Who'll Cure Our Kids, Big Pharma Or Small Farmers?

Sadly Americans have been sold the notion that good health comes from a pill bottle and that a good diet and exercise have little to do with it. After all, if we all manage to stay healthy how will big pharma make any money from us?

I want you to know that I appreciate your post. I"ve just finished reading Barbara Kingsolver"s "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" and I"m convinced our support of local growers will be to our own benefit.

In my career I"ve attended countless meetings which, with the exception of wasted time, accomplished little. What we need to do is find a local farmer"s market and support their effort rather than just going to the supermarket to buy "mystery food." Yes, I know they list the ingredients on the box, but do any of us actually know what those opaque names stand for?

Finally, your piece could well have done without the gratuitous slander of Senator Clinton. The last time I looked she was still one of us, a Democrat. If that"s your way of healing the party I assure you it will not work! posted 05/15/2008 at 13:34:35

More On Barbara Boxer And Proposition 98

I've already voted in the June primary and I can assure you, I voted against proposition 98 and for proposition 99.

Proposition 98 should be removed from the California ballot. It is deceptively titled and has as its only purpose the abolishment of local rent controls. The Secretary of State should have insisted that it be more honestly titled . Those who signed the petition to place it on the ballot were also likely deceived.

California voters should not vote for this measure, proposition 99 adequately addresses the concern that government will misuse the power of eminent domain. posted 05/14/2008 at 18:44:33

Here's a bit of information all of you obamabots are eager to deal with. Take a look at the map of the 2004 national election. What you will see is a country painted red with blue spots across it, the majority of which are tiny (source-USA today 2004 election). Like it or not, the reality is that the majority of our fellow countrymen are politically right-of-center. When our party nominates a candidate who has an established identity as a "liberal," we are saying to them that they "must come to us." Something that they have demonstrated time after time that they will not do. To make matters worse, Senator Obama is a newbie, who in the main is an unknown who has not yet convinced the American public that it should vote for him.

If you want to establish a liberal consencus across this nation, it will be necessary for us to "go to them." Slander as Senator Obama made in San Francisco against working white folks, and as you commentators are doing here against someone who they might vote for, will in the end only work against us. posted 05/14/2008 at 13:35:56

Amy Goodman is Wrong About Food Price Inflation

II think that the baseball analogy is totally inappropriate. There are lives in the balance and it's much more serious than you let on. This is not a game.

A country that is experiencing inflation has too much cash* in its economy or too few goods and services. It is much more likely that both of these conditions are at fault. The immediate response should be to take some cash out of the economy by taxing it from those who have it and throw it into the furnace, yes I said throw it into the furnace.

If the government has control of its Federal Reserve Bank, the creation of cash can be slowed by raising the reserve banks must hold against their assets, making it more difficult for them to create cash by making loans.

But what is a nation to do when it has stupidly papered the world with its money, as the United States has, and surrendered its control over it? The formula is the same except this time it means tariffs on incoming goods and a much needed turning around of a negative balance of trade. The object again is to remove the excess cash from the economy.

If you are rich, then I"m sorry to tell you there will be more taxes. It"s that awful Willie Sutton effect; you tax the rich because that"s where the money is.

* I"m using the word cash for all the different forms of money, including credit. posted 05/07/2008 at 23:38:33

What a nice little dream you were having, it must have been painful to wake up.

It"s not just the candidates. We can no longer trust in anyone or anything because it has all been bought, paid for and is being used against us. Just like all of the other "businesses," the media has respect for neither its customers (readers) nor its workers (reporters). We are left to our selves to figure out what the truth is, what is actually happening in our world and to discover the agenda that"s now incorporated in all reporting.

Is it any wonder then that newspaper subscriptions are declining? That news programming has to turn to Anna Nicole Smith or Brittany Spears to even gain our attention? Of course, we are the ones to blame, it couldn"t be the obviously slanted news they"re offering us, or the news that they refused to report.

