Does he really believe that there's something physically different in the brain of black people? It's an outrageous -- and completely unsupported -- thing to say. Saving the Woods is Class Prejudice

So then use a different argument. Saving open spaces, wooded or otherwise, is important for a lot of reasons. Let me ask you something: Is protecting property value really the primary reason you want to save the woods to begin with? I mean, really? It seems like you're reaching with that tactic.

My advice is to keep your argument grounded -- so to speak -- on the primary issues that ANY community, anywhere in the US, would use to argue for preserving open spaces. Property values, if it's even on the list at all, would certainly be at the bottom. posted 04/18/2008 at 08:43:39

Ben Stein: Front Man for Creationism's Manufactroversy

What's most laughable is his phrase "half-baked suppositions." What Stein can't grasp is that it doesn't matter who wrote "The Origin of Species." It could have been anyone -- the scientific community doesn't care, they're going to give the thesis the same scrutiny as anyone else's. When Stein takes on Darwin, he's really taking on all scientists of the last hundred-plus years.

Would Stein also say that the writings of Stephen J Gould and Carl Sagan were also "half-baked"? Because they concluded that Darwin's science was sound.

It's also interesting that Stein uses the words "torture" and "misery." Think of Galileo. Inquisition, anyone? posted 04/13/2008 at 11:22:24
Ben Stein is one of those people who, when speaking, comes off as an intellectual, and therefore intelligent and wise. But he's a doofus. A Nixon-loving, conservative, stuck-in-an-old-mentality fool.

Nothing in the ancient creation stories is supported by facts. And unless they ever are, there's no reason to give them credence.

I love (actually, hate) the way people who are not scientists have the gall to question things beyond their scope, that have been vetted by the scientific community. And here's the bottom line: Darwin's writings have been around for over a hundred years; during that time they have been scrutinized by scientists all over the world. Darwin has been vetted by scientists the world over, from all nationalities and beliefs, for a CENTURY -- probably more so than any scientist, including Einstein. Only someone willfully out of touch would have the balls to say, "I still disagree, simply because I don't feel comfortable with the findings." posted 04/11/2008 at 17:45:44

Staying Grounded

If I'm going, say, from Philly to Boston, it used to be a no-brainer that it would be quicker (and more convenient) to fly. Now, not necessarily. if I have to drive down to the airport, park my car, get the shuttle to the counter two hours prior to departure; then land in Boston, wait to deplane, wait for luggage, and get the rental car -- by that point it wouldn't be much sooner than just driving straight up from my house. (Especially the way flights are so often delayed.) Plus, no restrictions on how much luggage I can take (nor the chance of my luggage being lost). And I can be in my own space, my own music, my own food....

Flying is a last resort for me. posted 04/15/2008 at 10:16:12

The Most Popular Movies of All Time are Chick Flicks

I disagree. "Chick flick" is guy term that essentially means "a movie ONLY chicks would be drawn to." Typically, these are romantic comedies that are more about the romance than the comedy. The films cited above are hybrids. Titanic was an epic disaster flick fused with a romance story -- Poseidon Adventure meets Love Story.

What you're really saying is that if studios want to repeat that success, they should be developing hybrids of romance stories (chick flick plots) in an epic backdrop. Which is essentially what Atonement was, BTW.

I also disagree with the larger premise of this blog. Instead of spending $300 million trying to make a blockbuster, they should spend $50 million attempting to make six great films; I bet they'd even out in the end, in the overall box office, if they use good filmmakers and let them do their thing. posted 04/10/2008 at 15:50:04

CULTURE ZOHN: Give It Up for Paul Simon

One of my all-time favorite songwriters. And, often overlooked, one of the great guitar players, as any musician knows who tries to learn some of his songs. Some of them would be great just hearing the guitar part by itself, sans vocals: Something So Right, Old Friends, American Tune.

His most under-rated album is "You're The One." It kind of came and went when released in 2001, but contains several of his best songs: Love, Old, Darling Lorraine, and the hilarious Pigs, Sheep, and Wolves.

And of course, Simon is also a great lyricist. "Love" takes on particular significance in this post-9/11 world:

"The price that we pay
When evil walks the planet
And love is crushed like clay
The master races, the chosen peoples
The burning temples, the weeping cathedrals" posted 04/11/2008 at 13:06:09

Top 5 Sexiest Spiritual Icons

Yes, that's George playing guitar. And it's Jeff Lynne, not Jeff Beck!

George's son Dhani and Lynne played some rhythm guitars and added backing vocals to fill out and sweeten the final recording, but George is doing all the lead vocals and lead guitar. Brainwashed was intended to be his swan song; he knew he might not finish it, but he laid down all the main tracks and trusted Jeff Lynne to finish it properly.

On Journalism

What a lot of people don't seem to realize, particularly journalists themselves, is that WRITING is the least important aspect of journalism. The most important is REPORTING, which is the least fun, the least sexy, and the most time-consuming. As Moyers points out, they're often trying to uncover truths that the subject is trying to keep hidden. That takes a lot of hard work and perseverance.

Most writers, of all stripes, are inherently lazy. These days so many "reporters" are mere stenographers, enablers of the Press Release Era we're in. Alleged facts go unchallenged, and the ones in power are allowed to frame the issues, and spin everything their way.

These days, we are so much more like the Soviet Union was in the mid 20th century, where the press acts (or does nothing at all) out of fear of the federal government. And a lot it has to do with the monopolization of the media outlets, which are primarily owned by a handful of companies. Generally, the larger the company, the more conservative they are in terms of appeasing the lowest common denominator. Not only is everything dumbed down and oversimplified, but "bad" news is filtered out. posted 04/07/2008 at 14:20:50

Experienced Reporters Unwanted

My favorite is their need to give live shots to show us that they are out there in the field reporting, even when's there's nothing to show. "I'm standing live outside the building where something happened hours ago. Of course, as you can see behind me, there's nothing happening now, so I could just as well report this from the studio, saving money. Now let's go to an overhead shot from out Terrific Chopper Tracker, showing more nothingness."

