Thousands Of Iraqi Troops Flood Into Sadr City

A good article on way we don't see much news from iraq these days. And why is Nancy pelosi singing praises of the surge?

May 20, 2008 -- DO we still have troops in Iraq? Is there still a conflict over there?

If you rely on the so-called mainstream media, you may have difficulty answering those questions these days. As Iraqi and Coalition forces pile up one success after another, Iraq has magically vanished from the headlines.

This is more good news out of Iraq. The surge has reaped many benefits. Iraqi troops are doing much more than in the past. They caught 1,000 Al Queada in Mosul. Al Sadr is being marginalized. Significant legislation is being passed and elections planned for October. Thanks to all the American military for doing an outstanding job. posted 05/20/2008 at 17:49:53

Pentagon Announces Troop Deployments Of 42,000 To Iraq, Afghanistan

By Charles Levinson, USA TODAY
BAGHDAD " Safa al-Lami knew he might be on a suicide mission.
He had taken a taxi into Adhamiya, one of Baghdad's most dangerous neighborhoods. Now, wearing a white headdress that identified him as a Shiite religious leader, al-Lami planned to walk up unannounced to a Sunni mosque and ask whether he could pray alongside his Muslim brothers.

In an area where militias were shooting many Shiites on sight, "I knew there was a big chance I would be killed," al-Lami recalls. "I kept walking toward the shrine, whispering to myself: 'Don't be afraid.' " posted 05/20/2008 at 10:53:50

Actually you are close, the MSM is not reporting on Iraq because of all the good news. (see Tator's post below). If you do a little research that the MSM actually leans left. The Democrats don't want to admit that the surge has worked and now the Iraq political progress and their own Army are taking hold. Maliki just returned from Mosul where they captured 1,000 Al Queada members. Iraq has passed some important legislation and elections will occur in October. For all the naysayers at huffpost, Mr. Barzani is prime minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq.

We Are Making Progress in Iraq
By NECHIRVAN BARZANI
May 20, 2008; Page A21

While the media offers mostly images of violence, and many Americans have grown weary of the war in Iraq, I bring hopeful news to Washington this week as I meet with the administration and members of Congress.

Since 2003, we have built the Kurdistan Region as a model for democracy and a gateway for development for all of Iraq. We are willing partners in this transition toward an Iraqi government that is representative of all its people. Through our peshmerga forces, we provide some of the most effective units against al Qaeda and other terrorist groups. We Kurds are committed to a federal, democratic Iraq at peace within its borders and with its neighbors.

We are working with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and the Iraqi leadership in Baghdad on the difficult issues facing our country. Our relationship with Iraq's federal government has never been better. And progress is being made on an oil law, the status of disputed territories, the proper role for Iraq's neighbors to play, and on relations between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and Turkey. posted 05/20/2008 at 09:49:12

He said his "heart grieves" for McCain"s suffering as a POW. "After that," Gillespie said, "he was somewhat of a celebrity and it went to his head. ¦ I think he was a self-promoter for the last four years (in the Navy.)

This is what he said, he did not say war for 100 years he said presence, it was only the spin of the liberal media that turned it into war for 100 years. That is why he had to "clarify it".

Last month, at a town hall meeting in New Hampshire, a crowd member asked McCain about a Bush statement that troops could stay in Iraq for 50 years.

"Maybe 100," McCain replied. "As long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed, it's fine with me and I hope it would be fine with you if we maintain a presence in a very volatile part of the world where al Qaeda is training, recruiting, equipping and motivating people every single day." posted 05/15/2008 at 18:45:26

"As long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed, it's fine with me and I hope it would be fine with you if we maintain a presence in a very volatile part of the world where al Qaeda is training, recruiting, equipping and motivating people every single day."

Republican presidential front-runner Sen. John McCain on Thursday defended his statement that U.S. troops could spend "maybe 100" years in Iraq -- saying he was referring to a military presence similar to what the nation already has in places like Japan, Germany and South Korea.

There is a big difference between presence and war. posted 05/15/2008 at 18:22:27

New Study Calls Pentagon's 'Embedded' Media Program an Iraq 'Victory' for Bush

CMPA reported: "Majorities of all major groups in the population, including 70 percent of
self-described liberals, now see a "fair amount" or "great deal" of bias in the news. In general,
perceptions of bias rise along with levels of education and political participation."
# "Those who see a liberal tilt outnumber those who detect a conservative bias by more than a
two to one margin. Forty-three percent describe the news media"s perspective on politics as liberal,
compared to 33 percent who see it as a middle of the road, and 19 percent who find it to be
conservative."
# "Even self-described liberals agree: 41 percent see the media as liberal, compared to only 22
percent who find the news to be conservative."
# "These findings challenge the argument of some journalists that bias is purely in the eye of the
beholder. Although conservatives are three times more likely to see liberal rather than
conservative bias, moderates and liberals alike see liberal bias in the media twice as often as they
see conservative bias," CMPA concluded. posted 05/15/2008 at 10:02:17