But back to the candidates, they want to be whose president? If they don"t feel they owe us a truthful answer even if they"re eating breakfast, maybe we shouldn"t vote for them. posted 05/05/2008 at 14:25:39

Embrace Your Inner Elitist

Gee, this sure sounds like "eliteism" to me.

Do you think that an Ivy League diploma is an indication of "superior" intelligence? Then I hate to tell you that G.W. Bush has one of those too, it's the best diploma money can buy.

I'm a rural citizen. Do you think I merely parrot the right wing media as well? I don't know what Obama's IQ is, but mine regulary measures at 125, just above normal. Does that make him better then me? Just what do you think qualifies Obama to be our president? His two books? His Orange Juice and arugula? Or should I be running for president? No, I'm smart enough to know better than that, too bad he isn't.

Hi Michael, I just have one question for you. I"ll grant that Obama is educated, well read, articulates himself brilliantly, and doesn"t lose his temper. On top of that he"s likely a very nice guy, someone I"d like to have a beer with, err make that an orange juice. But what experience does he have? Has he run even a middle sized business, a charity, any middle to large size organization?

The only modern-day president we"ve had without some kind of managerial or leadership experience was John F. Kennedy. He was the last sitting Senator to be elected president. It was a gamble for the American people to elect him, we got lucky. Go all the way back to Woodrow Wilson, who served as the president of Princeton University, to George W. Bush, who was the Governor of Texas, you will see that they all had some experience managing and making decisions. John F. Kennedy was the only exception. And yes, decision making is a skill that must be learned and practiced.

Whether you like it or not, I"m pulling for the candidate who has displayed at least some of those skills, from making a significant improvement in the Arkansas educational system to Hillarycare. You do remember Hillarycare don"t you? It was defeated in the Senate when then majority leader Mitchell offered up a compromise version that was summarily defeated by the Republicans. posted 04/30/2008 at 12:51:56

Gas hits $3.60 a gallon, crude nears $120 on supply outages

Try to understand that you don't have to buy it. You don't need a Chevy Suburban to drive yourself to work, get yourself a small fuel efficient car and if you can, car pool! If you can walk, ride a bicycle, or take public transportation do it! Nothing is more wasteful than Metro buses plying their routes empty. You can do something about that, ride them.

The revolution could be as simple as each one of us finding ways to use as little gasoline as possible and starve the beast that's trying to exploit us. posted 04/29/2008 at 12:49:14
It's NOT just the falling dollar, Shell's profits have increased by 25% (see the headlines at the top of this section) so far this year and other petroleum companies are also seeing increasing profits. Gasoline prices have spectaculary outpaced the decline in the dollar. Something else is happening.

As the third world becomes more affulent, they are adopting our lifestyle and buying more gasoline as a result. The main force driving up gas prices is growing demand. It's time for us to get away from an economy that's based on petroleum to some form of energy that's more sustainable. Sadly, we've lost control of our government and as long as the business is profitable here nothing's going to change.

We, you and I, have to learn to sip from the world's fuel tank. That's easier said than done because it involves some sacrifice. Walking when you can, riding a bicycle, taking public transportation, etc. Don't wait for someone else to do that. We all have to do it, or it won't work. posted 04/29/2008 at 12:14:24

Bring Back the 90% Top Tax Rate!

Business aren't leaving this country! They may be manufacturing goods overseas, but they're bringing them back to America to sell them. That's not leaving, it's exploiting cheap labor!

When Henry Ford was just starting out his fellow industrialists would criticize him for paying his employees too well. His answer was "I want them to be able to by their own automobiles." Inspiration Versus Degradation

Erica, you said that inspiration is hard to find. How so? I was inspired way before Obama came on the scene. George W. Bush inspired me when he sent our troops into Iraq turning me into a shrill whistle warning anyone who would listen how wrong it was. I wrote letters to the editor almost every day until they explained to me they could only print 2 per week, so I began writing to other papers. I also began commenting on several blogs. As you can see I still am.

