California Gay Marriage Ban Overturned: Major Updates

Thank you - beautifully put and very true! posted 05/15/2008 at 15:49:38
It's neither, something you would know if you cared to let go of your own prejudices and get educated. posted 05/15/2008 at 15:48:02
This is great (as a gay Californian in a long-term committed relationship). Also nice that NY will respect it (we've been considering relocating).

The problem is that about 20 states have amended their constitutions to forbid gay marriage. So the day when the whole US allows it is many decades away.

That's the case, it seems for many federations; the EU will probably take decades for laggards like Poland and Ireland, their version of our Alabama and Mississippi, to catch up with the more progressive countries like the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain. posted 05/15/2008 at 15:25:28

Obama Hamas Smear: Clinton Says It Shouldn't Be Taken Seriously

I've never had a problem with Hillary's attacks on Obama - they are merely bringing up, and putting to rest, issues that McCain would've done so later, at far greater damage. Obama's been no angel, either - but again, that's fine, too.

The problem is her *judgment* (remember the Iraq war resolution) and her, frankly, *delusions* about her experience (her role during her husband's administration, the Bosnia sniper-fire vivid story, etc). Those are fatal flaws that disqualify her from the presidency, and two flaws that Obama does not have.

That said, she has plenty to contribute to this country and to Obama's campaign after the convention, an opportunity I hope and believe she will take. posted 05/14/2008 at 21:42:26

Fascinating story. Just read Stumbling on Happiness, which explains the science behind happiness.

8 Of 10 Say US Headed The Wrong Way

What needs to pounded home, then, is that McCain represents the wishes of 2/10 Americans, NOT HALF.

I'd love to have side-by-sides of him and Obama debating with Obama covering 80% of the screen, and McCain 20% of the screen. Why does McCain get equal coverage when he's a borderline-fringe candidate?

Arianna got this right in her book. It has to be pointed out again and again and again and again. The GOP is completely out of touch with 80% of Americans!

If you think:
- the Iraq war was a good idea
- rising prosperity is only a good thing when you're already rich

Love it. I watched all of these.

It is DELUSIONAL to think the US will have peaceful relations with Iraq over the next "100 years" that the US has enjoyed with Germany and Japan after WW2 - two *developed* nations that aren't plagued with sectarian tensions and situated in a world region known for terrorism.

I like how you mention the feeling that news shows always feel the need to show "both sides". The Simple Arithmetic of Republican Failure

Obama's Ayers Issue

I'm beginning to think Obama will have to live in a bubble and shun all human contact. If he so much as bumps into someone at a crowded train station, he's assumed to have endorsed everything that person has done.

But seriously, HOW DO YOU UNITE IF YOU TURN YOUR BACK ON EVERYONE YOU DISAGREE WITH? If you want to have an inclusive national dialogue about things that matter in this country, you have to include all voices, including those you not only disagree with, but those who say offensive, repellent things.

Would it be possible to have a national dialogue about gay marriage without including those who think homosexuality is a sick perversion? No. They are numerous and they need to speak their piece. I'm gay and I understand this.

Only talking to people who agree with you is called "groupthink" and it's what got us into the Iraq debacle. GWB is certainly a person who doesn't associate, in any way, with people who don't agree with him fully. posted 04/19/2008 at 12:10:14

It's Not Weightism. You're Just Obese.

Exactly. The health insurance companies alone are the biggest, non-value-adding drain to the health care system.

But I don't think Ridley or anyone else who complains about the health care costs that the obese incur are really bothered about that. There are other choices (like driving, engaging in sports, etc) that will lead to a much higher rate of injury and related health care costs.

The problem is that people don't want to see fat people. Conservatives wail about fat people not treating their body like a temple, and liberals, ever-sensitive to what Europe thinks, are sick of hearing about how fat we all are.

Living in Los Angeles, which is where I presume John Ridley lives, the focus on thinnness is completely an aesthetic issue, esp in his industry.

This has nothing to do with health & costs. It has everything to do with looks. posted 04/07/2008 at 23:19:37
Oh, give me a break. i'm thin and am sick and tired of sanctimonious morons ranting about the obese.

It's strange that the obese should have so much control over their weight, but 98% of weight loss regimens result in long-term failure. Yes, 2/3 of Americans are just inherently lazy and just don't exercise the same amazing self-discipline that the rest of us exhibit. Even though many of them eat less and exercise more than we do.

The fact that you and I are thin with relatively little effort doesn't mean it's like that for everyone. How arrogant of you.

And I find this health care cost argument the most insidious. Why don't you tell people that engage in extreme sports that you're sick of footing their bill?

I take public transportation and am sick of car drivers raising my premiums by *choosing* to enter a two-ton moving death machine despite all the warnings that they're dangerous. All those car accident victims in emergency rooms - well, their laziness got them there. Right? I wish the attention on Wright would go away. This is the biggest "tempest in a teapot" I've ever seen, although I guess the media is stirring this as much as possible to not look like Obama lapdog anymore. posted 03/31/2008 at 07:54:19

A Defense Of Jeremiah Wright

As far as religious nuts go, this guy is harmless.

If the worst things he said were condemning this country and peddling conspiracy theorists against the government, then he's already far better than most preachers, many of who preach outright bigotry against *people*.