Fewer U.S. Dead = Less
TV Coverage of Iraq

One year ago, liberal journalists depicted the surge of U.S. troops to Iraq as a certain failure. "A lot of people are going to go to bed tonight terrified," MSNBC"s Chris Matthews opined just minutes after President Bush announced the policy on January 10, 2007. Other journalists were only slightly more subtle. "Many experts warn, it"s too little, too late," NBC"s Jim Miklaszewski argued on the January 8, 2007 Nightly News. The next morning on NBC"s Today, the network"s graphic describing Iraq was "Lost Cause?"

At the same time, leading Democrats left themselves no wiggle room as they, too, denounced the surge. Senator Barack Obama called it "wrong-headed" and countered with a proposal to pull nearly all U.S. troops out of Iraq by March 2008. Senator Hillary Clinton came back from a quick trip to Iraq to declare: "I am opposed to this escalation," while another Democratic candidate, Senator Joe Biden, blasted the troop surge as "a tragic mistake."

One year later, the President"s surge strategy is well on its way to succeeding. The Iraqi parliament has passed several laws meeting required political reconciliation benchmarks. Attacks in Baghdad have fallen up to 80 percent in the past twelve months, Reuters reported February 16. Deaths among Iraqi military forces and civilians have dropped by more than two-thirds, from more than 2,000 per month in early 2007 to fewer than 600 per month since November. posted 05/15/2008 at 09:53:33
Five Years of Slant Against Iraq War Success

Five years ago this week, an international coalition of troops led by the U.S. invaded Iraq, overthrowing Saddam Hussein's tyrannical dictatorship in just three weeks. Since then, Iraqis have voted in free democratic elections to seat a representative parliament; Saddam and several of his henchmen have been tried and convicted in public war crimes trials; and a bloody insurgency fomented by al Qaeda in Iraq is in retreat after a surge of U.S. troops and a shift to more aggressive counter-insurgency tactics.

Analysts at the Media Research Center have studied TV news coverage of the Iraq war from the beginning, even before the first bombs fell on Baghdad in March 2003. The record shows the networks have trumpeted bad news " setbacks for the U.S. coalition and allegations of misdeeds by American troops " while minimizing good news such as the success of the 2007 troop surge and acts of heroism by U.S. soldiers. posted 05/15/2008 at 09:51:44

Gates: Basra operations 'awakened' Iraqis to Iranian involvement
May 13, 2008 13:29 EDT

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- Defense Secretary Robert Gates says recent operations by Iraqis in Basra are what "awakened" the Iraqis to what he calls "the magnitude of Iranian meddling in Iraq."

Gates, speaking today to journalists in Colorado, said the Basra operations led to the discovery of substantial supplies of Iranian-supplied weapons. When asked if the U.S. would at some point feel compelled to take military action against Iran, Gates said that the U.S. already has a number of activities under way "to deal particularly with what the Iranians were doing" to support Shiite militias.

U.S. officials say the militias are funded and trained by Iranians.

Gates says the U.S. is being "very aggressive" in going after those who "are interfering or supplying weapons from Iran."

Now, Coalition forces are bringing aid to about 150 men and boys that came to rebuild and continue securing the area. Soldiers provided shovels, wood, bricks, mortar, cement and basic living essentials such as food and water recently.

Among the many uncertainties are whether the government, criticized for incompetence at the start of the operation, can maintain the high level of troops here. But in interviews across Basra, residents overwhelmingly reported a substantial improvement in their everyday lives.

"The circle of fear is broken," said Shaker, owner of a floating restaurant on Basra"s famed Corniche promenade, who, although optimistic, was still afraid to give his full name, as were many of those interviewed.

Hopes for a similar outcome in Baghdad"s Sadr City district were undercut when an Iraqi armored unit was struck by three roadside bombs on Sunday, one day after a cease-fire there was negotiated. posted 05/12/2008 at 12:20:20
Some news you won't see on Huffpost

BAGHDAD--There's a place in this city, amid the snarled checkpoints and mazes of blast walls and general anxiety, where families still gather for picnics, teenage boys kick around soccer balls, young couples canoodle furtively under trees and children bury their faces in cotton candy.

Zawra Park, a sprawling, 250-acre public park in central Baghdad, is one of the few open spaces left in the capital. It's seeing a resurgence of visitors, thanks to improved security in central Baghdad, even as car bombings and mortar attacks continue to strike just a few blocks away.