I don't care about Reverend Wright, but what he said was f**k**g awful and on a par with Falwell's blaming our society's liberalism for 9-11, and I said so.

The Housing Market is Nowhere Near Bottom

Ah, if only it were that simple. To some extent you are of course right, but the nature of these loans was what made that kind irresponsibility possible. There"s plenty of blame to go around, everyone was thoroughly convinced that home values would increase forever.

This isn"t the first time this country has gone through this. In the late 1920"s home "owners" would take a two or three thousand dollar mortgage to buy a house and pay interest only on the mortgage. They were relying that the property would only increase in value and that they would be able to refinance it at the end of the loan. It didn"t work then either. One of the first things FDR did was set up the HOLC (Home Owner"s Loan Corporation) which spent two billion dollars buying delinquent mortgages from America"s Savings and Loans Banks. It also offered home owners affordable loans with terms of 20 to 30 years.

As far as being a business hater, perhaps you haven"t noticed but I have, business has a tendency to become predatory when unrestrained by regulation. Commerce then reverts to a brawl where the "best?" is the only one left standing. Greed is NOT good, it"s destructive! posted 04/28/2008 at 14:25:53
It's not just about the ARM's anymore. Even if you have a conforming loan, stay in your house and make your payments, your property is losing value and in this market you can quickly find yourself upside down.. That's already happening to some homeowners so we're not far from seeing some of them walking away from their mortgages. posted 04/28/2008 at 01:03:59

One Dozen Governments Will Fall

You are wrong if you think there is no connection between petroleum and food. When you go to the supermarket and buy apricots out of season, where do you think they came from? They were probably grown in South America or Africa. I can just imagine the natives picking fruit to send to us while their own children"s stomachs are distended with malnutrition and starvation. That business plan is totally based on injustice, both social and economical and it is reliant on the use of petroleum. It too contributes to global warming.

As to the other, I"m constantly reminded of a commercial I saw where one of a group of hikes was sinking in quicksand. The "leader?" discussed the merits possible rescues while his group listened earnestly and their companion continued to sink. One of them finally realized that the talk was going nowhere and threw a rope to the guy in the quicksand.

No one"s going to throw us a rope, so we need to do this ourselves.
Step one; begin sipping on gasoline rather than guzzling it, buy a smaller car for your commute or move closer to where you work. Walk or use public transportation when you can. A new bicycle might be nice.
Step two; eagerly embrace new technologies that promise to reduce carbon emissions.
Step three; Begin a firestorm demanding that our representatives stop talking and begin doing something effective to prevent global climate change. posted 04/28/2008 at 15:38:15

Arthur represented this relationship by drawing an upside down parabola on his dinner napkin. If his contention was correct, his diagram could be reduced to an equation that would be solvable for the rate that would guarantee those maximum recipients. However, when doing so the need to normalize the equation introduces constants (variables?) that have no discernable counterpart in real life. This isn't real math nor is it real economics. Previous to Flag Day, June 14, 1923 there were no federal or state regulations governing display of the United States Flag. It was on this date that the National Flag Code was adopted by the National Flag Conference which was attended by representatives of the Army and Navy which had evolved their own procedures, and some 66 other national groups. This purpose of providing guidance based on the Army and Navy procedures relating to display and associated questions about the U. S. Flag was adopted by all organizations in attendance.

A few minor changes were made a year later during the Flag Day 1924 Conference, It was not until June 22, 1942 that Congress passed a joint resolution which was amended on December 22, 1942 to become Public Law 829; Chapter 806, 77th Congress, 2nd session. Exact rules for use and display of the flag (36 U.S.C. 173-178) as well as associated sections (36 U.S.C. 171) Conduct during Playing of the National Anthem, (36 U.S.C. 172) the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, and Manner of Delivery were included.

