This is a lie. Detroit does know how to get these kinds of mileage. During WWII, manufacturers (aircraft) were getting incredible efficiencies and output at the driveshaft (horsepower) by burning water along with the gas in their engines. Not content to merely read about all this; in 1979 I assembled a '67 Camaro with a '71 Corvette LS engine that got >6mpg unimproved. I water injected that engine and my mileage went up to ~30mpg in mixed environment driving in L.A.. Also, that engine burnt incredibly clean. Clean enough to pass the 1980 CA emissions standard even though as a '68 Camaro all that was required was that I had a PCV valve. Why doesn't Detroit apply this technology today. It's called 'patent shelving'. There were industries that felt threatened by this technology. They bought the patent and shelved it. A special deal was made to bring it out of the shadows for WWII. Don't be surprised. This happens all the time in the corporate world. 'Good enough design' & 'planned obsolescence' are both by-products of our present 'manipulated consumer society'. If this pisses you off, GOOD! Go do something about it.
P.S. You'll find plans for water injecting your own vehicle in, "Mother Earth News." The hurdle is that you need a high performance (high temperature resistant) engine (not aluminum) as the foundation for this inexpensive (>$50 in additional parts) low-tech system. Not too far off at all. Where I'm seeing the difference is in your definition of the military as part of government. This argument may be merely semantic but I still think it's important that we're careful how we define government when we're talking about how to resize it or reshape it. The military goes down in my books as a foreign policy expense. The problem here is that the foreign policy portion of our government has been hijacked by multinational business interests that date back to well before United Fruit annexed Hawaii. The fact that the M.I.C. has institutionalized perpetual war on a global scale is part of the transfer of wealth as I see it. Now Blackwater, on the other hand, is shaping up to be our domestic Praetorian Guard. That is part of government; Roman government. It is the domestic political enforcement arm. In Germany they would have been known as the Gestapo. In fact they're presently (on the very QT) boots on the ground in New Orleans ensuring that the transfer of property wealth there goes smoothly. And I'm very clear on the fact that the neo-cons are I no way shape or form Conservatives. They are fascists. The lesson they learned from WW-II is that they can't use that word and be politically viable. I think perhaps, you're confusing size of government with type of government. What's occurring here is a massive shift of wealth, solace and protection away from the middle and poorer classes of society to a small pool of people with a large pool of money. As for 'homeland security,' I can think of no better way to bankrupt a government while you make this transfer of wealth than with a disorganized mega-agency that is answerable to no-one of importance and is most assuredly NOT answerable to, We the People. So I say we have to drown the neo-con abomination in that bathtub they're so fond of before we're too small to accomplish the task. It's our money and our future they're misappropriating (Stealing) as we talk about it. They're small, very well organized and feudally martial in their nature. They are busy installing their own private army in America as we speak. They are going to be a real bitch to take out.
