Obama's Struggle With Typical Liberal Hypocrisy

"Conservatives are, of course, not a hair less bigoted in their hearts (nor are Independents or anyone else for that matter). But unlike Democrats, Republicans have found a way to play nicely with the ideologically aligned, regardless of the color of their skin."
Really!
Can you give us some examples like...how many African Americans are elected members of the GOP? How about the racist tilt of McCains campaign, fluctuating between him being a Muslim and an angry African American.
How about the cute little t-shirt being sold in W.Virginia by a Republican.
How about Huckabee's little joke today about some one pulling a gun on Obama?
I just don't get where you are coming from with this article. posted 05/16/2008 at 19:25:43

Hillary Should Stay in Because She Can

You know what Peggy, she can stay.
But in case you have not noticed we are now into a general election.
It started in dead earnest when Bush opened his mouth and made that outrageous comment today in Israel, quickly parroted by McCain and Lieberman.
Can she stay? Yes
But that is not the question. Should she stay, given the circumstances, the need for the party to move on unhampered and without diversion? That is the question.
What is needed is all Democratic hands on deck including Hillary's!
What happened to day was significant.
And a seasoned hand like Hillary Clinton will know that. posted 05/16/2008 at 01:11:54

Obama Islam Smear Changes Stripes

Well you are right of course, Ali but consider the writer, it is not the first time that he has gone after immigrants.
Although dismissed as false and racially divisive, by scholars and others, he blamed the LA riots, on 'immigrants', after the Rodney King court fiasco in which all of the police involved were acquitted. At that time his target was Hispanics. He tried to stoke the racial tension between Hispanics and African Americans.
He is typical of the right-wing in this country and the supporters of the Likud party in Israel.
They have no cause to want Obama in the Presidency, particularly given his expressed concerns about the Likud and the fact that he is willing to reach out and 'talk' to all.
Facilitated by the NYTimes, he delivers the same rationale (complete with deliberate perversions of the truth) that the right-wing, Likud supporters like Daniel Pipes has been using, trying to kill support for Obama among American Jews.
He is what he is, a right wing, nasty piece of work.
The blame and sum of all my disgust lies with the NY Times that enabled him in this smear job on Obama and Muslims. posted 05/13/2008 at 00:51:33

Obama Sees Finish Line, Clinton Clings To Dwindling Support

What nonsense!
He has an intelligent, articulate wife, confident in who she is as a person and with that rare quality we seldom see in political wives, she is candid, forthright and very funny.
While most political novices are cut some slack in campaigns that was never afforded to Michelle Obama. All this nonsense about her having a chip on her shoulder is manufactured by others who parse and spin everything she says taking it out of context to create the spin that she is an 'angry black woman.' Using her thesis from her early 20's was the most specious attempt of them all.
So what do you got? One comment where she left out the word 'really' though it appeared in the same speech on the same day. Her disquiet with Hillary's approach and an old thesis.
Oddly, I don't see anyone standing up and saying Bill Clinton is an 'angry white man', even when he goes off on his fingering wagging, red faced rants?
Equally if one is going to parse the words from an old thesis should not the same be applied to Hillary Clinton? Her thesis from her days in Wellesley was hardly flattering to the woman of today.
The truth is, it is all nonsense. The pressures and rigors of a campaign is mind numbing, so they all should be cut some slack. posted 05/08/2008 at 08:54:27

Big Rewards Await Clinton If She Ends Campaign Now

Are you kidding me, what is wrong with everyone today, seems like everyone has lost their memory!
First some one, forgetting Bill had been disbarred suggested he should go to the Supremes, now HIllary?
Hillary failed the bar exam when she left Yale. She finally passed it in Arkansa. But the point is what experience does she have in law? Think about it, she has very little experience, in fact. Hillary like Bill has spent the majority of her life as a professional politician, it is all they know.
The Supreme Court is too important to our country to mess around with half trained people who have spent their lives or doing political favors!
So lets not go off half cocked here the object after all is to bring change to our country and improve the lives of people. You don't mess with the Supreme Court. posted 05/07/2008 at 21:15:09

