Tornado deaths underscore risks of taking shelter in cars

I work in Stuttgart, AR and am, in fact, posting from the local Hospital. The damage to this community is significant. The number of Tornadic and severe storms has been noticeably on the rise in recent years- especially during winter and spring. Maybe it's related to global warming, which is supposed to cause more unseasonable and severe swings in the weather.
The reports I have seen in the media are 300 homes damaged and/or destroyed and over 30 commercial properties. In a town of 10,000 that's a significant number. When the Governor called in National Guard troops they had to come from somewhere else as the local Guard in in- you guessed it- Iraq. posted 05/12/2008 at 04:00:20

Economic Suicide

Old Hippie Saying:
Live simply, so that others may simply live.

Old saying attributed to Benjamin Franklin:
We should all hang together or we will surely all hang separately.

2 related old sayings from the Bible:
What you sow, so will you reap.
If you sow the wind you will reap a whirlwind.

Old anonymous saying:
Insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results.

Is it a me society or a we society?
Will we stand together or will it be each person for themselves?
Will we learn from mistakes or profit from the knowledge gained the hard way?
Will we light a candle or curse the darkness?
Will we set aside our differences and concentrate on our common humanity and needs?

Let's not get caught rearranging deck chair on the Titanic.

Vista Struggling As Business Customers Snub It

LINUX is a train wreck unless you are talking commercially supported distros. Server-side, LINUX is going strong but is almost the exclusive home of the homebrew crowd on the desktop. I know some companies like GE are building Radiology workstations on LINUX, but that is to replace UNIX variants from SGI and Sun.

The best thing going today is Mac OS X with VM Ware Fusion running Windows if you really need it. Having tried it and Parallels, the VM product seems the better performer. You can have your cake and eat it too.

With Vista, Microsoft tried to re-invent the wheel while maintaining backward compatibility and ended up with little of what they promised just to kick it out to market. Never has a technology company spent so much money and time developing something that delivers so little of value to the end-user. XP Pro is the best version of Windows out in the wild. For those who are not tied by a Windows-only application, the Mac is many times better. posted 05/01/2008 at 03:55:22

Low-Cost Electric Cars On The Way

Ford owned this company and invested significant money and then dumped it a couple of years back.

Detroit stopped investing in electrics, hybrids and other technology during the late 1990's and early 2000's chasing huge, gas guzzling SUV's and are now caught (again) leaning the wrong way.

Katie Couric Likely To Leave CBS, Says Report; CBS Denies

Pssst...CBS, I've got a hint for you.
The CBS Evening News doesn't need new graphics or a new set or even new theme music.
What it needs are:
1- Real reporters who actually go out and cover real stories instead of being stenographers for Press Secretaries.
2- A real, credible journalist at the helm who actually has good news judgement.
3- A no infotainment zone. If I wanted to watch Entertainment Tonight I would switch channels.
4- Get rid of Couric. Maybe she can get her old desk assistant job at CNN. It would match her skill set perfectly. posted 04/10/2008 at 02:24:25

CBS Considering Outsourcing Some Newsgathering To CNN

CBS News as a real news operation died during the cutbacks of the 1980's and is nothing more than 2 or 3 real bureaus (New York, Washington, London) these days. In the heyday of Walter Cronkite CBS had real bureaus all over the world much as BBC does today. These days they do voiceovers from New York or London on canned video from other video services- not real reporting. In Washington they act as little more than stenographers for those in power.
It tells you all you need to know about priorities when CBS spends over a half billion a year in rights fees for the NCAA Basketball Tournament but constantly starves the News operation. As lame as CNN is, anything would probably be an improvement. posted 04/08/2008 at 03:52:36

I'm for Impeaching Dubya, Cheney and more than a few Federal Judges for what they have done to this country, dereliction of duty, ignoring the Constitution, committing more than a few felonies, lying to the Congress and the American people, appointing a President instead of following the law, failure to enforce US Law, misallocation of public funds, starting a war without a Declaration of War, violations of the Geneva Conventions (which is US Law by the Constitution), graft, theft of government property, fiduciary negligence, violation of our citizen's civil rights under the Bill of Rights and established Common Law, illegal imprisonment, etc.

Starbucks Refuses To Pay Baristas Court-Ordered Tips

Mr Schultz,
I have been a customer of Starbucks for a long time and have some advice for you:

Do right by your employees/associates. It's that simple.

Pay your supervisors a manager's wage and tell them to stay out of the tips.
Pay your regular employees like a place that charges $5 for a cup of coffee should be able to.

Failing this I will not be patronizing your establishments again and hope your chain implodes into a sea of debt and is but an asterisk in the history of business in these United States. posted 03/29/2008 at 00:56:09

Economics -- and Life -- In a Post-Fact World

Welcome to the world of disinformation- PsyOps on the general public- a.k.a. the unwashed and obviously uneducated and informed. You know, the guy living in a trailer working for a subsistence wage that thinks he is a Republican. Texas is full of them these days. Until they decide to pull their heads out of the sand little can be done.

Onward and upward...

There is a big difference between data and facts, anecdote and empirical truth, opinion and informed opinion. Most of the MSM abandoned dealing in real facts long ago, just as they have abandoned real reporting for gossip and horse-race politics.

Remember a book called Information Anxiety. Way back in the 1980's he author commented that we were drowning in data but had little useful information. That's exactly where we are. posted 03/24/2008 at 13:10:05

The Wheels Come Off -- Again

If the President is to be the President of ALL the people and our system is based upon respect for the rights of all, how can any 'faith-based' concept of ethics be of any significance? The rule of law, the rights outlined in our founding documents and common sense respect for the right of privacy trumps anyone's concept of some god-given moral code. posted 03/22/2008 at 12:18:00

Catholic-Bashing

The Catholic Church invites a lot of scorn because of it's past and current track record. In the past it punished pioneering thinkers and scientists; conducted the inquisition and authorized the Crusades; terrorized Christians in Europe that would not bend the knee to Rome; hid the Bible from common people by use of Latin, Illiteracy and law; organized and authorized the genocide and slavery of native peoples in the new world; sat by and did nothing during the Nazi atrocities & failed to speak out during the time of Jim Crow in the South and institutionalized racism in the North. It has, however, restructured it's finances and holdings in such a way so as to shield itself financially from liability for pedophile Priests. That's really ethical and moral- don't you think?

The Church of Rome lost all of it's credibility a long time ago and has no moral authority left. It has been on the wrong side more time than the Bush Administration for close to 2,000 years now. If you choose to trek to god-knows-where to see the Virgin in a Toasted Cheese sandwich-- fine. Just don't expect me to keep a straight face about it. posted 03/22/2008 at 12:29:48
