Bobby Jindal: Vetting McCain's VP Prospects

Chemical "castration" (like real, physical castration) may diminish the offender's sex drive. But if it leaves him greatly embittered toward women, I'm inclined to think that his hostility will be manifested other ways, e.g., murder. posted 06/28/2008 at 13:57:31

McCain: I 'Didn't Love America' Until Held Prisoner (VIDEO)

And unless you have been a prisoner of war, the same could be said about you.

I won't say that McCain doesn't love America; that would be a smear.

But it *is* a fact that he's never held a non-US-taxpayer paid job in his entire adult life: first as a Navy pilot, and then as a Senator.

And it is highly likely that he gained preferential admission to the Naval Academy based on his father and grandfather being four star Admirals. That he graduated from Annapolis ranked near the bottom of his class suggests that he didn't deserve to be there.

Like GW Bush, and using John Fogarty's satiric phrase, they are both "Fortunate Son(s)." posted 06/20/2008 at 12:42:28
It won't matter to people who have decided to vote for McCain or who hate Obama, because they are "guilty" of selective listening. They pay attention to the things that smear their perceived political opponents, and ignore damning statements from their own candidate.

Everyone does this, to one extent or another. It might be human nature: we trust those with whom we think we agree, and discount those with whom we disagree, even when presented with video evidence to the contrary.

The Disintegration of John McCain

'A truly principled person (and a candidate who had momentum in 1999) would have stood up to that crap publicly. Instead, McSame cut a deal. Bush and his people told him to "be a good boy and wait eight years. wait your turn, and we'll help you".'

I don't quite agree, even though I dislike McCain and despise Bush. Political parties routinely do this to members of their party. They even slapped-down Reagan, when he tried to jump-over the next "annointed" candidate of that party, and Ronnie had to "wait his turn." And look what happened to Bob Dole: he was nominated, even though he was a *terrible* candidate, comparable to McCain.

Ignore The Failed Former Oilman In Front of the White House

Why anyone would described Bush as an "oilman," former or otherwise, is unclear to me.

Did his oil company drill any non-dry holes? No.
Was his oil company profitable? No.

If *failing* at something is sufficient to describe one, either themselves or someone else, as a fomer-such-and-such, than *all* of our resumes would be bulked-up by this kind of folderol.

I took a course in a particular foreign language for one week, before I dropped it. Shall I describe myself as a former-student of that language?

I took a course in Physical Chemistry, before I realized that I was over-my-head and dropped it. Shall I describe myself as a former P. Chem. student?

Mr. Bush can be accurately described as a former Texas Governor and former Air National Guard pilot. That's it. No one denies those things.

But "former oilman?" Please.... Since when does experiencing professional failure confer upon that person the "qualification" of being a former-anything? posted 06/18/2008 at 15:50:12

Texas GOP Pin Asks: "If Obama Is President, Will We Still Call It The White House?"

I don't suppose that it occurs to you that those alleged HRC supporters either were really Republicans-in-sheeps-clothing spewing disinformation, or that they did not appreciate the venom with which Obama's supporters attacked her candidacy, or that Obama's claimed *they themselves* are the only True Inheritors of Progressive Democracy, or...

I voted for HRC in the primary. I will GLADLY vote for Obama in the general election. I *was* disappointed in the tone and direction her campaign took. But I'll bet that even *that* is not good enough for you. Right?

If you want to be holier-than-thou, join the GOP. Or shut-up. Obama is the Democratic nominee. That is fine with me. posted 06/18/2008 at 16:10:48

AFSCME, MoveOn Ad Targets McCain On Iraq War

Considering that he ranked near the bottom of his graduating class at Annapolis, it is a reasonable question to ask if McCain was not extended inappropriately favorable admission's consideration based on his father and grandfather being admirals. McCain attributes this in part to the demerits he received for (I'm paraphrasing his remarks), "having less concern with (irrelevant-to him) concern with (irrelevant-to him) Naval Academy traditions and regulations." As if his academic performance had nothing to do with his low class ranking, which is a patently dishonest thing to say.

McCain now also tells us that he was going to be offered the rank of Admiral, but chose instead to run for Congress. But McCain made no great contribution to the Navy during his service. Being willing to fly over enemy territory does not in itself make one a hero; it is part of the job. Getting shot down is not a qualification. Enduring prison is not a qualification. Almost sinking the carrier because a rocket on his plane accidently fired and started a huge blaze is not a qualification. He didn't deserve flag rank, and it is right that he did not receive it.