U.S. armed forces have helped to refurbish the park, spending $2.5 million over the past two years to upgrade restrooms, sewage, security equipment and other facilities -- primarily in a small, 17-acre zoo housing a small collection of animals. The work was done by Army soldiers with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division, which is responsible for security in the section of the city that includes the park. posted 05/12/2008 at 12:19:17
I thought we were taking their oil?

BAGHDAD: Iraq will invite 35 international oil companies to bid for oil and gas service contracts soon, an oil ministry spokesman said on Monday.

Iraq holds the world's third-largest oil reserves and needs billions of dollars of investment to overhaul energy infrastructure and increase oil and gas output after years of sanctions and war.

"The ministry will declare the first round of bidding in the coming period," Asim Jihad, the spokesman, said. "The oil ministry is acting urgently to develop oil fields and increase crude production."

Fields from all regions of Iraq would be offered in the first round, he said, declining to give specific details.

Oil is Iraq's main source of income, and boosting output is key to earning the cash the country needs for reconstruction. Iraq produces around 2.3 million barrels per day of oil, and has 115 billion barrels of proven crude reserves.

IIt is pure supply and demand. The demand that China and other third world nations have put on the oil supplies and the refusal of OPEC to increase supply is the cause. The other cause is not enough refineries to make gas. Show me some facts to back up your claims.

t's possible the critics' perception of the problem as coming mainly from the supply side is unduly influenced by the analysis of economists overseas. From the perspective of the other developing countries, their inflation problem stems from the rise of China and the surge in its demand for oil and other sources of energy, steel-making ingredients and other minerals, and agricultural commodities.

Chavez is pushing to make Venezuela a dictatorship with him filling the role of Stalin. posted 05/09/2008 at 10:52:00
WASHINGTON, May 9 (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's ties to Colombian rebels are deeper than previously thought, a U.S. intelligence official said on Friday following an analysis of files on a dead guerrilla leader's laptops.

The files appear to be authentic and underscore U.S. concerns about Chavez's quest for more influence in the region, the official said. Their discovery in March raised speculation the United States would put Venezuela on its list of state sponsors of terrorism.

"It (the analysis) reinforces the U.S. government's strong position that Chavez is attempting in various ways to project his influence throughout the region and that influence in some ways could be construed as destabilizing," the intelligence official said.

CARACAS (AFP) " Venezuela's proven crude oil reserves had swelled to 130 billion barrels as of late April, marking a rise of 30 billion from its prior estimate, energy and oil minister Rafael Ramirez said Thursday.

Ramirez, who also runs Venezuela's state oil giant Petroleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA), made the announcement at a regional energy summit as world oil prices continued to strike record highs.

"As of April 2008 we have increased by 30 billion barrels of oil our additional proven crude reserves" north of the Orinoco River, Ramirez said.

The energy minister said the South American state, which is a key member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), hopes to have its proven oil reserves certified at 235 billion barrels by 2009.

Venezuela's new estimate of oil reserves puts the country in second place behind oil-rich Saudia Arabia in the league of countries controlling the world's biggest reserves.

Saudi Arabia has proven oil reserves of around 264 billion barrels, followed by Canada with 174 billion, Iran with 136 billion and Iraq with 115 billion barrels.

The leftist government of President Hugo Chavez has sought to tighten the state's control over the oil industry in recent years as more oil has been discovered.

A law passed by Chavez's government forced multinationals operating in the country to cede a majority stake in their operations to PDVSA.

Rocketing world oil prices have enabled Chavez's government to reap a windfall in oil export earnings. posted 05/09/2008 at 10:47:23

Post-War Veteran Suicides May Exceed Combat Deaths: U.S.

Carolinas senators pitch GI bill update GOP trio breaks from earlier bipartisan plan co-sponsored by 57 Momentum is gathering for an update to the Montgomery GI bill.

But three Carolinas senators are going against the tide with legislation they offered last week as an alternative to one that has 57 bipartisan co-sponsors.

Sens. Richard Burr, R-N.C., and Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., are joined by Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the presumptive Republican nominee for president.

Their bill has a unique feature that would allow service members to transfer some of the educational credit they earn to other members of their family, a portion that would increase the longer they stayed in the military.

Burr said he's opposed to the bill sponsored by Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., because it bases the amount of the benefit on the most expensive public school in the state where a military member chooses to enroll.

He said the benefit would be about $5,200 to go to school in North Carolina, based on tuition at UNC Chapel Hill, but it would be more than $10,000 to go to school in Michigan, a figure determined by an art and design program.

"Two GIs, same commitment, getting two incredibly different packages," Burr said. "I believe one of our responsibilities is to treat everyone equitably, the GIs themselves, but also the state." posted 05/05/2008 at 19:04:58
