Scared White

Let's face the FACT that NO state has a majority of voters that are black. That does NOT negate the fact that 'national' polls showed Hillary leading in ALL states among black voters until a number primaries or caucuses had passed. It seems more of 'the Clinton's' supporters are actually 'bitter' about the fact they've only won some demographics of the white voters, and a noticable percentage of those have openly said it's because of skin color. Although nowhere do 'I' claim a race card was played, it WAS Hillary that used the 'hard working white people' reference in WV more than once, before and after, which MANY pundits and black voters took to be demeaning by implication.

The fact that no such instance has yet been directly attributed to 'Barack' in ANY campaigning IS very telling where guilt, if it exists, originates.

You work very hard at your rationalizations that supporters of Senator Obama are somehow dishonest enemies of their party, yet provide no substantiation of such conclusions. posted 05/17/2008 at 12:09:52
Racism IS bigotry, prejudice against racism is NOT.

Thank you for reiterating my point by failing that understanding. posted 05/17/2008 at 09:51:00
If you want to talk about, "...arguments fly in the face of equality and post racial society", let's start with the idea that black voters 'hate' white people because 90+ percent now support Obama, when it's a FACT that until 'after' the first several primaries and caucuses, a majority of black voters instead supported 'the Clintons'. You seemingly also ignore it was white voters that provided Obama with his early victories, or bother to mention that it was black voters provided Bill Clinton with two terms in the Oval Office.

More than half your comment puts YOUR words into Steven's blog, and provides a circular argument that; while you acknowledge the existence of 'two Americas', factually proven by poverty percentages, arrest records and prison populations by the way, the ONLY possible REAL reason for black Americans now having a unified vote, and the 'hate' YOU attribute to them, is how their "...ancestors were treated".

While it's TRUE some hatred likely exists in both races of people, it's ALSO TRUE that examples of saying that 'hard working people' of 'a particular race' would NOT vote for the other candidate - has come from, and thus been used by, 'one' of the campaigns ONLY. posted 05/17/2008 at 09:19:33
Great point, Diana, we see neoCONS like the preznutz, his veepy dick, LIEberman, and even McSame all saying it's preferable to threaten and even BOMB Iran, rather than trying to talk to them, AGAINST the current (this week) advise of their Secretary of Defense.

Yet by the very definition of 'appeasement', we also see the indirect, back-door, bribery offers to the regimes of North Korea and even Iran itself, though labeled a states sponsoring terrorism, to give up WMD programs.

It's a blatant rovian 180-spin tactic that 'suggested diplomacy' is redefined as 'appeasement', while the accepted definition of 'appeasement', "To pacify or attempt to pacify (an enemy) by granting concessions", is ALREADY blatantly being employed by the current administration.

Voters must wake up that pro-corporate neoCONS and neoliberals LIE because they DON'T want terrorism to ever end, they NEED perpetual war for those 'profit margin$'. posted 05/17/2008 at 07:18:00
I'm with you completely, Steven, as I frequently attack ANY bigotry head-on.
I got scrubbed from a hyper thread yesterday for explaining this critical difference to another commenter. I said:

"If you didn't see it, one of the WV ladies interviewed on the tape used last night on The Daily Show, said she could NEVER vote for someone of 'that' race.
If someone can't figure out that being prejudiced against BIGOTRY is a lot different than being prejudiced against race, religion or sexual orientation ...guess what, THEY'RE a BIGOT."

Those saying you go overboard or look down on others by fighting or ridiculing racism and bigotry, at EVERY opportunity, are WRONG.

While I never demean the beliefs of those that follow the 'red-letter' words of Jesus, I have zero regrets telling 'old testament biblicans' that discrimination against EQUAL civil rights for same sex couples is displaying blatant religious 'bigotries' from faith in a fairy tale. While I understand fearing fundamentalist extremists of ANY religion that preach harming unbelievers, it's NEVER acceptable or honest to believe one can know the integrity or humanity of another by the color of their skin, or the origins of their ancestors.