BTW, I just saw a promo for one of the local newscasts here in Philly, where they were proudly displaying their five (5!) meteorologists they have on their news team. Talk about a waste of money! They could get rid of every one of them, as far as I'm concerned -- cut out the weather segment entirely and spend more time on, oh......let's think........maybe............more actual news? And when the weather actually matters, the anchor could simply say, "The National Weather Service is predicting blah, blah, blah," and then get on with the news. posted 04/07/2008 at 14:44:02

Paul McCartney Remembers Linda In His Own Words

Ang4ever: here's the documentation you apparently covet so much. Paul showed up at Twickenham Studios in January 1969 with this new song, which he played for the first time while the cameras rolled. He taught it to the other Beatles as they arrived. John played bass. It's ON FILM, genius. But of course, you'll believe whatever you want, obviously. So I'll make it easy for you: Every Beatles song you like was written by someone other than Paul, because he couldn't possibly have written something good. posted 04/08/2008 at 11:37:50
You're completely ignorant, on so many levels. There's nothing "speculative" whatsoever about the authorship of Long and Winding Road. It's all documented in the Let It Be film, as well as famous interviews with John where he clearly spells out who wrote what.

(The only Beatles song where there is ANY dispute of any kind over authorship is In My Life, where John says he wrote it by myself, and Paul says he came up with some of the music.) posted 04/07/2008 at 17:36:22

Survey: "19% Say USA on Right Track." Who ARE These People?

Well, for the 19% (or 14%) their "logic" works this way: America is infallibly the greatest country in the world; whatever America does must therefore be the right thing; America is on the right track.

Of course, this also means America could never be on the wrong track; to admit so would be to allow the possibility that America is NOT the greatest country in the world. And that would be heresy.

I made the initial comparison of Gilliam and Burton, and stand by it. My point being that the director most similar to Burton in terms of being very visual and creative with sets and costumes and somewhat hallucinogenic style is Gilliam. The difference, as originally stated, is that Gilliam has been more successful artistically, while tragically being nowhere near as successful commercially. Gilliam has much more troubling getting financing than Burton, apparently. posted 04/02/2008 at 08:39:31

I haven't felt the urge to buy any of his films on DVD (and I have a lot); the only one I'd like to get someday is Ed Wood, which I agree is his best.

The one director most comparable to Burton is Terry Gilliam. And what a difference! Gilliam, whose films have nowhere near the box office take as Burton's, has produced so many more great, memorable, gotta-have-on-DVD films. (There's no justice, is there?) posted 03/31/2008 at 21:59:25

To twist Groucho: I wouldn't want to belong to any organization that would be this consistently stupid.) posted 03/30/2008 at 17:22:10

Bill Maher's Hillary Clinton Monologue: "Get Elected Or Lie Trying"

No, say it isn't so! A guy who formerly hosted a show called "Politically Incorrect," doing jokes that are................wait for it..............politically incorrect??? I never would have expected that. posted 03/29/2008 at 17:35:10

5 Ways To Mess Up With Bread

Good tips. I would add that when buying whole wheat bread, they are not all the same. Don't be fooled by the "wholesome" claims on the packaging -- look at the ingredients. When the third ingredient listed is high fructose corn syrup, put it down and find a better one. Unfortunately, most of us grew up with white bread sandwiches, and it takes half a lifetime to break that habit. But, if your sandwich has good stuff in it, you won't notice the bread, and eventually will learn to like it. I'm at the point now where regular whole wheat bread (the kind with all the high fructose corn syrup) tastes too plain. posted 03/29/2008 at 15:35:54

Stop-Loss: This Generation's Deer Hunter

It's good to see you've come around. It's surprising, though, that it took you so long. If a film like Deer Hunter, or the new one out now, can turn you around, then you need to see more films: Full Metal Jacket (which shows, more clearly than any movie ever, how the military takes innocents and turns them into killers); In the Valley of Elah (which shows how the experience of combat can permanently fuck up a young person's morality); Badland (a completely ignored film from 2007 that shows, as did Coming Home, the difficulty of a vet dealing with his post-war trauma); and finally, Apocalypse Now (which shows the general madness of the whole thing. And then of course, there are two films from 1970 that should have clarified all this for you years ago: MASH and Catch-22. posted 03/28/2008 at 16:10:23

Woman Says TSA Forced Piercings Removal

Yeah, the irony here is that whole screening process is a farce to begin with. A big show to create the illusion of safety. Or, more to the point, to create the illusion that they're on top of things. Take off your shoes, occasionally get pulled aside for the bigger Dog and Pony act. Effective? Yes, if you're trying to create the illusion; no, if you're actually trying to prevent a future 9/11 (which is not going to involve airplanes anyway, you can be sure. Anything but). posted 03/30/2008 at 19:16:07

25% of Anti-Obama Dems Think He's a Muslim

Well, if he IS a Muslim, then the whole Rev. Wright thing is a complete non-issue, right? posted 03/28/2008 at 13:55:20

Videos: Jesus Found In The Darnedest Places

It's only a matter of time before someone finds: a skid mark in the shape of Jesus!

The funniest part of all this nonsense is, you see what resembles a human face, with a beard. Why is it Jesus? It could just as well be, say, Bin Laden. Or just some scummy homeless dude. Hey, I just saw the face of a crusty old prospector in the tissue after I blew my nose. What, you say that's Jesus?? Hey, you're right -- alert the media! Praise allah....I mean, ummm, Jesus. posted 03/27/2008 at 12:08:58