Working Class Elitists

Good for you, its about time someone called this crap - CRAP!! I grew up working class, my parents were the fairest, most honest people you could find. They never dumped on anyone, they worked hard, worried about their kids and helped others if they needed help.
It was a small town community.
Somehow in this insidious spin by both Clinton and the media all 'working class' got identified as 'white'!
No people of color were included and I think that is insulting.
But forgive me my indulgence here, but as a 'white' from a working class family it is just as insulting to many wonderful people out there, who are nothing like the 'working class' being described who happen to be white.
The other thing people forget is that the majority of the 'working class' is in fact the middle class of America.
I hold the media to blame for this and am amazed more people did not lash out at the unfairness to all people of all races in this ugly divisive generality employed by so many in the media. posted 05/07/2008 at 21:34:57

George McGovern Switches To Obama, Urges Clinton To Drop Out

I have no problem with Hillary staying on if that is what she wants.
She cannot do any more harm that she already has to Sen. Obama or the Democratic party except waste more precious time.
There is nothing different in the circumstances now than there was before.
She could not catch him before and knew that, she can't catch him now and knows that.
It was all an exercise in her blind ambition, employing every GOP tactic she could against a fellow Democrat.
But Sen. Obama can now turn all of his attention on to McCain, even if she stays in.
She can snarl all she wants, but she is now a toothless tiger. So let her stay or let her go,
but here is where I draw the line as a former Hillary turned Obama supporter who has donated the max to his cause.
Hillary is now going to lay all of her accumulated debt, including her personal contribution of approx. 11.5 million at Obama's door to be paid off plus what ever other favors she may want. That will be the price to get her out of the race.
Talk about adding insult to injury!
Let her stay but let her pay her own campaign debts! posted 05/07/2008 at 13:28:19

Obama's Clinton Dilemma

Hello?
What on earth are you talking about?
The Clinton's are the one's with the most to lose if they do not get behind Obama in a very meaningful way! Failing to do so, will leave them with a lasting black mark on the Clinton legacy, reduce their influence significantly PLUS have the potential to impact them financially because they have both traded on their name and contacts to make money. Remember the 119 Million?
They are owed nothing, the party is owned everything.
By the way, a job on the supremes? Are you kidding?
Bill Clinton is a disbarred lawyer!
Not a good qualification for a seat among the supremes! posted 05/07/2008 at 13:40:16

Paul Krugman: Obama Ad Distorts My Column, He Should Retract It

I have always been a huge fan of Krugman. I bought his books and regularly read his columns.
I don't read him now and cannot be bothered to purchase his newest book.
I don't know if it is just that he is a Hillary fan, though he has certainly given her a free ride even finding neutral ground for her silly 'summer tax' pandering. I mean really, coming from the sharp tongued Krugman, who does not suffer fools well, what kind of economic analysis makes a claim that Hillary's pandering was 'pointless but not evil'?
Perhaps it is Obama's interest and association with bright young economists getting a lot of praise and attention for a new approach to economic analysis in what is called "New Social Economics".
They certainly have taken economic analysis to a whole new level, beyond the more traditional approach and training of the likes of Krugman and stolen a bit of his thunder.
What ever it is, the accumulative effect of his consistent and selective attacks on Sen. Obama come off to me as being personal. The extent to which Krugman goes out of his way to go after him, never giving him credit, (even when some of Obama's policies reflect his own thinking) and the nasty air of contempt he injects into it, is beneath what I would expect from Krugman. From my perspective that taints him and simply makes him unreliable and not someone I can be bothered to read anymore. posted 05/06/2008 at 10:37:24

Clinton Camp Says It Will Use The Nuclear Option

The story misses one other large hurdle for the Clinton camp. Florida had a measure on the ballot that brought out home owners, once you are there it is easy to decide to plunk down a vote as well.
But as a consequence there are thousands of people, many of them minorities who did not go to the polls with the understanding their vote would not count. The same problem, in addition to the other complication of no names on the ballot except Hillary's, exists in Michigan. There are thousands of people who did not vote based on their rightful understanding their vote would not be counted.
What the Clinton spinners want us to believe is that these people are going to quietly stand back and be disenfranchised to her benefit.
I don't think so!
This is the nightmare from hell waiting to happen if the Clinton's try it on. posted 05/05/2008 at 13:39:52