ALL you say about knee-jerk reactions is perfectly on target, as is your conclusion that hypocritical politicians WILL USE bigotry if they think it will help them win.

When I see a gauntlet of TRUTH thrown concerning any 'bigotry', sir, my reaction is ALWAYS ...wa and may I say hoo. posted 05/16/2008 at 21:43:22

Florida, Michigan cannot save Clinton

It seems VERY unlikely that the rules committee will seat either delegation 'as is', but will more likely now make each a state of 'half-vote' delegates as are the U.S. voting territories. Because the 'as is' seating will no longer really help Hillary anyway, giving these states a free-pass with no penalty could cause half of ALL 2012 primaries and caucuses to be scheduled before January 1, in 2011, as each state tries grabbing for a bit more relevancy. THAT would be asking for serious trouble. posted 05/17/2008 at 10:55:17

As a veteran and person that loves the Constitutional foundation of OUR country, I will ALWAYS believe in the oath I took to that Constitution. I understand Mr. Olbermann's condemnation was NOT directed, in ANY general way, at OUR military or the men and women that serve with the entire honor and distinction they are allowed.

It is obvious, to even the most casual listener or reader, that Keith's condemnation was reserved SPECIFICALLY for those elected civilian leaders and sycophant military rank climbers that NEVER believed in their oath to OUR country and Constitution. It WAS directed instead at those that SOLD OUT their honor to career expediency, LIED when they took their oath, and accept the neoCON proposition that the manifest destiny of OUR nation is about profits for defense corporations and energy consortiums, that openly BRIBE elected leaders, rather than OUR Constitution or the RIGHTS of 'We the People'.

Impuners and detractors of his message, trying to ease their conscience by putting different words and meaning in his mouth or Comment, are unfortunately ONLY further condemning themselves as the exact type of individual that places their politics, wealth and self-righteousness over anything as mundane as an oath to OUR country and OUR Constitution. These definition spinners of HONOR and TRUTH eat their heart out for continued relevancy in their dwindling universe of neoCON obsoleteness. posted 05/15/2008 at 10:58:21
Since his first Special Comment back in 2006, when I was at that time just an occasional watcher, I've been a huge fan of Mr. Olbermann's. Without as much satire, he's Stephen Colbert at the White House Correspondents Dinner - on the evening news. His Special Comments and nightly honesty have brought some of the ONLY integrity to main stream media that exists.

Likely he fears to be seen as Howard Beale from the movie 'Network', and so reserves his almost rare Special Comments until his ire has boiled over into something he can no longer contain within himself, and then OUR country benefits from his impeccable 'truth to power'. There will never be ANY accuracy in the inevitable comparison by those trying to dismiss him, to the bi-polar Howard Beale, other than his giving 'some' bit of voice to the citizens of OUR country that ache to tell OUR elected leaders, "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore!"

Thank you, Keith Olbermann, you're a mighty voice of 'integrity and reason' in a pseudo free press that largely chooses spin over TRUTH. posted 05/15/2008 at 08:57:42

I was not discussing any candidates, but instead addressing the topic Arianna did, the truthfulness of pseudo journalists spinning the last 7 years in an effort to preemptively define progress for the next Presidency. Framing anything in my comment as part of the "...cacophony of arguments" between the Democratic candidates is quite a reach, and has little to do with MSM spinning 'bipartisanship' success as occurring ONLY when liberal positions are eliminated in favor of conservative ones.

If your concern for my understanding of TRUTH is limited to my view Senator Obama, it takes all of 10 seconds in my 'profile' to determine where this defense minded Independent stands and who I support for the Presidency. I have no patience and a great deal of contempt for bloggers, such as you mention, that think they contribute to ANY dialogue of 'issues' by throwing around BIGOTED labels like misogynist likely hiding their own misandry, ignoring the stated 'issues' of ALL others and stereotyping thoughtfulness instead as something small and mean as THEIR universe instead appears.

