The US Military's Shameless Propaganda Over Guantanamo's 9/11 Trials

I think you are missing the point.

Ordinarily if a defendent doesn't wan't to participate in a trial the trial still goes on. People are even tried in absentia. The problem here is one of appearance. These ARE show trials...the government just doesn't want them to LOOK like show trials.

This is not a matter of law but of propaganda. The government is trying to send a message of fairness and justice while the whole world knows that every aspect of Guantanamo is a fraud used to circumvent any reasonable interpretation of law.

It is like going to the circus when the animals refuse to perform.

How much fun is that? posted 04/21/2008 at 11:48:45

Judge Decides Guantanamo Prisoner's Health Problems Are His Own Fault

In 21st century America how do you distinguish between satire and reality...

when a President can simply define people as 'having no rights'

when fighting back against an invading force makes you 'guilty'

when definitions of words like 'toruture' are redefined because their actual definitions are inconvenient

when we crusade around the world as supposed champions of 'freedom and democracy' all the while providing dictators with money and weapons with which they keep their people in subjugation

when the poor, suffering, oppressed people of the world are our enemies while corrupt regimes that do our bidding are our friends

when we are killing ourselves with the diseases of greed and gluttony (diabetes, heart disease and obesity) while the majority of the rest of the world lives on less than two dollars a day

when the difference between supposed moral and immoral people is whether or not they support 'giving' rights to people whose only crime is having the audacity to fight back against generations of persecution and injustice

when the world is awash in evil and our biggest concern is the price of oil????

How about when 'God's chosen people' end up in hell...

Is that ironic enough for you? posted 04/18/2008 at 15:17:18

What's wrong with you people? This man has been labeled as an unlawful combatant which means he has NO rights. I have no idea why he even has an attorney or how he got any kind of hearing.

In the war on terror it is necessary to preemptively invade countries and then bomb and kill or incarcerate and torture the people. How do you do this efficiently if people have rights?

You do believe in the war on terror don't you? posted 04/18/2008 at 13:07:55

Smart Advice for the HuffPost Investor: The Smart Way to Maximize Your Investments

Dan,

It seems to me that you are not so much 'rearranging the deck chairs on the Titianic' as you are advising people on the most comfortable chair from which to witness the destruction.

Vanguard apparently represents the best in deck chair cushions but I expect you will get wet none the less.

We Can't Afford This War Anymore

Hey Bonddad,

There is a simple solution...the government should sell stock in this war.

The startup costs have gotten too high and we need to take this baby public!

It would be interesting to see how many of the true believers think this is a good investment. The rich and powerful don't want to send their sons and daughters to fight for Iraqi oil and American hegemony but maybe they will invest some capital.

I mean they fell for the sub prime mortgage scheme they might just be greedy (and stupid) enough to throw some money into this sinkhole.

As for American 'ethics and morals'...don't make me laugh this early in the morning. I almost coughed up my bagel! posted 04/12/2008 at 11:15:38

Smart Advice for the HuffPost Investor: Why Do Investors Search So Hard For The Holy Grail of Investing?

"The time horizon increases to as much as twelve years for investors whose portfolios consist primarily of stocks."

If history holds true this is very good advice. How many people actually understand and follow it though? A funny thing happens when most people try to make plans 12 years into the future...life intervenes! Like the old saying says 'life is what happens while you're busy making other plans'.

Also, your advice is based on past history and implies that nothing of significance has changed in the economy.

The problem is that significant and pernicious change has taken place. We are facing unprecedented debt, energy costs, a housing glut and a current account deficit with no end in sight...all inside our shiny, new 'service economy'!

Please explain to me how we are suppose to maintain the illusion of prosperity while we continue to sink further and further into debt.

Or better still, how do we get out of debt while we continue to need to import energy and manufactured goods when all we seem to have to offer in return is war and fiat currency.

Hey Dan, the silence is deafening. posted 04/09/2008 at 13:50:39

Historian Sean Wilentz And The Latest Nutty Scenario From Clinton Supporters

I agree with your premise that the process is undemocratic but the Clintons are certainly not going to help fix it. They are a substantial reason why it is as corrupt as it is!

