Why I Am Supporting Barack Obama

"He speaks with an eloquence that most public officials can only dream of..." You ain't too shabby yourself, Rep. Capps. Well said! And thanks. posted 04/30/2008 at 17:37:48

Obama's Reverend Wright Press Conference (VIDEO)

Sad, a Christian like Wright who doesn't know he's an egotist but thinks he's doing "God's will."

I, myself, wasn't offended by anything Wright said at either appearance. His view of Farrakhan isn't mine (and is a dated one, I suspect--black people no longer "listen" to him as a black E.F. Hutton), but nothing else of substance he said was at variance with an honest and fact-based view of Åmerican history.

Hence I think I'm somewhat to the left of Obama--but that's OK! But in reflecting on what I just said, I think it's utterly remarkable that I know, rather than having to guess, what Obama's positions are. The man is HONEST--for that reason alone I'd trade him for forty Hillary spin machines. We know Hillary Milhous Clinton will give us four more years of half-truths, lies and misstatements and will have to read the tea leaves to know her real values--much less to know what's really happening with her administration. posted 04/29/2008 at 14:50:31

Natural Nudists Unite -- And Apologize!

Dangling our modifiers, are we, Erica? "As a natural nudist, who comes from a family of natural nudists, the Miley Cyrus flap astounds me." And you a first-class writer and all. Tsk, tsk. posted 04/29/2008 at 14:02:01

Rev. Jeremiah Wright's Media Blitz Forces Barack Obama to Face the Angry Black Man Test -- Again

"But Wright's bombastic tactics will put his skills to the test, forcing the candidate to bridge one of the largest cultural chasms in America while running one of the tightest races for the Democratic nomination ever seen."
(sigh) This is true. What makes it particularly painful is that Obama is so much more than "the black candidate."
As a white person I would vote for Obama if he were merely the superior candidate among the three running. But what raises the stakes is that he's the best candidate in my lifetime--a lifetime that includes JFK and RFK. Those last were never scrutinized the way Obama has been, and they lacked his worldliness, wisdom, diplomacy. It's possible to overpraise anyone, but extraordinarily rare that a first-class mind and temperament dare to vie for the White House--and get this far.
It's like being promised a pony for Christmas, with the fallback present a pair of socks. Now, there's nothing wrong with socks, but if Barack loses over his association with Rev. Wright, it's going to hurt. We could have had the pony. posted 04/28/2008 at 16:29:31

Clinton's Battering of Obama Is Brutal, Bloody -- But Fair

Excellent point. Honesty is somehow not part of the blogger's equation, but it is a distinction that a good part of the American public now values more than ever. posted 04/28/2008 at 09:12:00

Party Leaders To Hear Florida, Michigan Delegate Challenges

"Most of the Democratic candidates had their names removed, but Clinton left hers on."

Why doesn't that surprise me? This woman would win any way she could, including driving over her grandmother. posted 04/26/2008 at 19:04:17

Arianna Discusses The Right Wing's "Lunatic Fringe" On ABC's 20/20

Weird. First time I've seen an "interviewer" pull out prepared graphs and charts! But a win, Arianna--your quick wits were more than a match for Stossel's protests and ironic inflections. Why 20/20 chose him for the interview (or for anything, for that matter) is a mystery--his primitive politics make Ron Paul look like Eugene Debs! posted 04/26/2008 at 11:08:09

Please explain why that is a virtue. posted 04/21/2008 at 14:20:21
My only question is why it took someone so long to write this article.

For at least a month, "Clinton '12" has been the 800-pound gorilla in the room. It explains everything. posted 04/21/2008 at 14:18:05

Krugman: Obama Clinging To A Stereotype

I'd like to hear a debate between Krugman and Robert Reich, another scholar who just endorsed Obama today for reasons of POLICY, not personality.

Obama's sociological comment was an answer to a question, not part of his prepared remarks. Disproving his off-the-cuff attempts to analyze why he wasn't appealing immediately to rural Pennsylvania voters is nit-picking irrelevancy, and perhaps reveals more about Krugman than about Obama. posted 04/18/2008 at 17:07:24

Joe Scarborough Walks Off MSNBC's "Race To The White House" After Exchange With Rachel Maddow

The response to Scarborough's condescending point is that McCain has recently changed his position on a host of issues. He's not the same "maverick" he was during his "25 years" in office; might as well be asked about the NEW McCain. posted 04/18/2008 at 09:15:11

I Was There: What Obama Really Said About Pennsylvania

"The response that followed sounded unscripted, in the moment, as if he were really trying to answer a question with intelligent conversation..."