The 'TRUTH' referenced in my comment was the MSM's continued dishonest view that occupation of Iraq was EVER about WMDs, instead of oil reserves, creating perpetual enemies, perpetual war and trillions in 'no bid / no perform' corporate hand-outs at taxpayer expense. posted 05/12/2008 at 20:26:40
I'm not so sure these main stream media 'hacks' are totally delusional and require rehab, Arianna, so much as I believe most KNOW who owns their outlets, and are given completely to producing the correct spin that preserves their jobs. Without that fabricated spin, they find themselves on the edge of an abyss, where addressing the public with YOUR type TRUTH is NOT what their owners and masters find 'acceptable' and continued employment outweighs ALL conscience.

Too few adequate salaries are available to those that would wear the kind of integrity on their sleeve as do Arianna Huffington and Keith Olbermann. Far more opportunities exist for the Harwoods and Seibs, the Russerts and Gibsons, and the ins-Hannity's and O'LIEerlys. Were the numbers of positions providing TRUTH to power and public more balanced and acceptably available - this particular person and his modest way with words might also try selling some conscience and integrity to my fellow human beings.

You have to admit, Arianna, in THIS economy destroyed by criminal war and occupation, real opportunities are hard enough to come by that few of us can just say, "I don't need my job that much". Protecting one's self and family involves conscience also, perhaps just not quite as much as protecting OUR country, OUR Constitution and OUR planet for OUR grandchildren does.

All that aside, you're right on target that TRUTH keeps getting dragged to the right and bipartisanship for many years has been the 'obliteration' of ANYTHING liberal or compassionate. posted 05/12/2008 at 17:47:48

New Group With Clinton Ties Pushes A 'Dream Ticket'

Possibly, but I'm a white man in my 50s that grew up in the Ozarks and I would love such a ticket. However, the voting block that kept Hillary in this race is not the 'white' working poor, so much as it's been women that too often stay home in national elections. Uniting those women with the traditionally strong Democratic voting block of 'black America', that twice helped to elect Bill would likely bury the republicants, and possibly overcome much of the racism AND sexism in OUR country forever. I've serious concern the older and single women that traditionally stay home on election day might do so again.

I will vote for Senator Obama regardless of his VP choice though, McBushyCain is just more of the same BAD leadership destroying OUR country. posted 05/11/2008 at 20:30:33
Frankly, it would be FAR more productive for Senator Obama to choose another women as running mate, like Governor Napolitano of Arizona, than it would to provide republicants with the same old ammunition of divisive issues that CAUSED the grid-lock in OUR country since the 'contract ON America' in 1994. This could provide a path to healing any rift created by the two campaigns, keeping women for Hillary interested enough to still help a liberal President prevent the Supreme Court being completely lost to conservative choices. Any voters NOT willing to get behind such a choice were likely behind 'the Clintons' for their centrist DLC positions that were more republicant than Democrat anyway, and their actual choice in a voting booth would never have been a forgone conclusion.

I just cannot see Senator Obama EVER wanting to deal with the inevitable 'second guessing' in the press, or the continuous cheney-type 'back seat driving' that would occur. Remember the veep will be the tie-breaking vote in the Senate, should one be needed. Because of that, President Obama would not want a republicant, no matter how anti-war they might be. I'd suggest choices like Gov. Janet Napolitano as veep, Sen. Joe Biden as Secretary of Defense, Gov. Bill Richardson as Secretary of State, Wesley Clark as head of Homeland or National Security Advisor, John Edwards as Health and Human Services, Tom Daschle as Energy Secretary, Bloomberg if he'd take Commerce or Treasury, Jim Webb for head of Veterans Affairs, perhaps Schwietzer as Interior, and -just a thought, how about Professor Jonathan Turley as the new Attorney General.

Choosing Senators for the cabinet could create real problems finding good replacements. But Edwards, Daschle, Clark and the Governors would cause less problems. Quality replacements for Biden and Webb could be tough though.

