Killing the Dream

Kinda confused, as there are several homes in my sister's neighborhood going for $100,000.
Are you saying that folks can't save up $3,500 for the down payment on those houses?
And yet the bank, government, and seller, are supposed to believe they can afford a monthly payment, plus insurance, taxes, upkeep, etc.? Say $900 a month. Make that payment (minus the identical payments on where they currently live) to themselves for 6 months and buy a house.
Oh wait, you mean they want to move into $250,000 homes so they need to save up $8,750? Same thing.

Prove to yourself you can make the payments before you have to make the payments.

Delaying the time before they buy so they can raise that extra 0.5% is not the end of the world. If they'd tried to make it 10%... then that be different. posted 05/10/2008 at 09:08:50

Elections Can't Really be Fair, Free and Accurate if Eligible Voters Can't Vote

I always heard it was Republicans rounding up the homeless and senile to vote (Voters 65 and older represented 33 percent of the GOP electorate in FL). Maybe it is both sides doing it, or could it all just be rumors spread by Independents?

While I agree that an informed voter is the best thing for the country, I tend to think there is very little difference between a 90 year old person in the advanced stages of Alzheimer, and someone who will back their party no matter what. I mean, one person thinks they are voting for Teddy Roosevelt, while the other is clueless (He can't stand this war, and the poor economy, or the government wanting to look into every thing he does, so he'll vote for the guy who promises more of the same). posted 05/10/2008 at 00:58:42

Madonna Makes Out With Girl On Stage (PHOTOS)

Odd, as I see several that are not exactly flattering to Madonna.
Could it be something with your browser not refreshing.

At the same time, I am sitting here wondering why anyone cares about who anyone else is making out with. I guess this would be news if either one of them had publicly been against same sex relations before this... But last I heard Madonna has always been pretty open about being bisexual. Not a clue who the other woman is. posted 05/07/2008 at 18:40:52

Vog (Volcanic Smog) Kills Plants, Casts A Haze Over Hawaii

Sally Ancheta of the American Lung Association of Hawaii said people should stay inside when the vog is bad. But she added: "I would not recommend anybody leaving. It's too good of a place to live."

I don't normally think that a place I have to stay indoors several days a week as a good place to live. Especially if it is affecting one's health. And since the volcano has been erupting since 1983, I don't think it is going away soon. posted 05/08/2008 at 08:50:12

Will Hillary Repeal the Clinton Gas Tax?

Simple math:
Saving $0.18/gallon means:
$1.80 on 10 gallons (for which you will pay more then $35.00) say, 120 miles in a Hummer or 460 miles in a Prius
$18.00 on 100 gallons (for which you will pay more then $350.00) 1,200 miles in a Hummer or 4,600 in a Prius
$180.00 on 1000 gallons (for which you will pay more then $3,500.00) 12,000 miles in a Hummer or 46,000 miles in a Prius

Do you know of anyone except Semi drivers who drive 12,000 miles in 15 weeks, much less 46,000 miles?

Who is saving money? The folks with the biggest gas guzzlers. The folks we need to get rid of their SUVs and replace it with something fuel efficent.

Want to make this tax break make a difference? Make it so that 18 wheelers get an $0.18 refund for each mile they drive for 15 weeks (They fill out log books, and have to turn them in already, so it no new expense for them). Lowering cost for them will lower cost they pass on to all other makets. posted 05/06/2008 at 14:23:40

One Man's Quest To Save $100 From The 'Gas Tax Holiday'

Lets brake it down into nice simple terms.
For every 10 gallons of gas you buy you will save $1.84
If you buy 100 gallons you save $18.40
If you buy 1,000 gallons you save $184.00
And if gas is at $3.50/gallon then you spent $3,500.00 for that 1,000 gallons.

If you get 12mpg that 1,000 gallons will move your Hummer 12,000 miles....of course, how many of us drive 12,000 miles in 15 weeks? That is 114 miles per day, seven days a week, for 15 weeks. The $184.00 savings might cover all the sodas you are drinking as you drive around.
If you get 20mpg that 1,000 gallons will move you 20,000 miles in 15 weeks, or 190 miles per day. Professional courier, or FedEx driver? posted 05/06/2008 at 11:16:06

Polyamory: The New Monogamy?

Given that 50% of marriages end in divorce, and the children wind up with a step-parent or five, and the number of single mothers, who are not removed from the dating market, what is the difference?

