Talking with Our Enemies: McCain Should Admit The Truth and Stop Attacking the Messenger

It should be remembered that McCain was instrumental in normalizing diplomatic ties with Vietnam, so he has shown streaks of moderation and good sense. Trouble is, there's no telling what he'll say from one day to the next: He'll repudiate a stance that he took in the past and deny that he's repudiating it. An awful lot like the current pResident. posted 05/17/2008 at 13:27:29

McCain Sets Timetable For Getting Out Of Iraq

So he's not proposing to "cut and run." It's more like: "Procrastinate. And then cut and run." posted 05/15/2008 at 13:12:59

Will The Next President Obliterate The Auto Industry?

Spend the hour and a half required to watch "Who Killed the Electric Car", and it will be perfectly clear that the Big 3 (or at least 1 of the 3, GM) are fully responsible for their own demise.

Ironically, American car companies would not be in the position they are now, if congress had ignored their lobbyists and had instituted sensible CAFE standards. Or--better yet--if congress had passed Bill Clinton's proposed BTU tax. posted 05/14/2008 at 17:40:28

Rumsfeld On 2006 Election: "The Correction For That...Is An Attack"

"The correction for that, I suppose, is an attack. And when that happens, then everyone gets energized . . .and it's a shame we don't have the maturity to recognize the seriousness of the threats...the lethality, the carnage, that can be imposed on our society is so real and so present and so serious that you'd think we'd be able to understand it, but as a society, the longer you get away from 9/11, the less . . ."

Amazing that this discussion took place in the context of the Democrats' reluctance to support our policy in Iraq. Newsflash to Dumsfeld: Iraq had NOTHING to do with 9/11. International terrorism has INCREASED as a result of our occupation of a Muslim country. posted 05/13/2008 at 17:13:07

Hillary's Gift to Women

As I recall, anthropologist Margaret Mead made a similar point about the potential for female aggressiveness, and for that reason she thought that women were unsuited to combat. posted 05/12/2008 at 13:45:42

Study: "Daily Show" Very Similar To "O'Reilly Factor"

"The fact that the lineup of guests is actually even surprised me," Rosenstiel said. "I thought going in that there weren't that many Republicans who would be willing to go on the show."

Didn't Rosenstiel even bother to listen to the interviews? Stewart has to be one of the best-informed and most balanced interviewers around. He obviously respects the interviewee as well as the intelligence of the audience. Second only to Bill Moyers in my estimation. posted 05/08/2008 at 20:39:57

DNC To John McCain: "Stop Whining"

"My friends, it's a direct falsification, and I'm sorry that political campaigns have to deteriorate in this fashion," McCain said.

It's entirely possible the old Alzeimher's-suffering-coot doesn't even remember what he said and genuinely believes the ad is a "direct falsification." posted 05/03/2008 at 11:01:10

McCain 100 Years Ad Appears To Have Worked

As dishonest as taking Jeremiah Wright's "goddam America" out of context, without the "qualifiers"? I don't think so.

Another question: If McBomb really does think a 100 year occupation of Iraq is OK, would that disqualify him in your mind as a viable candidate?

And another question: Has McBomb himself back-peddled from the 100 years comment, or does he still stand by it? posted 05/02/2008 at 18:30:05

Barbara Walters Admits Affair With Senator

Barbara? In a sexual relationship? Right. And Hillary dodged sniper bullets. Sorry, it's just not credible. It's probably a cynical attempt on Barbara's part to humanize her image. (If I may steal a line from the late, great Mort Sahl.) posted 05/02/2008 at 09:58:40

Wrighteous Indignation

Personally, I'm extremely saddened by Rev. Wright's perspective about himself, which I would have to term self-absorbed. He treated an attack on him--which truthfully wasn't an attack at all, but merely a sound-bite from a sermon--as an attack on the "black church".

This is sadly similar to the sentiments expressed by the likes of Falwell, Robertson and politicians like Tom DeLay who feel discriminated against and demonized because they're such devout christians. Attack them and--in their own eyes--you're attacking Jesus. posted 04/30/2008 at 13:10:23

The Coming War with Iran: It's About the Oil, Stupid

15-20 years ago, George McGovern suggested if the US invested the cost of one single aircraft carrier in PV solar collectors, solar-generated electricity would be competitive with fossil fuel generated electricity. (I'm quoting from memory. I haven't been able find the actual quote, and I would be most grateful to anybody who can locate it.)

Whether or not McGovern's assessment was correct, it certainly seems an updated version would be. If the $3T that the Iraq fiasco will cost us (i.e. some $30,000 for each US household) had been invested in installing a $30,000 array of rooftop solar collectors on 1 million homes, those homes would be able to generate enough electricity to meet all their needs and to power an electric commuting vehicle. But instead of investing in energy independence, we chose to invest in war. Wonder if that's what they teach in the Harvard MBA program? posted 04/14/2008 at 10:45:58

Ten Questions for General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker

My questions: Doesn't the fact that Iran's intervention quelled the violence in Basra suggest the presence of US troops is essentially irrelevant to the stated goal of reducing the levels of violence? Doesn't the Basra ceasefire suggest that Iraq might be able to get along just fine without us as occupiers? posted 04/08/2008 at 17:07:14

McCain: Democrats' Stance on Iraq Flawed

If we're truly achieving a state of "something approaching normal", it looks like almost all of the credit goes to Iran (rather than to the US or Iraqi army.)

This, in turn, suggests we should withdraw our troops and turn everything over to Iran--assuming, of course that we sincerely want to reduce the violence in Iraq. That is our objective, isn't it? posted 04/07/2008 at 11:54:18

Bush: Iraq Violence A Necessary Part Of Development

"There have been other defining moments up to now, but this is a defining moment, as well," Bush said.

I wonder if Bush would want to refer to it as another "birth pang of a new Middle East"?

"What we're seeing here, in a sense, is the growing -- the birth pangs of a new Middle East and whatever we do we have to be certain that we're pushing forward to the new Middle East not going back to the old one."--Condoleeza Rice, July 21, 2006 posted 03/28/2008 at 14:46:14

25% of Anti-Obama Dems Think He's a Muslim

Which raises the question for those 23 percenters: Is Obama Muslim, or did he attend Jeremiah Wright's church for 20 years? You can only guilt him for association with one or the other; but not both.

What Hillary Really Learned in the White House

"He [Bush] Lied to Congress and suckered them into authorizing the war. . ."

Which was, like, totally uncool and totally unexpected, right, Michel? Anybody who had even a passing acquaintance with Molly Ivin's writings would not have been "suckered." Is it likely HRC had never read any Ivin's? If she hadn't, she's way too uninformed to be president. But even if Hillary had never read any of Molly Ivins, all she had to do was to listen to Pete Stark's reasoning for refusing to authorize force.

"Romantic" as the notion of 100 years of war is to Bush and McCain, they better check with China first to make sure that country will be willing to continue underwrite the effort.
