
But then this all could be coincidence. posted 04/09/2008 at 11:20:32

Why Clinton Must Stay In The Race

Actually I disagree with the point that once Hillary loses a primary she needs to be told to drop out. I think that if Hillary loses a primary, she should be given the space to end the campaign on her own volition. There will still be resentment if anybody tells her what to do. Whatever you think of Hillary, she is not stupid. People should let her make her own decision on her own terms. The rest of the article, especially about keeping her campaign an "anti-Obama Free Zone" is spot on. posted 04/08/2008 at 11:20:42

Who Can Beat McCain?

It is not just "who will beat McCain?" It is also who will successfully promote the progressive agenda once in office. That requires
No. 1 a good "coattail effect" in November.
No. 2 using the power of persuasion (think FDR) to get a progressive agenda enacted.
Obama, with is new flock of voters behind him could help with No.1. His oratory skills and with an experienced guy as his VP (Chris Dodd anyone?) could achieve No. 2. I think Clinton could also beat McCain but I just don't think that she would be anything more than a competent president. posted 04/06/2008 at 20:26:06

Bush's Vision, Luck and Historical Legacy

I hate these comparisons to Woodrow Wilson. That is sooo part of the Bush Koolaid. Wilson was motivated by the idealism of a peaceful world working together for the common good. Bush's motivations were a hodgepodge of, as Michael Kinsley put it, "oedipal Tennis" with his father, and the Cheney/Rumsfeld vision of the "Unitary Executive". The Neo-cons and their democracy in the middle east vision was just a useful tool for the administration to promote their war. I don't believe we went in there for oil, but don't give me the crap that Bush was primarily motivated by Wilsonian visionary idealism. I just don't believe it. posted 04/01/2008 at 15:06:23

The loss inbusiness for that week, if people took it to heart, would meet or exceed the 277 grand they exrtacted from this poor couple. They didn't participate in the lawsuit to help win the money. Op-Ed: Obama Was The First To Play Race Card

The author of this piece is Sean Wilentz. This is not the first time he has made this accusation. He wrote a much wordier article in "The New Republic on February 27th of this year. In both articles he claims that a vast pro-Obama conspiracy, aided and abetted by a cabal pro-Obama members of the media, is twisting nearly every criticism of Obama by a Clinton supporter as being either racist or racially motivated. What I find intriguing about this is that he is so far the ONLY one making this accusation. I do not know of any other pundit joining him in this accusation. Is Wright Right About Racism?

Tavis Smiley on "Real Time with Bill Maher" made a point that needs to be brought up every time this Wright controversy keeps coming up. That is this. That Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made this statement in April of 1967. King called the United States "the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today." Here is a link to my source.

The Face of Number 4,000 in Iraq

One of the things that is often ignored is not only did the Main stream media aid and abett this administration into getting us into this war, they also aided and abetted the "mission accomplished" fiction. Acting as volunteer propagandists for the Bush administration until that could no longer be believable. For months after the invasion, for example, NBC Nightly news called their reports on death of G.I.s and suicide bomb attacks as "Iraq Watch". Not war but "watch". This too the media needs to answer for. posted 03/29/2008 at 15:36:32

I sure hope the Clinton's appreciate your tenacity in constantly blogging for her. I know other commenters will refute your points. I just wish that the Clinton's give up. Look, even if they trash Obama to the point of unelectability, the super-delegates will not reward her for her heinous conduct. They will most likely draft Al Gore. So the Clinton's have a choice. I generally agree with the Senator's point but I take issue with the past vs. future theme. Last I checked, neither party possessed a time machine. My point is that both parties are about the future. The difference is the type of future we will have. The republicans offere a future of more concentrated wealth and power to the wealthy and powerful. Free market policies that increase pollution and decrease are personal freedoms. A future of more senseless wars, and less control over our lives and bodies. The problem is that the media considers this "Mad Max/ Soylent Green" path "conservative" and using Government to desperately prevent that "liberal". That's the nonsense. posted 03/25/2008 at 11:10:32

Michigan, Florida, and the L-word

The problem with this post is that the Florida State pols killed any kind of a do-over in their state. And they did this without any significant input or influence from the Obama campaign. Once Fla. killed their do-over, the Michigan do-over became all but doomed. Lets say Michigan had their do-over. Their delegates and superdelegates get seated. Would the Dems make an example of one of the most important swing states in the nation? I don't think so. So they seat Florida. Now you Piss off the state of Michigan because they went through the effort and expense of a primary and for what? Not being treated any better than the rule breaker in the first place? One of two things will happen. Hillary drops out and then the composition of both delegations became academic. Or, they split the delegates 50-50. either way no big deal. posted 03/24/2008 at 15:19:21
