Debate Analysis: ABC Asked Most Scandal Questions, Obama Was Clear Target

"I mean, you will need to go to Huffington Post and, especially, Daily Kos to read up what I may consider consistent positive reporting on Obama."

This is very true. That is why we (those who pay attention to things like the fact that 35,000 people attended a single rally for Obama in Philadelphia two days ago) need to get the word out. None of the other candidates, the current ones or those who have dropped out, Republican or Democrat, have seen anything like this level of public support. It is uprecedented, and it is not being reported by the MSM. In fact, the same day that 35,000 showed up for that rally, another 20,000 marched and chanted 'Obama, Obama' in Philadelphia. That went unreported. This says it all. posted 04/20/2008 at 22:58:15

Jon Stewart Rips ABC Debate

The second to last sentence should read '..I'll pick one whose religious beliefs are NOT tied to one of the more extreme, lunatic sects.' posted 04/20/2008 at 14:50:05
I'm not necessarily singling out the LDS here. I think all forms of organized religion pander to fear and ignorance and prey on the weak minded. All require a departure from reason, and all serve to inhibit free thought. And worst of all, almost all organized religions invest their leaders with extremely dangerous levels of power over their followers, and this power is always abused. The LDS is a classic example, along with most of Christian sects.

I'm not saying that spirituality per se is the bad element, but specifically organized religions and those who derive legitimacy from them are con artists, delusional, or both. When a politician such as Romney claims to hold the 'faith of my fathers', that to me is intrinsically a bad thing. He is using religion to cement political support. Alas, he is not alone in this. In America, where so few are taught to think critically, every candidate has to at least feign religiosity if they want to get enough votes to get elected. I would much prefer an intelligent candidate who is not religious, but given the sorry state of our electorate, that is not possible. So if I have to chose a candidate, I'll pick one whose religious believes are tied to one of the more extreme, lunatic sects. LDS ranks right up there with other fundementalist, evangelical, and apocolyptic christian sects. posted 04/20/2008 at 14:46:12
"What's not to like about Romney..."

How about the fact that he's a Republican for starters. The party that has systematically dismantled our democracy and driven us into a $24 billion/month war without end. How about the fact that this man is a Mormon. Mormonism is a particularly vile form of Christianity, and if he believes in half the BS that Mormonism holds true, a President Romney would be disastrous. posted 04/19/2008 at 22:22:08

Very well said. The fact that 35,000 real people (not manufactured poll #s, doctored votes, or paid off superdelegates), all showed up in Philadelphia for an Obama rally proves to me that the people of this country are overwhelmingly behind Obama. If he doesn't get the Democratic nomination, a majority of Americans will reach a level of disillusionment that hasn't been seen in our lifetimes, not since the great depression. I predict disaster for the Democratic Party, and the country, should we get a Clinton-McCain contest in November. McCain will likely win, and America will continue to lose. posted 04/19/2008 at 16:12:33

Obama Draws Largest Crowd Of His Campaign At Philadelphia Rally

"Having said that, this is one of the libs' most laughable gaffes; they equate intelligence with leadership & success."

Oh I see. That's why universities use standardized test scores (IQ tests) as their most important basis for admissions, by far. High intelligence is an absolute requirement for leadership in the modern world.

You, like so many in this country, are the product of a culture so dumbed down, so intellectually lazy, so self-centered and morally crippled, and so delusional that you cannot face the fact that ability matters, over all else, in qualifying one to be a leader at the level of President. You would like to think that someone like yourself (a selfish, myopic bumpkin like Bush, for example) can do the job of President. So what do you do? You vote for that corrupt dumb@ss. In fact, you even vote for him a second time, in the face of all the predictable disasters that were obvious by the end of his first term. Your idiotic choice has wrought havoc on everyone in this country and on the rest of the world. So no, it is no 'laughable gaffe' that equates intelligence with leadership and success. Intelligence, while not the only thing necessary, is a minimal requirement for Presidential leadership. posted 04/19/2008 at 23:53:11

There is a practical reason for not doing this. I'm a scientist. I do experiments. I cannot design an informative, useful experiment based on 'faith'. I must plan and execute the next set of experiments on the most recent credible set of data that I have, not on hunches or opinions.

