"Firearms WILL NOT Be Allowed In Hall"

That worked well when citizens - such as the patriots and rebels of the revolutionary war, who in many cases brought their own weapons with them, which was the defining context when the constitution was written, had pretty much the same weapons as the British army.

Rifles and revolvers are almost quaint compared to the tools available to a would-be dictatorship. The billions spent for the military-industrial complex so completely outclasses the entirety of the weapons held by citizens that it becomes close to a moot point with regards to any "governmental" attempt to usurp the government.

This is what makes things like a national ID card, Bush's essential takeover of National Guard units, TSA, and other security apparatus with national scope so troublesome - the Governors would be the only ones who could put up independent resistance in the case of some extra-constitutional crisis. Now they are becoming neutralized. States rights - gone. The federal government became all-powerful, instead of being a common forum.

House GOP: Can it Get Any Worse

That fits with something I have come to call "customer abuse", which is where a company sticks to all sorts of arbitrary and capricious rules in order avoid giving anything back to the customer. The loss of goodwill eventually drives the customer away from repeat business, and the bad publicity reduces the number of new customers. Example: long distance phone companies.

The GOP has brought customer abuse to a new level, and many of those customers will not be returning any time soon. posted 05/11/2008 at 22:39:14
As opposed to the Republican financial strategy of putting America in debt to China and Saudi Arabia with no means to pay it off in short enough times so that they would actually pay for anything, instead leaving it to our children and grand children to pay off, with interest.

The Republicans are turning America into an indentured servant for the rest of the world. Good job at selling and selling out the United States. You did what 230 years of empires couldn't do. posted 05/11/2008 at 22:04:31

An Outrage: V.A. Official Who Covered Up Veterans' Suicides Won't Lose Job

It's healthiest for them to stay within the military system and to not return to general society. It's best that they keep their experiences locked inside, where nobody else will know. It's safest for them to work things out alone, without friends or family helping with it.

For the administration.

However, when they come home their experiences and situations will become known, one at a time, until their individual stories converge so that the general patterns can be clearly seen. The stories of the soldiers are kept quiet in the same way that photographs of the flag-draped coffins are kept out of view - to restrict, as much as possible, any sense that there are costs or suffering associated with the war. posted 05/10/2008 at 23:57:19

Vallejo's Bankruptcy Might Have Been Prevented

That cities rely on property value alone to determine property tax is fundamentally unstable. They get money as the economy ebbs and flows; it also encourages something of a conflict of interest when property values are determined.

A better way would be to say that the city will levy, suppose, $10 million each year - regardless of the actual value. The allocation per property would be based on it's proportion of the property value in the city. Therefore, the property owner can reliably predict the tax burden they face. Retired people don't get hit with costs rising unpredictably faster then their income.

When property taxes are based on value, and the value goes up due to inflation, causing the taxes to go up, what extra service does the homeowner get? Likely, none. It also keeps the city from feeling too rich in good times, and keeps them afloat in bad times. posted 05/09/2008 at 22:47:47

Speed Racer Reviews: The "Mind-Numbing" Movie "Limps"

Yes, I too watched it. It was on at 6:00 in the morning on Sundays, just before "Hercules". I remember it being interesting. Consider when it was made: early 1960's Japan - only 15 years after the war. The rotation view of Speed jumping out the car really wouldn't be seen again until the Matrix (which I have not seen). For the time it definitely has it's merits.

A remake of Mahha Go Go Go shouldn't be frenetic or sappy - it needs some level of quiet and seriousness to balance out, and to pick up the feel of the original. It sounds like the remake broke those rules. They should have spent some time watching Kamen Rider.

1) How is a country completely cut off from energy and raw material supplies going to put up resistance "for years" that is worth even trying to take over? A simple blockade would result in de-facto victory.

2) Why bomb civilian targets? What about military targets? If a land invasion would have taken "years", why not go after military targets closer to Tokyo where it was massed? The fact that the targets were so remote completely removes the argument about how long a land invasion would last, because if they didn't give up, then the land invasion would need to happen anyway, and without destroying military targets, the bombs would have been for naught. It's like starting an invasion of New York by bombing Alabama.

3) Nagasaki was 3 days after Hiroshima. Japan at that time was already dysfunctional - the top leadership had no details about what actually happened. Those cities are isolated by several hundred miles of rough terrain in the best of conditions - travel and communications were slow and difficult. At the very least a week could have been left to let the full extent of what happened be investigated.

4) You can't completely discount the interest to demonstrate the technology. What good is a weapon if nobody knows about it? This was done most pointedly for the Russian's "benefit".

5) What about the revenge factor - a sneak attack, years of war, hardships - against an enemy who was unknown, faceless, and regarded as the posted 04/28/2008 at 01:04:23

Who is going to pay your (at this time, and growing) $30,000 share of the national debt? You, or your kids? Grandkids?

Who benefits from all that debt? The case can be made that the benefit is probably in proportion to the amount of wealth one has. Therefore, someone with $10,000,000 in assets is "responsible" for 100 times as much as someone with $100,000.

Budget deficits and national debt amount to nothing more than wealth redistribution from those who have the least - children - and transfer it to those who have the most. My answers:

1) Higher and higher automatic tax rates to cover the deficit and around 3% of the debt. They get reduced when the deficit goes down and the debt is paid off.

2) An actual "Death Tax" prorated to how much you had and how old you were to determine your portion of the debt. Automatically confiscated from your estate. It's only fair: if you benefited then you should pay.