Clinton Gas Tax Holiday: Hillary Attacks Economists

What is most concerning about Hillary Clinton is her inability or unwillingness to ever back down, admit a mistake or respond to criticism without attack.
She cannot resist political gamesmanship even when facing questions that have serious implications for our country, she wings it hoping to score points rather than showing reasoned judgment.
No candidate is forced to answer a hypothetical question, they can simply sluff it off, but not Hillary, she has to score points.
Her thoughtless, foolish response to a hypothetical question from the equally foolish ABC moderates is a perfect example. She could have re-framed it, to reflect the reality of our own intelligence estimates showing that Iran has no nuclear weapons and are not building any, without weakening our traditional support for Israel.
Not only did this candidate 'who would be President' suggest she would obliterate Iran, but she suggested without any thought of the implications, that we should expand our traditional protection of Israel to include more states in the middle east.
She is constantly changing positions and mirroring different personalities. It leaves you to wonder over how stable she is, how sincere she is and what kind of control she would exercise as a leader.
Trying to figure her out you are left with a choice between lesser evils; is she saying anything doing anything to get elected but does not mean it? or Is she really that hawkish and lacking in thoughtful judgment? Not a good choice by any standard. posted 05/04/2008 at 13:30:18

Rove's Next Trick -- If Obama Must Answer For His Minister Now, Just Wait to See What the Republicans Will Do To Clinton Inc. in October

You have it exactly right Frank!
The conservative bouquets for Hillary, goes hand in hand with the new GOP twist (in line with the Clinton spin, I might add) on how they are 'really looking forward to running against Obama.' It is all bull!
What delights me as a seasoned Democrat who has fought the good fight, is that I know everything they could use on him, has already been run and this is all they got!
With a weak candidate like McBush with his pandora box just waiting to be opened, they desperately need Hillary! With all the insider sin's she shares in common with McCain, plus the Clinton lifestyle for the unraveling, she is the only one that can make McCain look like the lesser of two evils,
Hillary is the only hope for the GOP and they know it!
I remember the Clinton's and their tactics, too well! If they can't bring Obama down, no one can!
People need to remember that she has gotten a free ride from Obama as a fellow Democrat but the GOP will not be so restrained. They will connect all the dots, the Clinton Library donors, the business associations, the money and on and on! What we have seen is only a glimpse of the ice berg! She is our Titanic if by some unlucky twist she becomes the nominee. posted 05/05/2008 at 13:24:05

Superdelegates Must Tell Color of Change What it Can Do With its Silly Vote for Obama Petition

I am so sick of this Florida spin. People want to forget that at the same time as the vote there was an important measure on the ballot that affected home owners which was cause enough to bring them out. That in itself invalidates any claim by Clinton or anyone else that 'Florida Democrats' let their wishes be known and thus should be counted. What about all the people in Florida, not home owners but democrats just the same, who stayed home knowing their vote would not count and had no other reason to be at the polls? Do their votes get to be decided by the homeowners?
What about the 700,000 in Michigan who did not go to the polls knowing their vote would not count?
Enough of this nonsense.
As for the rest of your spin Mr. Hutchinson, Color of Change does not purport to represent all African Americans as you well know. The fact that they do not represent everyone does not and should not preclude them from voicing their concerns. I suggest you take a close look at recent date by Jay Cost that clearly shows enough support decline among African Americans for Clinton that is might well be a serious issue. Any chance your constant anti-Obama rants usually based on the trivial, is based more on competitiveness rather than political inclinations? Get over it. posted 05/03/2008 at 21:28:17

"But what she has already, and decisively, won has been a victory for all Americans, male and female, of all races, young and old:...."
The campaign of Hillary Clinton has created and capitalized on racial divisions, class divisions and certainly contributed to a considerable divide in the women's movement itself.
That is the legacy of THIS woman, not what might have been with a different woman.
I am one of those women who will not support Hillary Clinton just because she is a woman.
I am also one of those women who does not attribute the motives of others, who refuse to support Clinton as being sexist.
I am a 60 yr. old white woman and I am convinced that many women of my age, have failed to keep pace with the times and expectations of those women younger than ourselves in the womens movement. I also think we have always had a huge divide in the movement between women of visible minorities and the general leadership of the movement.
Hillary Clinton's candidacy albeit not intended, has had a positive affect in shedding light on these very divides and yes, even the failings within our movement. his is a much bigger question about problems within our own movement, including our own failures than a simple posted 05/04/2008 at 13:58:04

We have to get angry over 'say anything, do anything' style politics coupled with irrelevant, petty diversions. We have to let politicians, all of them, not just those running for office today, that we have had enough of this.

