Voters now see the Republicans TRACK RECORD. It's not "cynicism" the voters are rejecting --it's REPUBLICANISM.

Voters have been moving left for several years and two national elections, but the Clintons either didn't see it or refused to adapt.

The Clintons presumed a low-energy, low power electorate and offered them some of their patented Republican LIte.

But the electorate was energized, they don't WANT Republican Lite, and they're newly empowered by the Internet. Obama saw those trends and built a far superior campaign machine than the virtual incumbent Clintons with all their connections and support network.

The Clintons lost not so much style as substance. They built an inferior machine and offered an inferior political product. posted 05/07/2008 at 11:21:37

Great interview, I enjoyed hearing it this morning.

Alas, stupidity has consequences.

The framers had the foresight to try to prevent an imperial executive. It never occurred to them there might be an equal threat of a _criminal_ executive, reduced by putting some prosecutorial power outside the executive branch.

The executive branch gets to decline to prosecute itself, and since it also has pardon power, it can prevent all subsequent executive branches prosecuting its misdeeds. posted 04/30/2008 at 02:13:08

I don't get the point about the insistence that rape is "about" power. Violence, power and control are used in this world to obtain things that aggressors want. The violence is used because the victim or victim population DON'T MATTER to the aggressor.

I don't see why it's necessary to insist that rapists aren't seeking sex. Unless the term "sex" feels too consensual.

In that case, OK, call it orgasm.

I lived near a battered women's shelter, and I've had a number of women friends tell me of being raped or injuriously imposed upon by SO's or family members, and I've seen the dimensions of injury it causes. So I have no intent here to question severity.

It occurs to me that being attacked for purposes of control almost confers a degree of importance on the victim, whereas being brutalized for a brief gain because the victim just didn't matter to the attacker could be an even more devastating experience. posted 04/13/2008 at 02:48:38

I think the point is that government is not passing those laws, needed or not. The issue is how to bring government around to doing the big jobs that are beyond the people, and that requires popular pressure, and before that we have to make contact with the people and persuade them.

Just because a job desperately needs doing doesn't mean it's possible for us to do it, especially if immediate action is needed. posted 04/10/2008 at 01:06:44
I don't recall a lot of reaching out to opponents.

What Gandhi and King and their movements did was to confront their opponents nonviolently, to embarrass and shame them.

This works with people and with elected governments. I seriously doubt it can work with corporations and their propagandists, first because they're command structures, and second because they own and operate our public discourse.

Now there may be an Obama-esque opportunity to reach out positively to citizens and voters.

On the other hand, Obama is doing it mainly by touring and speaking at campaign rallies, in part because it's far too expensive to hire the mainstream media to reach the people. But that means it's laboriously slow.

It will take us years, maybe a decade or more to reach and persuade enough of the general electorate manually. posted 04/10/2008 at 01:04:00