Many of these might not desire a cabinet post, but Bill Richardson would be far more valuable as Secretary of State thereby allowing Senator Obama to pick a woman for veep like Governor Napolitano. posted 05/09/2008 at 22:58:06

Please, EVERYONE, go see "WAR, Inc." later this month to support John's message against 'privatization'. It's very important OUR country understands what neoCON-type republicants, as well as lobby-bought pro-corporate Democrats, are trying to do and the perils of placing government functions like the military, highways, prisons and disaster relief into the hands of big-business and industry. The current criminal administration's greatly increased this national malfeasance with their 'no-bid / no-oversight / no-perform' contracts granted to favored corporations and misusing MANY BILLIONS in taxpayer dollars.

Rather than investing in the infrastructure of OUR country, we ALREADY see 'private-owned' highways appear while public bridges collapse, 'private-owned' armies that WILL start wars for their profit margins and a 'private-owned' prison system that in-turn 'lobbies' OUR elected leaders for greater mandatory sentences just to increase their need for existence.

We MUST vote to protect OUR country, OUR children, and OUR grandchildren, and to prevent 'corporations WITHOUT conscience' from determining the dollar value of a human life.

It's been a while since I've read it, but I believe it was the prologue of 'Profiles In Courage' by JFK, he explained how by the time a politician is elected to a national office they've been forced to sacrifice any plans for change, their ideals and even the very principles that often inspired them to seek leadership in the first place, and all because of the many compromises required to generate enough funding and receive enough endorsements to provide them a path to success.

A difference could NOT be more clearly illustrated, whether EVER realized, than seeing for the first time in decades a public servant trying to change the status quo of LOBBY politics. THIS, if nothing else, should tell EVERY voter here's a candidate with enough principles remaining to attempt bringing citizens TRUTH, instead of the same old corporate smoke and mirrors.

A politics of scorched earth and the destruction of 'anything to win' creates apathy among voters, feelings that change is NOT possible, and result in the same path to corporate dominance that warps EVERY message 'allowed'.

Will the people choose a candidate that 'rejects' the LIES of giving corporations EVERY advantage, and the taxpayers only grief, the lies that are destroying OUR Constitution, OUR economy and OUR country, OR will people choose that 'devil they know'? posted 05/05/2008 at 09:43:24

Obama's Dilemma: To Debate Or Not Debate

I liked Air Ameica host Thom Hartmann's idea. He thinks if Senator Obama accepts Hilary's suggestion for Douglas / Lincoln style debates it should be ONLY in the EXACT FORMAT for those debates about 145 years ago. It lasted SIX HOURS with NO interruptions allowed, and NO questions - ONLY rebuttals. This format would GREATLY favor Obama's speaking style.

Otherwise - forget it, it was her idea, after all. posted 04/30/2008 at 08:37:14

Gas Tax Holiday Splits Clinton And Obama: Who's Right?

As 'policies' go, borrowing MORE money from OUR future because gas taxes already being collected from the people are 'temporarily postponed', rather than revoking the outrageous tax-breaks given the oil companies, sounds just exactly like the preznut'z , JohnnyMac's and the neocon's pro-corporate idiocy.

Setting a 'standard policy' to OBLITERATE, without trying OTHER measures first, an entire country of TENS of MILLIONS of PEOPLE because the 'leaders' of that country are looney enough to attack another country for wrong or 'fabricated' reasons IS INSANE. Think about the target that automatically paints on OUR country for the criminal invasion and occupation of Iraq. Michigan Democrats: Split Delegates 69-59

I said MONTHS ago to make BOTH states, Michigan AND Florida a 50/50 split, then at least the delegates get to go to the convention and have a good time with the rest of their party members. There is NO WAY either state should be ANY type king/queen maker after breaking party rules THEY WERE AWARE OF, as did Hillary when she failed to remove her name as the Party asked all candidates to do in Michigan. MANY Florida voters have, in fact, reported they stayed home instead of going to vote because they had been told ahead of time their votes would not count.

And, if 'Hillary I'm-ahead-in-popular-votes' wants to count Michigan and Florida votes in HER rationalized total, conservative estimates should be tabulated for ALL of the caucases where votes were not kept track of for either candidate, which would put Senator Obama up by a couple of MILLION, unless she doesn't REALLY want all the votes counted.

