Obama Using Cross Flyer In Kentucky

How is this pandering if he is a Christian? Pandering is taking a position that isn't genuinely representative of what you believe or what is right just to score political points with voters. His lapel flag pin might be pandering, but his counter-balancing the Muslim rhetoric with an add demonstrating his faith is not. posted 05/14/2008 at 22:29:08
lol. Hilarious, but true. Muslm is the new "n***er." Instead of calling Obama a "n***er" and saying they won't vote for him because of his race, they say he "isn't Christian" or he is "Muslim." How odd? Especially because these are the same people who criticize him for sitting in a Christian church for 20 years. The guy just can't win with some people. posted 05/14/2008 at 22:26:52

I don't understand why everyone wants Edwards to be on the ticket as VP with Obama. Edwards was already on a ticket, 4 years ago. And he lost. Time to move on. He has done nothing to help Obama's prospects so Obama should look elsewhere when thinking about a VP. posted 05/11/2008 at 16:11:07

Olbermann: Clinton's O'Reilly Appearance "Pathetic And Revelatory"

Do you know anything about corporate taxation? A windfall tax? Major corporations are so structurally-complex that some CFOs admit to being able to pay "what they want" in taxes. And who is going to support her in Congress to enact the tax in the first place? She can't even get enough votes for the gas-tax holiday because it is contrary to a little concept in tax policy known as "tax incidence." You see, when corporations are taxed or not taxed there is no guarantee that they won't shift their burden to, or keep the benefit from, consumers.

You are so quick to denigrate another poster because they are "probably an Obama supporter." In reality, you probably should just take a look in the mirror. posted 05/02/2008 at 21:48:48

North Carolina Polls: Democratic Primary

The holding/dictum analogy is erroneous. The article was provided as specific evidence of Black voters feeling "forgotten." In fact, I specifically urged doubters to do a google search for their own evidence. I never cited this article as directly supporting my proposition. I simply cited it as an example of how this phenomenon has gotten some attention in the media (see the words "here is 'a' Times article" not here is 'the' Times article).

Now, you say the youth and Black votes do not need to be reenergized, but where is your evidence to support that proposition? posted 05/01/2008 at 11:25:58
I think you make a great point. I think we constituents are just so excited about him that are getting a little selfish. The unfortunate thing is that this could have a real affect on turnout. I personally think he is doing a great job of courting new voters, but every once in a while he has to let his base know that he hasn't forgotten about us or taken us for granted.

I also agree that he will be fine. Even if he loses both contests on May 6, he will still probably be the nominee. No one is expecting him to pull out two wins after all of the Rev Wright drama. But if he somehow wins both state, the game is over---Hilary has to concede defeat. I'm just hoping that Black voters and youth voters will show up regardless. I do worry though because of the nefarious goings-on with the Robocalls and voter ID laws. I guess we'll see how it all plays out. posted 05/01/2008 at 11:10:59
I promise, i am a diehard Obama fan. Do you know how to do a google search? You should try it. I'm not making this stuff up. As I said below, I am not trying to say Obama shouldn't care about white votes/ Regan Dems, all I am saying is that Black and Youth voters need to be reenergized by his presence where they live (i.e. college towns and urban areas).

Trust me, as a young black man at an Ivy League law school, I know how to read quite well. When was the last time Obama did an event in an urban area? The night before the Penn primary he was in the suburbs and Clinton was in the urban area. Even Obama said he believes he needs to go where he is "weak." These are facts. Just do a quick google search and you'll see. posted 05/01/2008 at 10:53:50
Funny thing is yes, I am both young (just turned 27) and Black. lol I live in both of these worlds simultaneously (being a law school student and an active member of the Black community). I am not trying to say that Obama should forget about white voters, all I'm saying is that he needs to show up in the urban areas and college towns if he wants to reenergize Black and youth voters. Just do a google search if you don't believe me. This has been written about extensively (see Pennsylvania).

Obama needs to court Black voters and the Youth vote again. He hasn't done it in a long time and a lot of folks are getting frustrated because he is spending all of his time trying to woo the Regan Democrats who probably will not vote for him anyway. What a shame. He is completely off of his game. If he gets 25% of the Regan Democrats' votes he might lose a host of Black/Youth vote because they are losing steam and may not show up to vote. posted 05/01/2008 at 10:07:05

Will African Americans Return?

