I came to the United States in 1970 on a foreign journalist visa before Philippine President Marcos declared martial law. Actually it was an escape from looming legal prosecution and political persecution after my first book, "Behind The Barricades", came off the press and angered the would-be dictator who blacklisted me. I would have been jailed or killed if martial law had caught up with me.
When martial law was declared in 1972, it followed me to Los Angeles, California, where the dictator's gestapos disguised as Consulate personnel harassed me as PhilPress editor and publisher.
As an exile I was the first to file for political asylum. But for 13 years the INS put my case in the dead file because the U.S. did not want to displease a pro-U.S. foreign dictator. So I dragged the INS to court in Los Angeles to force a decision. The judge ruled in my favor and granted me political asylum.
The federal prosecutor who had wanted to extradite me to Manila, after the trial eventually asked me to autograph his copy of my second book, the "President's Lovey Dovie", which I had presented as evidence in my defense.
In 1983 I was tried in absentia in Manila by a Philippine military kangaroo court for sedition and rebellion, or on framed-up charges, which I considered a great honor, along with Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. (and a few others) who was subsequently assassinated at the Manila airport upon his return from U.S. exile. Aquino could have been the next President in a free election.
In 1984 I wrote my second book, the "President's Lovey Dovie", on Catalina Island. It was well received like my first one in Manila. In November 2007 I finished my third nonfiction book relating to President Bush's Global War on Terror, which was put on hold because of time constraint.
In May 2008, I just finished my 4th book, "U.N. Should Indict Bush and Cheney for War Crimes". Hopefully it is published in 2009.
I am also trying to break into Hollywood with three finished screenplays and a 2-hour documentary, "Aquino Journey to Martyrdom". They are still in the Hollywood market where dreams can come true.