McCain, like Bush, seems to brook no disagreement with himself; this is exactly what the U.S. *doesn't* need in a President (or candidate). And McCain has a notoriously quick temper. Is he going to staff his cabinet with people who are willing to disagree, or with "Yes Men?" posted 06/17/2008 at 20:06:48
Furthermore, if you have a logical case for why we should-or shouldn't-remain in Iraq, please state it.

Categorizing those who oppose your position in non-human terms ("monkeys") is eerily similar to phrases used by people who opposed extending civil rights to Blacks.

If you insist on speaking of those who disagree with you as nonhuman, you not only invalidate your own (non-)argument, but also make "the rest of us" question *your* humanity.

"My parents didn't have any say in my decision to volunteer in 1966 as I was 18 years old. They supported me , of course, because I was their son. "

So "(your) parents didn't have any say," but they were good enough to support your decision, "of course, because (you are) their son."

Sounds like your parents are better people than *you* are. They didn't owe you any support, because, after all, you were a grown man....at all of 18 years. (Laughs) We know how worldly and experienced 18 year olds are; they don't even have the "right" to buy alcohol anymore. For good reason: their judgement is poor. posted 06/17/2008 at 17:12:16

Carville Floats Gore As A VP Pick

I like Al Gore. I respect Al Gore.

But I hope Obama doesn't pick him as VP running-mate, because a) he's got "baggage," and b) his speaking style induces sleep.

Stealth Bomber Crash Caught On Tape (VIDEO)

"Obviously," the speed reached insufficient speed to take-off (for reasons unknown), and the pilot tried to compensate by pitching-up too much, which caused the plane to begin to stall. He then tried to recover by lowering the nose, but by then, it was too late.

The take-off should have been discontinued, when the pilot noticed that the plane had insufficient speed.

Oh, well...a billion here, and a billion there.

Anyone who has ever flown a flight simulator, even on a desktop computer, "knows" that you can't climb at more than 8-15 degrees during take-off, unless the plane has a much greater thrust to weight ratio, which bombers do not have.

Crash due to pilot error, possibly aggravated by an engine or other malfunction. posted 06/08/2008 at 16:26:26

I can't speak for others, but I would gladly contribute $10 to NASA if they sent *him* on a one-way mission. I suspect I'm not the only person who thinks this would not only be a good idea, but an investment in america's future, namely, getting rid of him ASAP.

This is speculative, but since I have 25 years of software dev experience, I think it goes something like this:

HuffPo's computer looks for offensive words in a pending post. If it doesn't see any, that post is made public immediately. If it does, the pending post is put on a list of posts for a human reviewer to read. If it is not offensive, they let it through. If it is offensive, they delete it or edit it.

HuffPo's editing is inconsistent, but since it is their site, they are free to decide what they will post and what they will not. That is their privilege. If you don't like it, you are free to create your own site. I accept that, whether I like it or not. posted 06/06/2008 at 18:13:17

Clint Eastwood: Spike Lee Should "Shut His Face", Lee Responds, "We're Not On A Plantation"

It doesn't matter who Spike's movies influence. Neither Cornel West nor anyone else is the ultimate arbiter of taste or significance. posted 06/08/2008 at 13:30:43
I agree.

To contrast, every character in Spike's "Do The Right Thing" (except his own, "Mookie,") was a racial stereotype. Apparently, it's OK when Spike makes racial stereotypes...

I heard Spike speak on a conference on creativity. He's very impressed...with himself...

To contrast, Brian Eno, who also spoke, was completely charming, witty, and erudite. He didn't have to *try* to impress anyone, and he didn't have to make self-aggrandizing remarks about how great he is.

Regarding Eastwood, the Dirty Harry movies were crap, but he redeemed himself by making better movies later.

And that is my humble opinion. posted 06/08/2008 at 13:00:35

Obama In Heated Conversation With Lieberman

I think you give too much credit, and attribute more power, to Lieberman than he really has.

He's just 1 of 100 Senators, and Dick Cheney casts the deciding vote if there is a tie.

If we *must* converse in terms of sports analogies (yuck), there is a difference between leading a cheering section, and being the Coach (Bush). The Coach controls the plays, not the cheering section.