Beyond Gotcha: In Search of Democratic Economics

When did you make your first billion?
There is a limit to how much money you can actually use. To quote Bud Fox from the movie "Wall Street" "How many yachts can you water ski behind?" The resulting wide disparity in incomes actually does damage to our economy by causing inflation. When you think about it, you have to ask yourself; What can anyone do or accomplish that's actually worth a billion dollars? To be utterly realistic about it, most of that billion dollars is actually stolen money! So having a maximum wage after which taxes become confiscatory is not an idiotic, but a very good idea and necessary if our country is to have a healthy economy. Newsflash: Populism Is Popular

David, I never fail to read your posts and I mostly agree with you. So for just this once, please let me disagree with you on a minor matter. Populism is NOT an ideology! It is caring about yourself, your family, your neighborhood, your towns and cities, your states, your country and your fellow citizens. It is joining with those citizens who demand fair treatment and respect, demanding it for yourself and those in your communities. I see liberalism as a part of populism that informs and drives it. We should NEVER knuckle down to leaders of any stripe, whether or not they claim to be on our side. We have the right to make demands of them, we pay their wages and they serve at OUR pleasure.

It is a disgrace that we have had to drive these "leaders?" to populism! posted 04/17/2008 at 18:31:46

The Charlotte Observer series is littered with stories and images of workers crippled by their duties, and stories of management cutting corners not only on safety but on appropriate medical treatments when problems do arise."

Sally, is this the kind of America you want? One that has a large peonage of dis-empowered people who don't dare to even speak up for themselves? Who sneak across our borders and displace those who have legal status here but end up in that same peonage themselves?

Are you aware of the war going on just south of our border? Mexican drug gangs are murdering each other and innocent bystanders in open combat. They import illegal drugs into our country by the ton.

Until we control our borders, we are complicit in all of this. We have a responsibility to our own citizens, those illegals who die in their attempts at entry, and to those who are being killed in these terrible drug wars, to regain control of our borders! posted 04/21/2008 at 13:45:48

"Here should be an objective of Government itself, to provide at least as much assistance to the little fellow as it is now giving to the large banks and corporations" Franklin D. Roosevelt, April 7, 1932. We haven't heard anything like this since. FDR had it right but we're not going to get this kind of attention unless we demand it. Our government should be afraid of us, not the other way around. It's our and our children's money they"re spending and we have every right to demand a good return on it. I'm a populist who allows his liberalism to inform his populism and I'm not happy with any of the current choices. I will however, vote for the Democratic nominee but I think he or she should be running scared. Otherwise we will be stuck with NAFTA and trade agreements that only guarantee more unemployment for our own citizens, an ongoing war, and politics as usual. Obama isn"t being forced to answer these tough questions, neither are Hillary or McCain.

It doesn"t matter what Obama meant. What he said was insulting and he should apologize for his remarks. What"s so hard about that?

About questions and hints; The Warren Harding story is an illustration of what can go wrong if you judge a candidate by his/her appearance. I think that if we are smart we will be a tough crowd demanding real answers from these candidates. posted 04/16/2008 at 17:22:24
I don't hate anyone nor am I against anyone. I do question whether or not any of these candidates, McCain included, will be able keep America out of a very nasty depression. Will they end the Iraq war? Free our country from its trade agreements? Arrest nearly all of the current administration and send them to The Hague to answer for their crimes against humanity? Establish publicly financed campaigns. And there's more. These are the questions we should all be asking and demanding that these candidates answer. What we have instead is a f**k**g beauty contest. Thank you, Jason for replying to my comment.
I read the whole transcript from that night. It was posted in "Off-the-Bus" by Mayhill Flowers right here in the Huffington Post. I also listened to the tape of his comments. If this is just a "made up story" the acting was excellent. The actor sounded exactly like the Senator. But I don't suspect for a minute that this is a "made-up" story only a complete fool would. This guy is walking around with his foot stuck in a bucket of crap and all he's capable of doing is try to ignore it. It doesn't take that much courage to admit the mistake and attempt to repair the damage that was done. As I pointed out, not doing so is a sure sign of arrogance.

