First of all, I totally feel for you. Your father was probably much like my mother. But I've been following Liz's site for awhile and she NEVER advocates avoiding treatment and I'm sure none of those linked groups would either.
I think what Ms. Spikol and PITHYMAXIM are talking about help nurturing the diagnosed. Seeing the illness as a "gift" may be a stretch for the cynics ("guilty" your honor). But doing so would make it easier to help them separate themselves from the illness and gain the resolve and confidence to conquer its obstacles. I think that's what "pride" really means here.