You have got to be kidding me. How could Gates think we are so stupid to be taken in by what is obviously a blatant fabrication. That is either right out of the 'lie at any cost playbook' crafted by Rumsfeld and Cheney or he is really as dumb as McCain who does not seem to understand the differences between Shite (Iran) and Sunni (Al Qaeda) who are backing the Taliban.
"Still, he said Iran continues to back the Taliban in Afghanistan.
"I do not have a sense at this point of a significant increase in Iranian support for the Taliban and others opposing the government in Afghanistan," Gates said. "There is, as best I can tell, a continuing flow, but I would still characterize it as relatively modest."
Not only does he contradict the US generals but also the Canadian, British, Dutch and other forces in Afghanistan.
The truth is Iran opposed the Taliban, assisted those fighting against them prior to the invasion then assisted the US and other forces with refugees, etc. when they invaded Afghanistan.

Obama's Reverend Wright Press Conference (VIDEO)

I would not be betting on that, by the look on Obama's face and the tone of his voice I think his time with Rev. Wright is over! Wright showed an ego-centric side of himself which as Obama pointed out showed no regard for him or his campaign.
Wright played the buffoon both at the NAACP and in front of the Press Club. He said that Obama was a 'politician doing what politicians do.' Essentially saying Obama was lying when he distanced himself from Wright's earlier comments although refusing to disown him as his friend.
Obama should feel betrayed, because he was!
It's a pity because I don't think people like Obama make these kind of decisions lightly. posted 04/29/2008 at 23:46:43
Get a grip! Does a friend behave as Wright did? Does a friend imply his friend was only playing politics when he made his speech on race? Does a friend call you 'just a politician' doing what politician's do? Wright threw him under the bus, after Obama graciously refused to do the same to him, even in the face of some purely ridiculous statements by Wright such as 'the government created the AIDS virus to kill blacks and gay people. '
Does your friend come out in the middle of a campaign after you have already been crapped on, not over his statements, but yours, and play the buffoon in front of the National Press?
If Wright had just done the Bill Moyer show and stopped there, it would have been fine.
He would have won a lot of respect but he didn't.
If you have not seen him in front at the National Press Club or at the NAACP I suggest you watche those before you jump to any conclusions about who has been a loyal friend here. posted 04/29/2008 at 23:35:05

Hillary Is Not A Monster

An excellent article. Setting aside the issue of Hillary Clinton, I think you do a great service about talking about the issue of 'fear' how it has been used, how it is being used and what it does to our perspective.
I would love to see you write more about this subject, expanding the view beyond 'fear' mongering for political purposes to include more information on threat assessment, how it works, how it impacts our policies and foreign relations.
I think it is a critical area for American people to understand because with that comes the ability to battle fear, not be taken in and not have to rely on blind faith. posted 04/26/2008 at 15:51:23

What nut bush did you fall out of?
" But the gaping racial rift between white Democrats and black Democrats in the vote there on Clinton and Obama is an inferential sign that Wright may have been on the minds of more than a few white voters."
Let me see if I have this correct? The folks in Pennsylvania and Kentucky who say they will never vote for a black man, are only kidding, really they are just upset about Rev. Wright! Right?
The 150, 000 republicans who 'changed' parties with the vast majority going to Hillary, had no significance either, right? They are all just upset about Rev. Wright?
If none of these folks are racist or have racist tendency why is the Rev. Wright such a golden opportunity, who exactly would that be appealing to?
I am only interested in informed opinion, so if you were too lazy to listen to his sermon's to determine if they were taken out of context, don't bother me with your 'alleged out of context' spin.

