David Remnick On That New Yorker Cover: It's Satire, Meant To Target "Distortions And Misconceptions And Prejudices" About Obama

I am more than disappointed in the lack of judgment shown by The New Yorker. IF we are to believe that what they "meant" was satire, then the very best I can think of to say is that it's the Emperor's New Clothes. It's a bunch of people sitting around telling themsleves how smart they are without a thought about how most people will interpret their cover. Most people will only see what they want to see - an affirmation of all they feared about Obama. If he loses this important election, I will personally hold The New Yorker responsible. posted 07/14/2008 at 12:15:41

I Now Pronounce You A and B

Yes, it's about time! I think hospital situations can be tricky - for the married, unmarried, for children, for parents, for everyone. A word to the wise. Find out exactly what your state says (and means) regarding health proxies, Powers of Attorney, DNR requests, etc. Whether married or single, straight or gay, KNOW your rights and your assigned caretaker's rights. It's more complicated than any of the other legal issues. But enough about serious stuff! I am enjoying friends in New York, spurred on by the California ruling, who are planning weddings in Massachusetts this summer. They are happier than I've ever seen them, and yes, they KNOW it's a responsibility, but they have been living together long enough to have accepted the responsibility without any of the benefits! posted 06/28/2008 at 22:44:27

Missing My Husband on Father's Day

Thank you for the honesty. Father's Day (and Mother's Day) are so happy for some of us and so sad for those of us who have lost parents and spouses. I was also 'challenged' with getting unique gifts. It was an adventure, and I wish I could take it again. posted 06/16/2008 at 13:57:17

What's in a Number?

I'm going to drive my RV over to my daughter and son-in-law and read to them. Great fun, but disheartening. Maybe I'll buy a wig and join a dating service, too, just to be a contrariarn. posted 03/30/2008 at 17:47:44