SHE is NOT the Democratic Party and does not get to set the rules. Too bad, so sad. posted 04/29/2008 at 19:05:09

More likely, if ANY non-republicants happened to be listening, they knew what to expect and got NO surprises, including the kind that would have been used against Senator Obama had he taken their bait.

The fact that Barack gave them NOTHING they could sink their teeth into just shows he understood this and will, at least for himself and what HE says, try to remove some racial bigotry from the election instead. Jeremiah Wright and Psalm 137

Yeah, you know, I just get a rash when ANYBODY that calls themselves 'Christ'ian starts throwing old testament at people to justify passing a judgement or rationalizing some bigotry.

When men claiming to be leaders of the faith and spirit of Jesus, especially the blatantly bigoted and 'white' pastors like Hagee for instance, clearly demonstrate they are 'biblicans' instead and the book they use to beat others with has a greater influence upon their spirituality than the being whose name adorns their religion itself, I just want to yell 'HYPOCRITE'.

They KNOW Jesus preached tolerance of others, that he helped the poor, sick, elderly and even those 'different' from HIM. Yet, rather than accepting their savior's 'red letter' message and using it to guide interaction with ALL others, to heal wounds and right wrongs, they choose to close the doors opened for them by HIS words and cherry-pick others from their 'book' to control, intimidate and harm fellow humans.

Such are the methods then also used by those picking a few words to pass judgement on Rev. Wright, summing poorly the measure of his life or what he may have given to others, to justify a long history of racist bigotry by political leaders that use ANY tool to keep their power. They are weak minds and seemingly ANYTHING ...but 'Christ'ian.

It's no surprise then that some of these ONLY have followers that are similar in nature. posted 04/28/2008 at 09:47:31

Howard Kurtz's Take on Self-Loathing Liberal Media: Naïve, Disingenuous, or Willfully Ignorant?

Some are fully able to benefit from logic, Arianna, some others are compromised by an absolutism that prevents the benefit logic might deliver them, and then there are those that CHOOSE to sell-out their fellow man, intentionally confusing them just to rob them of any possible enlightenment from logic. Whether the Kurtzes of the world actually FEAR for their jobs and the whip of their corporate masters, or worse, they have NO fear yet STILL knowingly steal the ability to reason from less gifted for their own personal gain$, the TRUTH is that 'defenders' of blatant deceivers and 180-spinners are in many ways more damaging to perceptive reality than anything the roves and kristols could ever accomplish on their own.

I think for many sincere but less thoughtful types being targeted, the roves and snow-jobs are far easier to recognize as TRUE liars and hypocrites, somewhat limiting their effectiveness as manipulators. The Kurtzes, on the other hand, provide those 'big-time liars' with cover, and just enough plausibility, to confuse non-critical thinkers and allow them an excuse to escape any internal conflict and instead manufacture some pseudo self-righteousness.

As efforts are made by you and others to enlighten readers to the TRUE nature of some beasts, plagues of MSM Kurtzes these days seem determined to damage 'logic' and even reality itself.

There's some serious soul searching here, sir A, and a great deal of careful consideration for consequences to longtime relationships, I'm sure. I commend your conclusions though, and say that I believe the candidate debate here for the last year was often mischaracterized as being misogyny motivated. Some prefer that explanation to recognition that REAL 'issues' of corporate, and special interest, compromise ...exist.

A few bloggers that I will leave nameless continually express a 'bitter' misandry and then proclaim ANY opposed as making gender THE issue.

I've witnessed and rejoiced, however, that many voters awaken to cause and effect, and demand 'change' that might yet save OUR country. Ending the occupation and saving lives, that are seemingly sacrificed just to drive 'energy' market prices, is the REAL issue and will save OUR economy in the process. Choosing to substitute gender, race, guns or religion as 'reason' to support a candidate does OUR country a great disservice with willful negligence.

I applaud your logic, your decision and your endorsement, sir, and made a similar plea to Pennsylvanians myself as one of the final comments on your previous blog posting.