Media Jump Ship From Obama To Clinton

Based on Clinton talking points, the media portrayed this race as close when it was not. Now they are using the same Clinton talking points to try and sabotage his election.
I don't think it is a shift, on average they have been pretty harsh with Obama, singling him out from other candidates for 'guilt by association' based more on his color than any real tangible issue.
Although they recognized the potential impact on Obama, not one person in the main stream media or cable took an in-depth look at Wright. Not one!
Not one person in the main stream media expressed any concern over the abuse & threats leveled at Trinity Church and its members because of it. No one cared!
The main steam media & cable news treated the African American community like they were invisible as they spun the Wright story as a race issue & ridiculously tried to link Obama to Farrakan when there was no connection. Clinton, McCain, Bush, etal all had connections to controversial pastors or church leaders and still do.
On the whole I think American people are ready & willing to elect an African American but I am not convinced that the main stream media is, so they hide behind this manufactured gibberish provided courtesy of Clinton.

Was Race a Strong Factor in Clear Clinton Win in Pennsylvania?

RichLiberal you need a history lesson!
Sad to say it was the Republicans who started the fight for civil rights legislation, including desegregation & voting rights, which brought us the history of the Dixie Democrats and Jim Crowe!
It was the Dixie Democrats who fought it tooth and nail.
You seem to be suggesting that African Americans are beholden to the Democratic party without recognizing their significant role in the Democratic election of Kennedy, etal. Bill Clinton's path to the white house was paved by AA support which may in part explain their pain and anger at what they see as race baiting by the Clinton camp. Before you start insulting Sen. Obama and the AA community, do the math - without the African American community the Democrats cannot win a general election!
No one underestimates the contributions of the Kennedy's, Johnston or the great many others who stood up for civil rights, including against some of those within there own party. But it is pure foolishness to suggest that we do not have racists within our own party.
You misunderstand what racism is if you think the African American vote for Obama is racist.
They are not voting for Obama because Hillary is white. Many prominent African Americans are still supporting HIllary. Like the women supporting Clinton, perhaps African American's too are voting over a sense of identification and connection to the message of a candidate. posted 04/23/2008 at 03:32:03

Also her willingness to do anything and say anything to get elected. The Clinton, 'us first', blind ambition. We have seen this before.
Some of us were there in the Clinton years slugging it out trying to save the house democrats. Outrageous Clinton antics lost many of them their seats, but he survived to become a lame duck President with a Republican controlled congress. Now that's what the country needed, right?

Obama Improving Among Whites And Seniors, Holding Among Jews

Good point Carol. White men may decide the primary but the math in a general election shows that if the AA community does not turn out or does not vote Democrat, for any reason, the Democrats will lose!
Sadly, the African American community has been much abused in the process of this race, with more to come, I am sure. You will have both the Clinton's and Republicans playing the race card and appealing to racists, at every turn. But Bill and Hillary Clinton think they can come back and fix it all, with the African American community. There arrogance is such that they really believe the AA community will welcome them with open arms, if they are successful in dispatching Obama.
Time will tell, but what we do know is that the next few weeks are going to be very ugly and could be very hard on African Americans people who thought better of the Clinton's and the Democratic party. posted 04/23/2008 at 02:34:30

Despite the Clinton influence and name in Pennsylvania he did the right thing by challenging them and making them earn it.
As for Clinton it will be more of the same, the kitchen sink, the race card and tag teaming with John McCain. Now news out of North Carolina is that Republican heavy weights are stepping in to try and pile on with some swift boat stuff. It tells me they are scared of facing Obama in an election and would rather have Clinton whom they are sure they can beat.

Citizen Journalism: Can We Trust it?