But I'm more concerned about you "Obamabots." You seem to have surrendered your ability to exercise critical judgment. Neither of these democrats has ever organized, managed, or administrated anything that approaches the scale of our nation. The level of experience here is totally zero. Oh, Hillary has the advantage of knowing where the bathrooms are in the white house. We will be extremely lucky if either candidate can have a successful presidency.

Oh. How did you do with my history quiz? Did you get that Warren Harding was elected simply because he looked presidential and that he was an awful president? Do you think there"s a lesson there for all of us? posted 04/16/2008 at 15:20:10
I guess I"ll just have to say this again, hopefully for the last time. I"m a working-class white male and I took umbrage at Senator Obama"s remarks. There can be no good reason for him to have insulted those of us who made our careers building and maintaining our country"s infrastructure.

I"m not sure what anyone means when they accuse him of being an "elitist" but it is apparent to me that his statement and his refusal to apologize to those he so carelessly insulted reveals and unacceptable level of arrogance. So far I"ve seen Huffington Post"s Mayhill Flowers, Senator Hillary Clinton, Senator John McCain, the main stream media, and just about anyone who was standing conveniently close by blamed for Senator Obama"s predicament and demonized for it. I"m sorry have to point out that no one put those words in his mouth. They are his, he owns them and his failure to take responsibility for them is telling.

It"s too bad that this superman who you all so vehemently believe in is not man enough to recognize the insult he"s guilty of and apologize for it.

A short history lesson:

How did Warren Harding become our 29th president?
What kind of president was he?

Here's what I heard your superman say about me and people like me. That we're nothing but Bible thumping, gun toting bigots. "They cling to guns" (gun toting) "or religion" (Bible thumping) "They have antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment" (bigot).
That's an insult to everyone who's willing to work with their hands and your superman isn't even man enough to apologize for it.

Unlike you, I'm a white working-class male. I've read Senator Obama's talk in it's entirity. Mayhill Flowers report was posted in the "Off The Bus" section of the Huffington Post.. If it's still there, you can listen to the audio of his talk.

When someone tells you that you have antipathy to people who aren't like you (them in Obama's talk) or that you hold anti-immigrant sentiment, they've just called you a bigot! clinging to our guns and our religion because were having tough times is also somewhat insulting.

The funny thing is, the only time I've used a gun was I was in the army. While I consider myself a Christian, I don't go to church very often, and I happily live live in a mult-cultural community. When I was working, I woked with working-class poeple of all races. nor was I bitter.

Confessions of an Elitist

At the time, I think, both the House and the Senate were controlled by the Republicans. Some Democrats voted along with the Republicans, but it wouldn't have mattered if they had voted against it. I think it was something like voting "present" in the Illinois legislature. posted 04/16/2008 at 01:25:17
Excuse me! When someone tells you that you have "antipathy to people who aren't like you" or that you have anti-immigrant sentiment," you've just been called a bigot! Do you elitists understand that if you continue to insult people like that it's unlikely they will vote for your man? Think of all the verbiage that Obama could save by recognizing that he's insulted a substantial portion of our population and making a heart-felt apology to them.

Then we'd be able to go to another campaign event. Chant "Yes we can" like students in a pre-kindergarten class. Write a check for $2300. And go home thinking that we've saved the world. posted 04/16/2008 at 01:17:28

People Have Every Right to Be Bitter

NightRider, Thank you for responding to my comment.

Here's what I don't get in light of the information you've just given me. Why would Obama find it necessary to refer to the "working class" as if we are racially divided; The black working class on one day, the brown working class on another, and the white working class on yet another?

As I tried to point out, all of us are losing our jobs because of the outsourcing that's been made possible by so-called "free" trade. There's a price to be paid for "free" trade and apparently those of us who have to work for a living are the ones who will pay it irrespective of our race or culture! That strikes me as a grave injustice that deserves an answer.