In a Poly family a child will often have 3 or more adults looking after and loving them. And often it means more stability as when a Poly relationship ends, 1 of 3 or more adults (33% or less) leaves the family, as compared to Mono relationships where 50% of the parents leave.

"happiness in marriage. as in all relationships, requires some compromise, humility and self-sacrifice."
Indeed it does. And in a Poly relationship with even more people there is an even greater need for them. The standard Poly mantra on the secret to a successful relationship is "Communicate, communicate, communicate". posted 05/04/2008 at 23:40:39
"It's just that polyandry is so much rarer (i.e. I've never heard of any actual cases of it)."
I know of four families which have one woman and multiple men. In all of them the female is an Alpha, and the men Betas.

"I've seen several attempts at such relationships by friends and acquaintances, and all of them failed..."
How many of your friends have failed in their Mono relationships? I am willing to bet almost all of them are not still with the first person they started dating. Why should Poly, which involves more people/complexity, be expected to do better? At the same time I am in my 12th year with my current primary, and my 5th with one secondary, and 1 year with the other. My primary has been with her secondary for 4 years. So, it can work if you can get the right mixtures.

It's kind of funny, but in the circles I run in most of the double-digit-long relationships are either open, Poly or both. posted 05/04/2008 at 23:22:47

Man Arrested In Polygamy Compound Raid

If a woman has one husband how do you know who the father is?

But then we get into the fun of which is more important: who is the biological father, or who the kids call Dad (or in this example Dads). posted 04/07/2008 at 22:41:50
So rather then Polyandry or Polygamy, what happens if they tried Polyamory?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyamory
Not that I can see any of the current major religions embracing a system that allows freedom of choice.

Also I see a small flaw in your logic: You are suggesting that every man wants children, and that the woman would have no say in how many children she has. So if a woman has 2 husbands, and 5 children... is this really different then my neighbor who is on her 4th husband, and has 7 children (plus the 3 he has from an earlier marriage)? posted 04/07/2008 at 22:19:43

The Biofuel Boom

If you use wind, water, solar and geothermal to create the electricity that charges up the batteries then less pollution will be created then if the vehicle is powered by gas.

Another alternative is to use a small gas/diesel engine (say 15hp) to charge up the battery. Less pollution will be produced then if you used a 150hp engine to power the vehicle. With this set up you can hit 200-300 mpg.

Bio-diesel is an option... if you can get the car companies to design correctly. Some high school kids built a 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds sports car that get 60mpg. There is a guy who converted Niel Young's 1965 Lincoln to bio-diesel, and it now gets close to 100mpg. Most of the cost of the conversion was labor and buying a diesel engine to replace the gas engine. Yes, they are creating pollution, but it is far less then what it was before.

The idea is that if you use the correct method of energy production for the area (Solar in the southwest, water by the oceans, geothermal is available every where if you drill, wind where it is windy) then use this to supplement what is currently in use, and even replace it when you can. Don't do it all right this second, phase into it as you can, say a gigawatt at a time. Just don't wait for the perfect solution before you act. posted 04/05/2008 at 03:21:31

Less Monogamy, More Fun

Where as to me it sounds more like she has figured out that she can still fill her physical needs, even if she hasn't yet found a person or persons who fills her emotional needs.

I am not saying that having both needs filled at the same time is not better, just that they do not have to happen at the same time, or with the same person. posted 04/05/2008 at 02:42:33

Jesse Ventura Unloads: The Parties, The Chickenhawks, And His Revolution

Suggestion: A third house with 200 seats which is seated by percentage of votes gained nation wide.
If a party gets at least 0.5% of the national vote, they get a seat.

Base the votes on voting for the party not a person. This allows the party to seat the best person, no matter where they live, or if they just lost out on a seat in a different house..Also means that if someone has to step down or is involved in a scandle they can easily be replaced.

Make it so that any party can run by getting at least 20,000 signitures from anywhere in the nation. This allows a group of one million people scattered across the nation to have a political voice. posted 04/02/2008 at 12:58:17

Top 10 Myths Keeping Hillary in the Race

"2. Obama is not the winner he is ahead. So if a team is behind before the forth quarter they should forfeit. Who with a straight face would ever say that?"

You are correct in a way. I mean if Obama breaks his jaw and has to have his mouth wired shut, then Clinton just might sweep every remaining primary by more then 60% for the win.
But this ain't NASCAR, so the odds of Obama blowing his engine this late in the race are pretty low. posted 04/01/2008 at 14:04:23