I agree with the writer but would go further in examining the potential impact & problems associated with citizen journalism. I speak specifically to the credibility issue that 'citizen journalism' may present to the important contribution that online journalism is finally beginning to provide. As a retired print journalist, editor and publisher who wrestled with all the issues, I understand the appeal both economically and in terms of reach. I even think there is a place for them, but not in hard news coverage.
Using citizen journalist to cover hard news is a slippery slope for those developing alternative voices beginning to coalesce on the internet above the chaotic fringe.
It was not "journalists" who failed the American people, it was specifically mainstream media journalism. Credible journalists & writers from across this country spoke eloquently to the issues but could not break the access barriers to be heard.
As computer reliance grows, internet sites are starting to provide strong alternative voices. But is it strong enough yet to break the artificial partisan divide that has re-framed the debate in main stream media? Not quite yet, is my view.
Restoring the 'middle ground' on hard news issues is critical to restoring diversity. It requires superior skill & intelligent design. It is no place for amateurs.
Missed in the debate over the Fowler piece was the issue of "credibility" & "vetting" being raised, drowned out by the 'for or against' Obama voices.
I would be taking that issue to heart. posted 04/18/2008 at 14:14:59

The Case for Vice President Clinton

Sorry, real my earlier post, I meant to say more liberal republicans. posted 04/21/2008 at 23:16:49
Lets get real here, there are even more out there in the general electorate who would not vote for a ticket with a Clinton on it! Have you failed to notice the polls showing her ever increasing negatives?
Further, those Hillary supporters committed to the country and to ending this war will vote democratic after the heat of the primary is long gone, so don't get wrapped up in the buzz saw claims of the moment.
Those who will not, would probably not be willing to vote for a black man any way. Don't forget the racist wing of our party (and yes we do have them and have always had them) is also part of whom Hillary appeals too.
She has done enough damage to the party with her conduct lets now have her damage our chances at election by putting her on a ticket. She would only hamper Obama and whom ever the future vice-president choice might be to attract independents and more liberal democrats. posted 04/21/2008 at 23:15:04

The Uncharted: From Off The Bus to Meet the Press

Give me a break Mr. Rosen you need to make up your mind or get your story straight!
You claim you anticipated the furor it might cause, while the editor of Off the Bus, Marc Cooper claimed he could not anticipate the reaction the article would cause in his blog. Why you all seem to feel the need to point out that you are Obama supporters is a mystery to me. Does that somehow give you special license?
Huffington Post seems to be creating a careful wall so that no critical analysis of Ms. Fowler's article and HP's editorial decisions get through while you & Cooper expound on 'how justified' ,'how ethical and honest' this piece was.
Albeit retired I am a former journalist, editor and publisher with extensive experience in marketing. My comments are not lacking in civility or reason BUT for the first time on Huffington Post my comments in regard to this very issue have been cut - 3 times!
It seems to me Huffington Post wants it both ways, you want us to believe that as serious journalists, cognizant of ethical standards you carefully reviewed Ms. Fowler's article and amazingly found it both truthful and ethical! But then you seem to be arguing that this 'citizen journalism' you have initiated is creating a 'new' frontier that somehow blurs the lines.
It is not new Mr. Rosen it is called paparazzi! posted 04/14/2008 at 16:21:17

Well that might have been interesting, if it were not so fundamentally dishonest. First he never endorsed Regan nor does he, nor ever has he supported his policy, he made a historically correct comment about Regan changing the fundamental trajectory of this country. That was neither a judgment for good or for bad, it was a simple fact within a political discussion with a media person in regard to changes in American politics over the past several decades.
While you comment on peoples 'hatred' of Hillary you spew quite a bit yourself toward Sen. Obama even calling upon Pat Buchanan of all people to support that hatred and anger! posted 04/12/2008 at 22:35:40

This is the headline on this story?
Not to mention totally gonzo, it is also more than a little misleading!
What we have is Joyner's personal musings, contradicting Tavis Smiley's stated reason for leaving his radio show?

