Edwards is an unlikely populist but he is the only populist the Democrats have. The party will not support a populist because it has become - brace yourself - elitist. Working class whites used to be the base of the party. Bill Clinton kicked us to the curb so that the Democrats could rake in corporate contributions. Yes, southern whites bolted the party back in the day. But non-southern working class whites were kicked out of the party. The Democratic party has been imitating the Republicans for so long that a progressive agenda cannot gain a toehold. Kucinich gets no support. I guess you missed it: "But they were as anti-slave as they were anti-slavery". This is a useful lesson on regional cultural differences that account for Clinton's success. What we now call racism is a tradition not just in West Virginia but in all of Appalachia. White racism is alive and well in America, especially in Appalachia. Whats up blues cat? The Israelis created Hezabullah and Hamas. These groups are the most highly evolved and effective resistance fighters the world has seen. Iran is evolving into a formidable enemy under the constant threat of American invasion or bombardment. It is conceivable that the U.S. and Israel could lose the oil wars. Will they forgo the temptation to go nuclear? We hope so. It is my personal opinion that the U.S. and Israel should make peace with the rest of the world while they can still negotiate from a position of strength. If it were up to the people, I think most Americans would gladly give up the enterprise of empire.