In case you hadn't noticed there is no longer any meaningful difference between the Republican and Democratic parties. They both have devolved to represent slightly different versions of corporatism. For the voter it really comes down to whose lies you like better.

Bill Clinton has even been quoted as saying something to the effect that truth has no value in politics...it is all about perception. His administration elevated polling and focus groups to a new art form and became known for his amoral philosophy of 'triangulation'.

I am not an Obama supporter except to the extent that it would be fun to observe how all the flag-waving racists deal with having a black President for four years. But hey, I have a perverse sense of humor. posted 04/08/2008 at 11:34:42

An Iraqi Translator Gets Prosecuted While Blackwater Gets Another Year in Iraq

Until people find a way to understand and accept that the entire 'war on terror' is morally bankrupt nothing will make sense.

You can acknowledge the indisciminate torture, bombing and killing by the CIA and U.S. military around the world (not only today but for decades) but somehow you still insist on maintaining the aura of American justice and goodness.

I guess like everything else in today's upside down world we need a new definition for the word 'goodness'. posted 04/07/2008 at 17:24:49

Hillary Clinton Tax Returns: See Full Details

When the Clintons left the Whitehouse they couldn't even afford the down payment on their 4 million dollar house and now they are multi-millionaires based on their brilliant writing and elocution abilities???

Come on people...how dumb would we have to be to believe this?

I mean I could understand how Hillary could make $100,000 with no money down in 'cattle futures' but now I'm starting to get suspicious!

People no longer even blink at corruption they just want to get 'theirs'!

What a country. posted 04/05/2008 at 12:51:15

Smart Advice for the HuffPost Investor: Investment Pornography -- Are You A Victim?

Dan,

Perhaps you don't dispense pornography but you do show more than a little leg.

You state: "I can understand the quest for more money, but at what risk?"

I couldn't have said it better. EVEN index funds have risk and when the Fed starts engaging in actions not seen since the Great Depression that risk is not only increased but increased substantially.

Those people still advocating that the markets and capitalism are infallible 'in the long run' are in extreme denial. Experts, such as yourself, are only right until you aren't and that day may be approaching must faster than you are even willing to consider.

The stock market offers no guarantees...even in index funds. To advise people otherwise is to mislead them. The risk/reward ratio is always there and in times such as this the risk side of the equation is greater than at any other time in the history of capitalism.

For those who think we will have, at most, a brief recession and that the demise of Bear Stearns signified the bottom I ask a simple question...

When has there ever been just one cockroach?

We may be on the verge of exposing the entire nest. posted 04/03/2008 at 16:51:44

A Misunderstanding on Iraq

I understand the philsophy that says we need to be practical and choose the lessor of evils but somehow I can't get past the luxury that allows those living in the clouds to be practical while those suffering and dying in the xenite mines...well, maybe not so much.

We can obtain universal health care, improved education and a great economy but what does it matter if we don't end the war.

Katrina, what does it profit a man if he should gain the whole world but lose his own soul?

Jeremy Scahill is a great journalist and is absolutely right on the War on Iraq. His only fault is that he won't condemn the entire 'war on terror'. Still we need many more people like him and Cindy Sheehan and far less of the deal makers. posted 03/26/2008 at 18:29:06

Smart Advice for the HuffPost Investor: Everything You Wanted To Know About Investing and Had The Courage to Ask!

"I understand that some readers believe we are headed towards financial Armageddon."

"I write this column for "responsible investors": Hard working Americans saving for retirement or for their children's education."

Why are you unwilling to acknowledge the massive debt level of individuals, corporations and the government of this country? Why haven't the unprecedented actions of the Fed caused you any alarm? If Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, Citi Group and even JP Morgan and Bank of American end up being bailed out by the Fed or even nationalized will that alter your advice? How about if the Federal Government ends up buying a couple trillion dollars in bad mortgages with even more fiat currency? How about if unemployment rises to 25-30 percent or higher?

I'm trying to ask if even you, at some point, will have to pull the blinders off and, if only for the sake of 'Hard working Americans saving for retirement', acknowledge no system is infallible...even index funds!

Someone once said that the Constitution isn't a suicide pact. I submit that capitalism shouldn't be either. posted 03/26/2008 at 18:57:33
