Before Bush was elected, I was making $140,000 a year & had a lot of benefits. Today, working two part time jobs (with no bennies to speak of) I work much harder. If I'm lucky, I clear $35K/year. Much of this is going to pay off debt I accumulated when that seemed like the thing to do.

I've worked for big companies, small companies, owned my own & worked for the state. I've fired a gun, and I've enjoyed it--which isn't the same as thinking guns are great. I've travelled through much of Europe, Africa & North America & as far away as Singapore.

Oh yeah, I'm not here to argue, I say what I think & then I leave. Want an argument? Go find somebody else. I have opinions, not rigid standards that I must force everyone else to meet or I will not be able to relax.

& yes, that is a mote in my eye, thank you for noticing.

Truth Alert: McCain's Freudian Slip is Showing (and Very Telling)

I'm not sure what is more sad, that you (I suspect) are surrounded by people who would be swayed by this argument, or that you, yourself, consider that it holds any water. Many of the founding fathers had less connection (in the sense that you use it) to the United States than does Obama.

Spare Me Your Exits Polls

I suspect that the people you're talking about know why they vote the way they vote...why can't you figure it out (yes, I know your questions are rhetorical)?

African Americans vote heavily democratic since the republican party decided specifically, and as a matter of public record, to support 'the southern strategy.' I'm sure you just failed to notice that for the last forty years or so.

As for American Jews--perhaps they value social justice, and what's good for America more than fueling some of Israel's less helpful policies? But again, acknowledging that would compromise your worldview pretty badly wouldn't it? posted 05/10/2008 at 11:27:50

Will Obama Win Enough White Votes to Beat McCain?

"The states where he won the primaries are mostly states that invariably end up in the GOP column in general elections."

Which means, of course, we have a chance of winning them, which would be nice.

Is he gonna lose california or new york or any other strong blue state--no. Or we can pick someone who can only win blue states. What stategy got the democrats gains in the last election--working all fifty states, and winning some we weren't sure we had a lock on--it'll work again, trust me.

The $3 Trillion Shopping Spree

Another conversation I don't want to get dragged into, but...

Put simply, and using the terms loosely, every other 'western democracy' provides more of a social safety net than we do, most provide some kind of universal health care, though rarely does this mean 1) that it's free, or 2) that it's government run (as opposed to government paid for). Now, these twenty odd countries are able to do this, and they are able to gain benefits because of prevention and economies of scale (and yes, some people may even be harmed by this 'one size fits all' health care), and they are able to do all of this without bankrupting themselves, or devaluing their currency to the point of madness.

Why can they accomplish this while we cannot?

Is it, perhaps, that there are entrenched interests in our country, with powerful friends, who would feel threatened by such a system? Is it that the obscene profits of big pharma might be endangered if the government was actively working to provide decent health care for all--rather than insane profits for a few?

Are you, are we, ultimately, Americans, or American'ts? posted 05/11/2008 at 15:50:16

Defining Obama

Several (brief) points:

1. As a godless liberal, I pretty much care who god damns as much as I care who the easter bunny has issues with.

2. America has 1) committed deliberate genocide against the native americans--reducing their population by more than 95% & stealing their land, 2) enslaved millions of others, and then treated them like dirt when they were freed, 3) is doing immense damage to the planet (I know you disagree, please feel free to let me know what Ben Stein thinks about the whole thing), 4) is hurting it's own people & millions throughout the world with our military & industrial policies...but hell, at least for the top 3% of America--things are GREAT. Why do I say all this--Jesus would tell you this behavior was unacceptable, he might even tell you that people who supported it (or brushed it under the rug) would go to hell--so the Rev is right on.

3. EIther you're not paying attention, or you're choosing to be obtuse--if you've watched even a couple minutes either before or after that clip you know that it's been taken deliberately & rediculously out of context.

Bye bye. posted 04/25/2008 at 17:43:22