Bill Clinton To Obama Campaign: "Let's Just Saddle Up And Have An Argument"

I hope Bill Clinton and my fellow HuffPo posters (and editors!) please embrace the wisdom of this quote from Obama:

"We cannot solve the problems of America if everytime somebody somewhere does something stupid, that everybody gets up in arms and forgets about the war in Iraq and we forget about the economy." posted 03/26/2008 at 17:09:44

Obama & Co. Stop Taking the Bait

No chance. The country is still about evenly divided between the two. The *world* is divided between the two. There is not enough time to convince all of the HRC supporters to switch sides. Most won't, anyway.

Hillary should realize that Obama has more delegates, popular votes, and states than her, and she won't be able to upset him in any one of these 3 metrics. She should bow out gracefully, lend her full support to his campaign, and ensure that we won't have to live through another 4 years of Republican hell (at least).

We all respect persistence, but Hillary can *not* win, so hanging on is just pissing away support for the Democratic ticket, and campaign dollars. posted 03/27/2008 at 00:14:57

Paul Krugman Slams...Hillary

I completely agree.

His blog is terrific, and he's an equal-opportunity critic of all bad policy.

I like him on Bill Maher as well - he keeps on-topic and doesn't sell out dialogue in favor of cheers from the peanut gallery. posted 03/26/2008 at 17:37:34

The Latest Clinton Canard

Very well said.

I was a Hillary supporter, and I still like her, but I voted for Obama and think HIllary's continued efforts are more about stroking her ego than serving the best interests of Democrats.

*SHE CAN'T WIN*. We have to say this again and again, until she gets it and she throws her support behind Barack.

Each day she stays in the race at this point means less money to fight McCain, less momentum and confidence behind a unified Democratic party, and more negative publicity against Obama (who will be our nominee). posted 03/27/2008 at 00:20:01

I'm glad to hear this news.

Hitchens: Obama Sold Out His Grandmother

Christopher Hitchens is a great writer, and a profound thinker with a wry sense of humor, but his chief fault is when he doesn't know when to quit. He will belabor a point to death - maybe he's paid by the word?

I'm a "mild" Obama supporter (I like him as the least of all evils, but he has never brought tears to my eyes, and I doubt he ever will) and I have to say his "calculations" on having to distance himself from Wright, and saying some painful truths about his own grandmother (whom he loves) are neither wicked nor worthy of the cynical contempt that Hitchens heaps on him, paragraph after paragraph.

I know he's got books to sell, and, even so, he tends enjoy pissing people off, but I have to say this is yet another column by him that made me think he might be overdue for a vacation. posted 03/26/2008 at 00:22:11

Yeah, they should be served a nice organic greens salad with some poached salmon.

What planet are you on? They are in PRISON. The nutraloaf might not look appetizing but it's pretty damn nutritious. I don't find it particularly disgusting-sounding at all. It almost sounds like a Gardenburger. posted 03/23/2008 at 17:27:16

McCain Gaffe -- It Wasn't on Our Minds

McCain could admit that he feasts on fetuses for breakfast every morning, and no one would notice or care. Why? Because "our side" is embroiled with the Hillary/Obama battle.

I think we'll get the opportunity to focus on McCain once our nominee has been chosen (i.e. when, hopefully, Hillary bows out gracefully). posted 03/24/2008 at 15:02:56

What Barack Obama Could Not (and Should Not) Say

I agreed with your post, Sam, but I'm afraid you're kind of preaching to the choir here, if you don't mind the pun.

Most people can not escape the praise/punishment dichotomy taught to them as children, and use it to frame their adult behavior. The idea of a universe without purpose (at least one that we can not definitively understand) is too terrible for most people to fathom, so they are far more comfortable believing myths. The human brain is wired to perceive reality as it wants to perceive it, over what it really is.

Most of Christian theology is perfectly innocuous and stresses good behavior; I, as a (hard) agnostic, am comfortable with Christians turning the other cheek, giving to the poor, being tolerant of people different from them, etc. The problem is that most of the people beating their chests about their Christian faith act the *least* Christian.

Furthermore, there is nothing to suggest these people would be decent people if religion didn't exist. They'd invent or contort another belief system to conveniently confirm their own bigoted, hateful behavior. posted 03/22/2008 at 13:12:04
Exactly. The Christian ethos guides socialist principles of taking care of the poor and less fortunate - highly ironic considering socialist Europe constantly rails against the Christian U.S., and U.S. Christians rail against socialism as one of the world's worst evils. European values have much stronger Christian underpinnings than do American values. posted 03/22/2008 at 13:06:30

Since it's unlikely McCain will ever rise up to address the issue of this guy, or his embracing of Jerry "we deserved 9/11 for not treating gays worse" Falwell, or the other preacher who called the Catholic church the "great whore", this would be a great opportunity for Obama to deal with some of the persistent myths in the black community, and why they do persist.

He's done this already in the last debate (ridiculous black antagonism towards Jews) and in his speech this past week, but it's worth taking hold of the dialogue and lead it forward. It's an uncomfortable subject but dialogue helps more that silence and avoidance. posted 03/21/2008 at 17:48:29

I agree. The most important point is IGNORING the "toxic curiosities" and focusing our energy on the misleading, harmful fabrications made by our ELECTED OFFICIALS.

We have to go on the attack, OFTEN, on McCain. The Republicans are already fomenting FUD about Obama and Jeremiah Wright.
