McCain Changes POW Story For Local Sports Team

Senate Passes FISA Bill, Gives Telecoms Immunity

And even after receiving $206K in "telecom money" (I'm just trusting your figures for the purpose of this discussion), he STILL supported and voted for an amendment to the bill that just passed that would have stripped them of immunity. Too bad the rest of the Democratic Congress didn't support it or him.

His political reality deserves some consideration. He knew there was no way this bill would pass. And he assumed (rightly, I'm sure), that the GOP would have beaten him forevermore with a "soft on terrorists" label if he had voted against the bill. He truly was between a rock and a hard place, and I do hope criminal prosecution of the telecoms AND the president is a real possibility. posted 07/09/2008 at 18:05:58
It is not clear to me that this bill prevents criminal prosecution of the president. It provides retroactive immunity to the telecoms (pertaining to lawsuits), but does it provide to the president retroactive immunity from being prosecuted for criminal acts? posted 07/09/2008 at 18:01:31
You might have a point IF electing a president was a one-issue concern and IF the issue were as simple as you present it to be. He supported and voted for an amendment to this bill that would have stripped immunity. The vote was unsuccessful. If the bill -- tainted as Obama and most of us feel it was without that amendment -- had not passed, other issues had to balanced. At this point, given the excellent judgment he has exercised in so many other areas, I am choosing to trust his judgment on this one. We must consider that he understands his politically reality far better than we do, as well as the fact that no matter how he personally voted, this bill was not going to pass.

How sad for the country that so many in Congress have so little regard for our constitution and the law. Blaming Obama for what all of them have wrought is foolish. posted 07/09/2008 at 16:44:54

McCain Freezing Out Press On Campaign Trail

He isn't, and no one says he is. But he himself has made a big deal about how much the press loves him. Apparently the love is not returned, and he might find himself with a new set of problems as a result. McCain's 'Deficit Reduction' Plan Would Cost Trillions

"Start hearing" all about the success in Iraq? The Sunday morning pundits were at it in full force, talking about how undeniably the "surge has succeeded." Succeeded . . . how? If the only measure is how fast people in Iraq are killing each other, I guess you could call it a success at this moment in time, at least from a purely American point of view. But how appalling if that IS the only measure, because of course that would mean that we have to keep this level of troops there forever just to keep people in Iraq from killing each other. McCain Gets "Visibly Angry" When Asked About Military Experience

He appears to be running primarily on his record as POW, so asking him how being a POW prepared him for the presidency is certainly a legitimate question. I notice that, at least per this report, he never did answer the question . . . unless loving one's country is preparation enough.

At no time did Clark question his military service or patriotism. So this blustering over Clark's audacity in pointing out that being a POW alone doesn't qualify one for the presidency clearly is a standard distraction technique. And exactly how is increasing drilling going to help us in the short term? Can we wave your magic wand and start drilling in new fields tomorrow? Of course not! It would take several years for new oil fields to go into production and have any effect on prices.

I agree on nationalizing oil, and further submit that we need to regulate oil speculation ASAP, since it's estimated that speculators have created "demand" that's equal to China's, contributing to the current high prices. But I also think we should be investing the same money and time we would invest in new oil fields on new energy sources. Or maybe you think we should just go on opening new oil fields until there simply aren't anymore. And what then, assuming we'll continue to be as resistant to adopting renewable energy in the future as we are today? When exactly will weaning ourselves off oil be an easy thing to do? Never, that's when! posted 06/18/2008 at 16:41:05

(ANWR oil would add just 1.4 percent to the supply, at most -- according to the current amdministration's most recent report. ) And, according to you, we'd still be completely dependent on foreign oil. There are alternatives to gas that would take no more time to develop than new oil fields would, and would solve our problems a lot more permanently than drilling for oil. When are we going to be willing to make the sacrifices we should have made long ago to prevent this problem? We all knew it was coming, yet some seem to think the answer is to just keep doing what we've been doing all along, and that somehow it'll work out better next time. And there will be a next time. We were warned in the 70's. Yet here we are again, 30 years later!

