Bio
I was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1930. I am married to Alice Berney for 55 years and we have two sons, Lawrence and Ronald, and three grandchildren. I received Undergraduate and Law degrees from the University of Virginia. I am a retired Constitutional Law Professor and have strong ongoing interests in my subject field and in Politics.

I have spent most of my career as an activist and a reformer. I am a proud liberal and do not shy away when some call me a leftist. Much of professional life was to devoted to "causes." I was active in the Civil Rights movement, and a strong opponent of the U.S. wars of choice in Vietnam, Iraq and now Afghanistan. I co-authored two law casebooks, in previously unknown law course fields: Poverty Law in 1974, and National Security in 1995. The latter is still in publication. I authored pro bono briefs. In 1967 "as Counsel" I drafted the Substantive Due Process argument in Loving v. Virginia, the case in which The Supreme Court struck down the ban on interracial marriage. I have contributed pro bono briefs based in support of same sex marriages. I have always sought the "cutting edge" in any legal subject I became interested in. I still do.