THANK YOU!!! What an insightful and honest article. The problem as Ralph Ellison once aptly described is that Black folks, Black voters, have become the "Invisible Man" of the Democratic base. But here is the reality: there are a lot of Black people ready to organize and boycott the Democratic party if the nomination is stolen from Barack Obama. If Hilary wins pledged delegates, like the rules demand, I honestly believe that Black folks will support her. But if she manipulates the system to swipe what is rightfully his, I assure you Black folks will have a serious problem with the Democratic Party. I personally am encouraging people to write in Obama's name if she steals the nomination. There are folks who are worried about riots, etc. Don't fret! Black folks aren't going to riot. Not this time. Black folks will use their political power to show the Democratic party what an unhappy constituency can do.

How ironic. The only consistent constituency of the Democratic party since the mid-1960s is now being supplanted by the "Regan" Democrats--folks who are Republicans but "might" consider voting for the Democrats. Hilary might win the battle for white working class Americans against Obama, but she will lose the war against McCain without the support of the African American constituency. posted 04/29/2008 at 00:36:27

McCain Blames Obama For Rev. Wright Issue

This is the exact nonsense that Rev Wright tried to combat in his speech. You take two quotes completely out of context and try to frame and narrate his speech. First, he was quoting the statistics of the day from a study done in the 1970s. Second, if you are offended by the "mockery" it is because you are not open-minded enough to see that Rev Wright made jokes about every race, not in a condescending way, but in an effort to show how our differences are not "deficiencies" but simply differences---sometimes funny ones. posted 04/27/2008 at 20:55:09

If Obama reached out to some Republicans to be in his cabinet, stood firm in his response to whatever the flap/gaffe of the day is, and took on an issue head-on in the Senate from here on out---I think Hilary would have to shut up and drop out of the race because he would undercut all of the arguments that she makes against him. posted 04/26/2008 at 23:41:23

EXACTLY. Do people know what happens when things are in high demand? Uh, prices skyrocket. Now could you imagine if a good (e.g. Healthcare) was mandatory. Oh man. Insurance companies are going to be looking out for their own bottom-lines. By insuring people they otherwise would not have (e.g. pre-existing conditions, sick, etc) they will spread the risk of covering medical costs to people who ordinarily would have low policy rates (i.e. healthy folks), thus driving up the rates/premiums/co-pays you name it. Mandating the Purchase of Health Insurance IS NOT UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE. If the government were to provide all Americans with health care, that would be a form of universal health care. Forcing people to buy health insurance is universal profits for all insurance companies. posted 04/10/2008 at 13:25:09

Flashback: Wright's Letter To NYT About Obama

I find it simply amazing that Jewish people are afforded protection against anything that might be interpreted as "anti-Jew" or "anti-Israel." No one ever tells Jewish people that what happened was in the "past" or their ancestors had nothing to do with it. Moreover, Jewish people consistently point to the past as a justification for why there must be some protections afforded against anti-Semitism.

While I completely agree that Jewish people are a protected class, in the sense that they have experienced genocide unique to only a few religious/cultural/racial groups. However, I never understand why Jewish people are so anti-Black, especially on issues about social policy and/or redress. The same people who look to history for their own cultural identity and are afforded special societal protection because of that history are the first people to chastize Black people to "get over it." Neither groups should get over it; instead, both groups should recognize their similar history of oppression and genocide and work together for racial/cultural/religious reconciliation. posted 03/28/2008 at 13:12:30

Pastor Of Clinton's Former Church: Don't Use Wright To Polarize

I don't think we will ever make progress toward racial reconciliation by using the term "racist" so waywardly. I'd prefer that we use this opportunity to hear from each other and try to be reasonable in understanding perspectives that are different from our own. Black people might feel like whites who flipped out about Rev. Wright are really just covert racists who were looking for a reason to not support the Black candidate. But then Whites have an equal right to call Blacks who listen to the gospel of Black Liberation Theology for being racists for supporting a message that is arguably separatist. Here is what I propose, forget the term "racist" for the purpose of this conversation. Instead try to empathize with both sides and work toward a point where gut-reaction ("unconscious prejudices and stereotypes") doesn't automatically trump reason and logic in the discussion about racial relations in America. posted 03/26/2008 at 00:01:17