One of the many facets of this remarkable man, Mr. Coleman, and so unlike a typical politician: he has the poise to think on his feet, and does his listeners the incredible favor of being real, in real time, with them. No politician in my lifetime of 65 years has been so scrutinized by the press--along with his family and childhood friends, casual acquaintances, colleagues, you name it--and yet he has emerged every bit the ideal he at first seems. Jack Kennedy got a free pass by comparison.

And if he wins the nomination, and if the country rejects him in favor of McCain, i.e., Bush III? I hate to think that could happen, but then I didn't believe a second Bush term had a chance, either. Then the answer to Benjamin Franklin's challenge, "A republic, sir, if you can keep her," would be that we couldn't, after all. And didn't deserve one. posted 04/16/2008 at 17:30:11

Here We Go Again

More and more I'm convinced that Hillary is running for 2012. She's basically conceded 2008 to Obama but hopes he'll lose. (and indeed, without the Clintons' and the Clintons' delegates' help he'll have a rough time of it)
This explains why she's still running, why she's running as McCain's surrogate and why she's willing to exploit absolutely anything that will demean Obama.
I'd love to be wrong, her behavior fits this agenda too perfectly. Time we all acknowledged it. posted 04/13/2008 at 12:56:29

Hillary W. Bush

THIS is why I read HuffPo! A blog that spreads light, is witty and well-written, articulates thoughts I'd only half-formed myself.

One footnote: "reason without faith?" Any reason that equates with selfishness is ill-defined and shallowly conceived. No man is an island, no, nor woman either. Etc., etc. Consult William Irwin Thompson. posted 04/07/2008 at 13:16:24

Not Until the Fat Lady Sings

Smart and thoughtful post, Mr. Baitz. The trouble with Hillary's continuing and progressively mean attacks on Obama, which require some modicum of response from the Obama camp, is that the press then characterizes the exchange as "infighting" by two equally mean and petty opponents. ("You kids cut that out," as Hillary knees her opponent and gouges an eye) Barack winds up guilty by association.

Only the perceptive see Hillary's low-road tactics for what they are, as distinct from Obama's necessary defensive responses.

And we know, thanks to the MSM, the American people have limited, blindered perceptions. How to trust them? posted 04/01/2008 at 09:51:15

Obama's Anger--Redux

My first year of college teaching was in Wisconsin. The chairman was German-American, his secretary Polish-American. The kidding, Polish jokes, etc. served to reflect a deeper prejudice. I was introduced to relatively "subtle" bigotry against Poles in the midwest; it seemed so ridiculously provincial to me, who had no formed opinions on Polish vs. German heritage.
Bigotry against black Americans must one day seem as provincial to us all as bigotry against Polish-Americans seemed to me then. Now in New York City, dark skin and even wide noses can mean many ethnicities, and short-cropped hair can belong to anyone. I note lately my tendency to subconsciously categorize on the basis of looks often fails. Recent waves of recent immigrants prove how silly our American construct of a biracial world.
And the young are far ahead of us old farts: too many mixed-race kids.
Obama would be such a harbinger of change in himself; fortunately he's brilliant and wise, a quick study and a take-charge personality. We'll have other women running for office, but Obama both understands our national "birth defect" (Condi Rice's term) and could be a big part of our getting beyond it. In one giant leap. posted 03/29/2008 at 09:34:38

"The View" Heats Up Over Racism, Whoopi Declares, "This Is A Racist Country"

Sociologist Andrew Hacker wrote a book ("Two Nations") about this: to wit, that in a racist country, all whites are ipso facto racist. If we think they're "inferior" to us, if we think they're "just as good as us," bingo, same thing. I think I'm enlightened, but being introspective, I've caught even myself in racist assumptions. Thinking it somehow noteworthy that "even" a black man's dog is faithful and adoring of him. Hearing the gears shift in my brain when I discover that a black man is, in fact, latino, or an African immigrant. Being around Frenchmen whose gears don't grind that way at all. Racism must affect every white person in this country, however subconsciously. posted 03/24/2008 at 20:02:51
