The one thing we learn from history: we don't learn from it. (#194939)

See, Des, I'm not sure Americans understand the threat we face. You're all about condemning these Conservative Monsters, and if I was thirty years younger, I might feel the same way. But it's funny to see Liberals all hot and bothered about the likes of Glenn Beck and Newt-boy and the erstwhile Bush administration. At my age, and presumably yours at present time, we were all upset with LBJ and Nixon about their prescriptive wars. But I was a Believer in Democracy. I just haaaad to go off and do my duty.
You didn't live through the aftermath of Vietnam, the dreary Carter years of gasoline queues and Nixon's Wage and Price Controls, or the dismal Gerald Ford administration. Unemployment and underemployment were as high then as it is now on a percentage basis. The bottom fell out of our manufacturing industries. Disco and cocaine and polyester shirts happened, dude! America lost its goddamn mind.
Obama's a shrewd customer, but really, he's just Clinton redux. Don't look to him to make the big decisions: he won't, because there are political consequences to everything he does. If he had any strategic sense, he'd do what he promised in the elections. He won't. He's just talking, like Bill Clinton talked.
