The military got to tell the story of WWI and WWII their way because they won in righteous conflicts (history is written by the victors). We (anti-useless illegal wars, crowd) won Vietnam and will eventually win Iraq. I totally agree Arianna, but I see no way back now. Obama has pretty well locked himself into this weak kneed model. The thing I find most surprising is that Axelrod would find this a smart strategy. He just never seemed like the "tack to the center" sort of guy.
It's been pointed out by many here and other places that the "independent" vote isn't what it used to be. There seems to me to be well defined battle lines in this election and there's just not as much room for the dithering idiots of the middle. I would be surprised if they amount to 10% of the vote. I disagree, by Clinton's second term I found out enough about him that caused me to vote independent that year. The reason's had nothing to do with his philandering and everything to do with his obvious love of the almighty dollar.