The main stream media has a lot of things to answer for, but this is not one of them posted 04/15/2008 at 14:11:14
No one but Obama made those comments. Neither the press nor the Obama campaign hesitates to pounce on his opponent"s misstatements and gaffes. But none of this addresses our real problem, what do we do about our failing economy? Hale shows us how bad this downturn is and gives us a terrifying look at how bad our circumstances may become.

This has come about because the American people have been virtually robbed by a class of people who can only be described as corporatists, or as Ravi Batra calls them, Acquisitors. You need to pay attention to this because all of us will be badly affected by it. What"s coming up next is going to be painful for all of us.

As for Obama, he talked about a white working class as if there were no black working class or even a brown or yellow working class, implying that the circumstances for each of these are separate and non-comparable. Yet world trade has taken all of these jobs away from American workers regardless of their race or culture. His pusillanimous refusal to address this problem head-on or even to truly understand it hardly recommends him to be our president. posted 04/15/2008 at 12:11:47

Obama: Bitterness? Anger? Yes. And for Good Reason.

How long is it going to take you guys to realize that the more you spin this the worse it looks? Barrack was talking "off script" and what he said was very revealing. As I've pointed out before, he essentially accused this nation's working class of being bible thumping and gun toting bigots. My way of saying it is nastier sounding than his actual words, but the meaning is the same and demonstrates how America"s working class is so easily dismissed.

But what he revealed about himself is even worse! He has no intention of changing the paradigm that has so disabled working people in our society. He has no intention of curing the peonage growing like a cancer beneath our very feet. He doesn"t recognize how dangerous that is to our society.

He doesn"t realize that as our education systems fail; our communities also flounder and fail, placing our very way of living in mortal danger. He doesn"t realize the damage done to our economy by "free" trade agreements because he hasn"t had to live with it and his imagination is too limited to understand what they"ve meant to that substantial portion of our population.

If you"ve liked the last seven years, then vote for Obama because he"s not very likely to change anything. posted 04/14/2008 at 10:40:08

Obama's Not Running For Sociologist-In-Chief

Just so you elitists know, there's nothing inferior in working with your hands. I've learned that without a well functioning and intelligent brain connected to them, hands can be next to worthless. Perhaps the same should be said of politicians mouths. posted 04/13/2008 at 23:52:23

I"m from the working class. While you were attending the many schools in which you received your many degrees, I was skinning my knuckles, lifting heavy loads, and electrocuting myself working for the railroad as an electrician. I"d like to inform you and Senator Obama that I have no theology, no gun, no racism, and no bitterness. I do try to rouse myself to anger when it"s appropriate.

One of the wags on the Lou Dobbs Show said that the jobs that were lost in Pennsylvania were not coming back, so get over it. But those jobs are what America most needs. Our children need to know that they don"t have to give up in high school. That a high school diploma can be an entry to a career. I had that, and I want my children to have it. I want every child in America to have it!

All too often, when I turn on my television in the morning I learn about the gang killings that occurred over the night. These kids who are being murdered could be your kids. Obama's America

There is a simple solution to this problem. All that needs to be done is this; Obama agrees to recognize the voters in those states and allow their delegates to be seated. There, wasn't that easy? Obama would probably still be ahead in the delecate count but the popular vote would be closer. All it would take is a little bit of courage. But then I guess he doesn't have that! posted 04/07/2008 at 14:08:35

If the shoe was on the other foot, wouldn't Obama be arguing that those same delegates should be seated? Of course he would! Now you know why I'll have to hold my nose when it's time to vote for either of them.
By the way, Obama was here in the SF Bay Area looking for more money. The people who were holding the event had to take three pictures of Bill Clinton down from their walls for the event. Doesn't that tell you how pathetically divided our party has become? posted 04/07/2008 at 13:44:47
Well then; maybe we should be more honest with the voters and call ourselves thefixedelectionsacrats! The voters in neither of these states had anything to do with having their primaries moved past Howard Dean's limits. Please note, none of the Democrats in either state legislature has lost their "super delegate" status. If this is "pumishment" then why aren't the persons who particated in this farce being "punished" while their electorates are?
My post and my angst is about the violation of principles and standards that we seem to set for ourselves only to violate. I not exactly happy with either of these candidates, but I maintain that if you cannot play fair, and this means doing more than just obeying the rules, it says a lot about who you are!

