10 Time-Hallowed, Recession-Proof Tips For Beautification

Henna is an inexpensive (and chemical free) alternative to hair dye. And you can easily apply it yourself. It comes in several colors and gives tresses a lovely shine.

And I agree completely with sleep. A study recently came out saying that sleep is even more important than exercise for health and long life. As a sufferer of insomnia, I know how precious it is.

(Lesley, I have one small bone to pick with you. You write beautifully, so I was thus a little surprised to see the word "butt" in the posture segment. How about "derriere" or even "bottom?" Sorry if this sounds silly!) posted 05/10/2008 at 02:17:54

Let's Bring Back...Part V

Yes, yes, yes, to all! (Although I will have to Google Simon Sez.)

As for corsets, they do not have to be torturous, as in the models of yesteryear. Dita von Teese is adorable and proof that one does not have to be crude or obvious to be sensuous. I will add tap pants to the list, the variety that come to the waistline and button up the side, usually of silk or satin. As a teen I used to sew my own.

Please keep these coming Lesley! posted 05/07/2008 at 16:18:11

Eight Belles Coverage: Did NBC Blow It?

Horse racing is not a sport. It is a cruel practice (that makes loads of money for a few) and it should be banned. It is not worth the lives, pain, and suffering of these magnificent creatures. Yes, horses like to run. But, like humans, they do not like to be injured or die for the sake of "sport." Especially because it is not their choice. I understand I may hold a minority view, but please, think twice before you go to the track and thus condone this horrible activity.

It is just like the circus, bullfighting, dog racing, et cetera. By taking part one ensures that the cruelty continues. Let's boycott such spectacles so the lives of precious creatures can be spared. posted 05/06/2008 at 02:04:43

Old? No, We're Just Older

I recently read that there will be a shortage of doctors to treat the geriatric set. I guess that's a good field of specialization for those in medical school.

I suddenly felt advanced in years when I suddenly realized one day that I was older than my doctors, bank clerks, most shop clerks, police, fire fighters, waiters--even politicians (well, except Hillary and McCain). As I did when a helpful young bag boy at the grocery store offered "Would you like some help out to your car M'am?" And just a couple years before I'd been carded while buying spirits. From youngish chick to aged dame in barely the wink of an eye--disconcerting to put it mildly! posted 05/01/2008 at 06:49:10

Americans Sell Prized Possessions To Make Ends Meet (And How You Can, Too)

Very sad. American workers should not have to part with cherished belongings to pay the water bill, or any bill.

Too many jobs have been shipped overseas. We are importing far too many Chinese goods. I can only hope the next administration will address these urgent problems. But I'm not holding my breath. posted 05/01/2008 at 07:03:54

Debate: Do Pets Make Us Happier?

They bring tremendous happiness, companionship, better health, unconditional love, humor, and so much more. I especially love the feeling of adopting a cat (I am fond of both but now have just cats) from a shelter. When I brought my last kitty home he just looked around and around and couldn't believe all the space suddenly at his disposal. He explored everything and then stretched out in a spot of sun. Bliss (for us both). My only complaint is that they don't live long enough. But I suppose that means we are are able to adopt more. posted 05/01/2008 at 06:03:06

Israel's UN Ambassador Calls Jimmy Carter A "Bigot"

President Carter should be commended for trying to bring peace to the area. It is shameful that the ambassador called him a bigot. It is finally becoming clear to me that the government of Israel does not want peace with the Palestinians. But they certainly don't mind cashing our checks for billions that could be better spent here at home. Why must we always be so completely uncritical of Israel? posted 04/25/2008 at 06:06:58

Why Sting And I Set Up The Rainforest Foundation Fund

Trudie, I remember when you and Sting went on the world tour with the Chief and how touched I was seeing him speak on t.v. Thank you very much for all you are doing to stop this horrendous atrocity. Bless you both.

By the way, for those who question your living in a castle on hundreds of acres, I say bravo! Would those who question this prefer it be converted into council flats or factory farms? Brigitte Bardot On Trial For Muslim Slur

Miss Bardot is speaking for those with no voice, no vote, those who are completely at the mercy of man's whims.

How tiring, the claim that some people care more about animals than people. Can't people care for both? Some just choose to champion animals because of the endless threats they face: vivisection, baby seal clubbing, whale slaughter, factory farming, being put to sleep by the millions because there are not enough homes, fur, animal sacrifice, bull fights, cock fights, dog fights, circuses, ivory poaching, habitat destruction, extinction---shall I go on?

Why are you threatened by people speaking out on these horrors? posted 04/19/2008 at 20:16:27
I am livid that this tireless worker for animal welfare must be dragged through the courts for simply speaking the truth. She, like Doris Day, has devoted the best years of her life to animal protection work. In return, she is forced to face indignities like this absurd trial.

TNT's Ringling Reality Series: Sickest Show On Earth?

Bless you Duncan Strauss! Each year when I hear advertisements for the circus I just cringe. Do people going to the "Cruelest Show on Earth" simply not care about the horrific abuses? I'm sure children would be terribly upset by what happens to the magnificent animals they watch, but their parents who presumably know about the cruelty don't seem phased.

DemandTruth: If a circus comes to your town you might join an animal welfare group handing out leaflets stating the abuses Mr. Strauss outlined. Thank you also for your part in obtaining her honorary Oscar and British honour. (Yes, she should have been made a dame.) I'm sure she took great pleasure in your friendship. Television's Trendsetters: Who They Are And What They Wear

I'm not much of a follower of modern trends. My inspiration for fashion comes more from movies of the 1920s-1950s which I'll mix with modern pieces. I'm not moved by today's trend for big, ugly, expensive designer handbags. I'd rather use a black velvet bag and pin on a vintage brooch. The Explorer's Club: Endangering Animals One Dinner At A Time

Such people are so hypocritical.