Obama: I Would Have Fired Mark Penn

Thanks Chulanow, for giving me the opportunity to point out the difference between HRC and Obama on free trade & their surrogates stated involvement.
Surrogates not withstanding, HRC's own records now show that she told a bald faced lie in Ohio about her White House role on NAFTA! Sadly for the voters of Ohio that state has just taken another hit because of NAFTA with jobs going to Mexico!
How could you possibly compare a 45 min. conversation that Obama adviser, Goolsbee had with the tiny Can. consulate in Chicago (at their invitation) with Mark Penn's Columbian trade deal association?
BOTH camps were reported to have contacted the Canadian government & both camps have been exonerated by the Canadian government. There was no reason for Obama to fire Goolsbee, he did nothing wrong!
Compare that to the Columbian free trade deal!!
Bill Clinton & the companies associated with Mark Penn & Howard Wolfson (until he took leave to campaign) were all in the PAY of either Pro-Columbian Trade Agreement interests or the Columbian government!
It wasn't a 45 min. chit chat! posted 04/11/2008 at 13:49:34

Let me enlighten you, Ms. Fowler surreptitiously recorded what was essentially a private conversation, in a private home ( and it was a conversation between several people and Sen. Obama, not a stump speech ) to which the press were not invited! Ms. Fowler is not a professional journalist, but I probably don't need to tell you that, and this site is being carefully edited of comment that challenges Ms. Fowler and the conduct of Huffington Post.
Although she has the audacity to now bill it as an 'exclusive' (a change from the previous headline) which may make it look to the casual observer that it was a meeting to which Ms. Fowler was invited, that is not the case.
Is it ethical? You be the judge!

Chris Matthews' Explosive Profile: Forced To Apologize To Clinton, Wants To Be Russert, Afraid Of Being Kidnapped

I really like Chris Matthews, warts and all. The very fact that he does not come off as 'canned' really appeals to me, he shows genuine emotion & a real passion for politics. I also really liked Tucker Carlson for the same reasons. I never agreed with him but I liked his style and personality. Although his showmanship is a bit 'too canned' at times, I don't mind Olberman but I have little time for Gregory or Abrams. But when ever Russert or Pat Buchanan comes on, I switch the channel immediately. If they are not racists they are certainly old white men entrenched in stereo types of African Americans. So as an 'old white woman' who thinks racist stereo-typing harms our country I refuse to tolerate it by giving them the benefit of adding to their viewer numbers.
Making Mathews apologize over a truthful Clinton observation while MSNBC continues to support the likes of Russert & Buchanan raises serious questions about MSNBC for me. I think Russert is an arrogant insider & I think he has a very nasty streak in him. His race based gamesmanship during the debates was too much for me! Russert is enough of an insider to know the question over Farakkan would unfairly taint Obama which is exactly what it did. Watching him brag about it after the fact, was disgusting. MSNBC has already lost a huge chunk of my viewing so if they lose Mathews they lose it all. posted 04/09/2008 at 10:40:37

Obama Risks Alienating Clinton Women and Blue-Collar Supporters

I am not sure what the point of this article is, it seems to me you put him in a 'damned if he does and damned if he doesn't position.
I am not sure why Clinton supporters would view Obama's comments as condescending when taken in the full context of a question he was asked in regard to Sen. Leahy's comments.
"Obama yesterday said that Sen. Patrick Leahy's call for Clinton to leave the race was premature, declaring that Clinton had a right to stay in the race as long as she wanted. (MSNBC)
Responding specifically to the Leahy question Obama went on to say : "My attitude is that Sen. Clinton can run as long as she wants. Her name is on the ballot. And she is a fierce and formidable competitor, and she obviously believes that she would make the best nominee and the best opponent," he said. "I think that you know she should be able to compete and her supporters should be able to support her for as long as they are willing or able."
Would someone please explain to this 59 yr, old white woman and ardent feminist why that comment would be viewed as condescending? posted 04/02/2008 at 15:40:30

Slavery Is No Relic

You are right, becoming a 'survivor' and moving beyond victimization, is an important step to personal freedom. I respectfully suggest that your selective history is not helpful to those trying to get beyond victimization.
There were many in the slave trade; Arab, European & as you rightfully note, competing African nations. How does one weigh the sin of one against the sin of another, the difference between the buyer and the seller?
Just as location & skin color does not predict the humanity or lack of it among people, nor does it make a Nation!
Africa is a country of many Nations as is Europe, Asia etc all of whom have at times victimized the other out of enmity or the pursuit of power or advantage.
The key to becoming a survivor is not about absolving anyone of their actions, it is about refusing to be enslaved any longer to the experience.
Somewhat like the rape victim it is about getting past the inner destruction of self worth that often accompanies the experience when the will of one, over the will of another, robs a person of choice & freedom.
The challenge of the victim, any victim, is getting past the very real damage to the psyche & that is no easy task to be taken lightly.
So what does it do to those struggling to find empowerment when you wrongly suggest, it was our 'family' that sold us out? Is that not the equivalent of saying it IS their posted 04/01/2008 at 17:17:44

