I think that Chris Matthews is basically a very, very intelligent and decent person. I have heard him make some of the most enlightened statements ever and he does tend to blurt out some of the best one-liners. However, he has so ticked me off at times that I have boycotted him days at a time. He is reminds of a crazy, wacky, always half drunk uncle. Tonight he was absolutely brilliant! I think that the GOP ought to continue doing exactly what they are doing. Employ the politics of personal destruction. We are all "flawed" or as the bible teaches we are all imperfect human beings. And Obama has certainly never claimed to be perfect. No supporter of Obama should think of him as being a perfect person but he is certainly the best politician we have seen in a long time. And I do not mean politician in what has now become the traditional sense which means they get a chance to lord it over others and to be served and have the biggest and best of what this life has to offer. I mean a politician as one who enters politics to serve, organize, inspire and motivate people so as to effect real change for a people, a community, a country or the world. Are we enablers? Are we active participants in the destruction and dumbing down of our society? I think so. I use the ridiculous Flava Flav (who rivals Carville on the ugliness scale) as an example: For the first season if I am surfing and come up on it, I would watch until my ADD kicks in. I was shocked to learn that this bit of nonsensical train wreck was one of the highest rated shows ever. So now we have this ugly, wizened shell of man on for 3 seasons now because people watched that crap. I have been congratulating myself that I am able to turn off Fox quite easily and when I do watch, I tell myself that it is good to know what the enemy is thinking. During the Rev Wright manufactured controversy, Chris Matthews boasted that is increased ratings is a sign that people wanted the media to discuss that issue. Of course that wasn't true but that argument underlines why we have Beck and Dobbs and Hannity and Buchannan and all the hate-peddlers. People listen them which means an increase in ratings which means an increase in revenue and that is ultimately what the game is all about. It is like slavery wasn't just about people thinking Africans were inferior but it was primarily about the economics. Right-wing pundits peddling hate is good for business. This country is something else. The incestuous relationships play out in the media everyday where the super-rich and successful have a new pet project, a new book, a new clothing line or whatever and they immediately get access to every program on TV. ABC has a NEWS SPECIAL (can you believe that) to promote Barbara's book,. She was on Oprah, she is everywhere. The rich get richer, the successful gets even more successful. Oprah's show is just one huge promoting venue for the rich and famous with a few feel good, do good programs thrown in and even then it is almost always to showcase the actions of some "celebrity" and how good they are recognizing the plight of the less fortunate. The reason we saw (or in my case - glimpsed) Tom Cruise, was to promote his new project - 25 (or however many) years in show business.