Democracy "
1. Government by the people, exercised either directly by the people or through elected representatives.
2. A political unit that has such a government.
3. Majority rule.
4. The principles of social equality and respect for the individual within a community.
(American Heritage, 4th Ed)

Now here we are, The Democratic Party, disenfranchising part of our own membership to the advantage of one of the candidates running for OUR nomination for the presidency.

This isn"t Howard Dean"s party, Barrack Obama"s, or even the super delegate"s party any more than it"s my party or yours and it"s also the party of those voters who"ve been disenfranchised. I"m sorry, but this idea is totally repugnant to me. We can and we must do better.

What about the principles endemic in the above definitions? Is there a man or woman more important than these are? Are the persons who made up these undemocratic rules more important than the principles we claim to stand for? Are the rules?

I"m a liberal to the point of being a Socialist and I would love to see a more liberal party, but this isn"t the way to accomplish that. All this is doing is splitting our party with fractious dialogue over two candidates who have little to distinguish themselves from one another.

But even more, if Senator Obama thinks it"s ok to disenfranchise over two million voters to win the nomination, what kind of president will he be? posted 04/07/2008 at 11:34:26

Life is filled with little mysteries such as why does the rich and powerful California Department of Education spend so much of its money on textbooks even as it lays off teachers and overcrowds its classrooms.

Why can"t the University of California use its post graduate students to create on-line material for California"s K-12 students? I"d be willing to bet they"d create that material just for having their student loans paid and the real learning experience of writing their first textbook.

One recent advancement in technology has been the development of e-readers. With these books can be downloaded to the device and read just like any book. Sony sells its readers for $300 each but if they were bought in bulk the price would be reduced. Parents could purchase them from their school districts for the lesser price.

You mention MIT"s on-line course ware. I had a difficult time watching the lectures because any time material is used in the course that is copyrighted, the screen is blanked out. These courses cry out for the full development of course material by the school using it.
]
The big advancement will happen when all of the course material is available on-line so that some students can complete their educations at home using their computer and internet access. posted 04/01/2008 at 11:19:13

I too am heartsick over the inhumanity caused by this war so we have something important in common. Deciding the best way to withdraw should up to the military commanders on the ground. The political decision lays in deciding whether withdraw from that country.
On NAFTA
It was signed in December 1992 by Canadian PM Brian Mulroney, Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Cortari, and US President George H.W. Bush under the fast-track authority. Clinton negotiated two side agreements to it, the NAAEC which addressed environmental concerns and the NAALC which addressed labor"s concerns. With these two addendums NAFTA passed the House on November 17, 1993, and the Senate on November 20, 1993.
Where was Hillary? To quote Donald Rumsfield "Who knows?" She may have meet with some women"s groups to discuss it, but there is little evidence as to whether or not she actually supported it. New York may have benefited some from NAFTA and that may have been a source for her as New York"s Jr. Senator for statements appearing to support the agreement. posted 03/28/2008 at 15:52:02

My one overriding issue is stopping the insanity this war represents. I realize that campaign promises are not always kept, but they do acknowledge that the candidate is aware of the wishes of the electorate.
I do not think that Dr. Obama is far begind me on this, but I do wish he'd be more definite and address this issue as something more than an addition to the squabbling between the campaigns. None of which enlightnes anyone. posted 03/28/2008 at 14:25:35