You'd think people would be smart enough to figure that out, and to decide that instead of investing this money and time to create more oil fields in America, we should invest it in resources that are renewable and will wean us off our oil dependency once and for all (also good for foreign policy reasons, of course). Before placing blame on the Democratic Party for "stone-walling," perhaps it would be worthwhile to consider some facts. Have you bothered to research the impact on world production and oil prices that ANWR or increased off-shore drilling would have? Here's a clue from our current administration's most recent "Analysis of Crude Oil Production in the Alaska Native Wildlife Reserve." Since this administration is so gung-ho about increasing domestic oil production rather than reducing our reliance on oil, even you should believe it:

"With respect to the world oil price impact, projected ANWR oil production constitutes between 0.4 and 1.2 percent of total world oil consumption . . .. Consequently, ANWR oil production is not projected to have a large impact on world oil prices. " (Full report at http://www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/servicerpt/anwr/results.html.")

What are YOU doing to reduce your own reliance on oil? Your post implies that you are simply expecting the government to bail you out by providing a solution for you. How does that jibe with the Republican Party's enthusiasm for self-reliance and smaller government? posted 06/16/2008 at 14:06:57

Obama's Father's Day Speech Urges Black Fathers To Be More Engaged In Raising Their Children

As the article says, he was speaking at the Apostolic Church of God, in Chicago. Upon reading your concern, I looked up the church's web site (which you could have done in less time than it took to write your post.) Here's the link: http://www.acog-chicago.org/. Draw your own conclusions. posted 06/16/2008 at 15:03:28

Tom Brokaw Hosts Special Meet The Press, Honors Russert With Empty Chair, Video Montage (VIDEO)

You know what really touched me about this segment? Watching Brokaw choke up, then seeing his colleague Mike Barnicle step in to provide cover while Brokaw regained his composure. How well that moment revealed the mutual respect, admiration, and concern these hard-charging men have for each other! It was a lovely thing to see, and I like to believe Russert was warmed by it, as well -- wherever he is. posted 06/16/2008 at 13:09:02

When Bill Clinton Met Mayhill Fowler on the Rope Line

When there is a vacuum, people fill it. If "professional journalists" were doing their jobs well, there would be no vacuum for "citizen journalists" such as Fowler to fill, and this argument over the rules of journalistic conduct would be moot. posted 06/13/2008 at 16:26:34

John Cusack Discusses "War Inc." On "Morning Joe," Knocks Bill O'Reilly

You're exactly right, but it's a different screen name every time -- so no way to ban by name, at least. Irritating and stupid, because it's fooling no one. posted 06/13/2008 at 13:49:17

Keith Olbermann Backlash Fueled By Declaration Of Katie Couric As "Worst Person In The World"

I find it fascinating that the most conservative posters on this blog also appear to be the least educated, as evidenced by the misspellings and incorrect grammar their posts typically include . . . such as the above. Such proud demonstrations of their lack of education kind of detract from their credibility, don't they? ;-) posted 06/12/2008 at 19:53:34
Yep -- I agree and actually meant to include that point. KO does *not* make stuff up and dress it up as "fact." posted 06/12/2008 at 19:48:27
That said (see below), I think Ms. Couric is completely out to lunch. Clinton and her campaign team were their own worst enemies and have only themselves to blame. posted 06/12/2008 at 18:04:17
Y'know, I was really relieved to discover Keith Olbermann. But lately, I'm finding his increasingly histrionic on-screen persona harder and harder to take, and more like O'Lielly's. There's one important exception that keeps me watching so far: Keith doesn't attempt to present opinion as fact like Bill-O does. Clearly much of what Keith says *is* opinion -- and I often agree with him. Still, I don't think one blowhard is better than another simply because I agree with his politics.
I long for the days when news and entertainment were separate! If only there were a network outside PBS principled enough to simply reports news in depth . . . posted 06/12/2008 at 18:01:35

McCain In 2005: I "Totally" Support Bush On The "Transcendent Issues" (VIDEO)

And yet the MSM still calls him a "maverick" every single day without batting an eye. Lord, they are worthless! posted 06/12/2008 at 12:42:14

Supreme Court Rules Guantanamo Detainees Have Constitutional Right To Challenge Detention

You make a very interesting point. Thanks. posted 06/12/2008 at 12:40:01
Are we a nation of laws or not? If not, what makes us any different from countries that detain *our* citizens without due process? You want us to be no different from them? If that's true, then what the heck makes us "America"? Sheesh! I'm disgusted by anti-American comments like these. posted 06/12/2008 at 12:37:23