Instead you should say "Okay, I'm an elitist. But I'll kick the sh*t out of anyone who dares to call me a snob." That is how an average slob like me would say it. Thomas Frank On Obama: Not That Controversial

I agree. That is what most people are missing. Obama revealed his true thoughts on this subject, which was not a necessarily politically safe thing to do in America. Religion in its most simplified form is simply magical thinking, providing some form of hope when all else has turned to sh*t. As such, clinging to religion, affinity for guns, and xenophobia are bad things, period. Intelligent people (like Obama) know this. He was describing these things as symptoms of a segment of American society that has been screwed over. He had to back-peddle and reframe his initial statement to say that these things (religion, tradition, etc) are actually good things. They are not, and unfortunately no candidate for President in this country would ever get elected if they stated this truth. Obama said it accidently, and I hope that if he gets elected, he will act on that knowledge by trying to alleviate the economic conditions that drive people to xenophobia, religion and guns. posted 04/14/2008 at 14:04:43

You are on to something here. I wish more people could see this. I know of many people here in the evangelical south who view the world through this sick prism. They can easily overlook the failings of the Bush government, and more importantly their own, as long as they keep in mind that it will all end soon with the coming of Jesus, who will of course redeem them and incinerate all those who oppose them. I see this kind of self-comforting rationalization at work every day, as people watch their hopes and dreams for themselves and their children evaporate, as they lose their houses, their higher paying jobs, their marriages, their health, their children's chances at a better future, etc. Something tells me that this 'dispensationalist psychosis' has probably been around for a long, long time through human history. posted 04/10/2008 at 09:19:04

Yes, millions of Americans are disatisfied with Bush Inc. and the condition to which they have brought the country, but the vast majority of these people will not connect all the dots that Weber just did. They will go back to their TVs and beer (booze, tranquilizers, prozac, etc.), and roll over for whatever looms on the horizon for our country. And don't forget, there are still millions in this country who support Bush and the rotted Republican Party without question. They will never connect the collapse of America with anything other than what they're fed by Rush Limbo, Bill Krystol, O'Reilly, etc. That is, they will find a way to link the hard times to come to Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Jimmy Carter, and especially the next Democratic President. That kind of persecution is a function of education. We are a nation of myopic bumpkins, for the most part. Whether we have 3 car garages, or live in public housing or rented mobile homes, we are not thinkers. Our tolerance for different religions was established by a group of elites, at the founding of our country. Some of these men (notably Jefferson) were not big proponents of organized religions, but knew that the general population could never handle a world view significantly different from their own. They wisely protected the population from itself, having experienced (or read about) thedevastation caused by religious warring in Europe. I am convinced that leaders such as our founding fathers are not prevalent in our government today and if it were put to some sort of public referendum, religious tolerance would be abolished for all but the majority religion. posted 04/09/2008 at 09:51:31

No. Liberals are dangerous to those in power because we think for ourselves and demand the truth. As for taking responsibility, don't make me laugh. Taking care of yourself and your immediate family only, is not taking responsibility. Not even close. It was hardly enough even when we were an agrarian society consisting of scattered farming villages, and it's nowhere near enough now in the modern, urbanized, interconnected world. Today, you have a hell of a lot more to think about than just the four walls that surround you. You have responsibility to your community, to your country, and the world at large. I never said I didn't believe that God exists. I cannot say with certainty, one way or another, and neither can anyone else. Only that organized religions have set themselves up as salesmen for God. Religions have capitalized on the unknown to acquire power and riches, while suppressing peoples' freedoms (of thought and action). Religions have promoted blind obedience to authority, which in turn has opened the door to the vast majority of abuses that humans have perpetrated on one another, going back to our earliest history. There is no validity to the specifics of any of the world's religions. It's all made up as we go along.

Acknowledging the reality that organized religion is a massive con game does not mean that a person believes all existence came from nothingness, necessarily. That is an entirely different question. posted 03/29/2008 at 12:02:39