Could the Republicans Pick the Democratic Nominee? -- The Untold Story of How the GOP Rigged Florida and Michigan

I think the Nation Institute Investigative Fund was misused in the case of this charade posing as an 'investigative' article.
If in fact there was any real investigation, it was selective at best. Even if the GOP did toy with the choice of primary dates, (just like they are toying with the Democratic primary by 'plunking' Republican votes for Hillary,) what does that have to do with Obama?
Obama agreed to support what ever the DNC supported & the DNC has indicated it would recognize new contests in both Florida and Michigan. The fact that both states have failed to come up with an option has nothing to do with Obama, who clearly sees this as a matter between the State & the DNC.
On the other hand, Clinton refused to support a caucus even though they are a much cheaper alternative. Pandering to Clinton, Gov. Jennifer Granholm, a Clinton super delegate, offered a 'firehouse primary' as an alternative. A firehouse primary is essentially a drop off vote at a few select locations but it is run and staffed by the state democratic party, not the State. Now that would give me hives but contrary to reports, Obama did not oppose a firehouse primary in Michigan.
The writers lack of evidence for his claim against Obama & spurious claim that it was "some how" a "level playing field' in Florida suggests to me this was little more than a Clinton tract. Paid for by the Nation Institute Investigative Fund. posted 03/31/2008 at 16:43:16

Smears and Tears: How Obama's National Security Week Turned Into the Mendacity of Hype

Here is the real problem Mr. Wilson you seem to want to ignore and it has nothing to do with what the Obama campaign did or did not do.
1. Hillary Clinton supported the decision to go to war with Iraq. Spare me your attempts to confound the facts with nonsense we have all heard. She did not read the intelligence estimates, did not listen to Senior Senators like Graham and Edwards.
2. We have seen no tax returns from Clinton.
3. Why did the Clinton Library had to be taken to court to get even a small amount of her schedules? It's the same old Clinton lack of transparency we have all seen before!
4. We are not getting a complete list of donors to the Clinton Library but the ones we have seen are troubling to say the least, for we Democrats.
5. Her embellished tales of Bosnia, Macadonia, and the Irish peace process have simply illustrated the same old, same old, her and her husband's problem with telling the truth.
6. You take a pretty low road in your bashing of Obama as a Clinton surrogate, so its a tad disingenuous of you now to take Obama's surrogates to task.
7. Here is the real crunch: we are weary and justifiably wary of both the Clinton's and the Bush's; we don't want any more drama; we don't want any more lies; we don't want any more knee jerk reactions. posted 03/26/2008 at 16:08:52

Pastor Of Clinton's Former Church: Don't Use Wright To Polarize

Bless Rev. Snyder for his principled stand in regard to Dr. Wright.
This whole issue bothered me from the start.
The ethics of 'guilt by association; and 'separation between church and state,' seemed to go out the window. The argument pundits used to make a case that somehow Sen. Obama had a 'different or unique' relationship with his pastor that others did not, never held water, nor did they ever offer any proof to support that claim. I made the time to listen to not one but many sermons by Dr. Wright.
I was not concerned with Dr. Wrights comments about AIDS. I found that more quirky that offensive and only a fool could fail to understand and sympathize with that degree of justifiable paranoia among older African Americans.
When you put his comments into the context of the full sermon, not much holds water.
He is not a racist.
The oft repeated story that he urged blacks to say G-ddamn America rather than G-d Bless America is simply not true. It was within the context of a sermon from Luke 19: 37 - 44 and a demonstration of what those passages meant.
The same pretty much holds true of claims he was unpatriotic or un- American. He never said we deserved 9/11. He is fierce, quirky, funny and showed real compassion.
I am neither African American nor a Christian but I was moved.
I liked him, despite his quirks. posted 03/26/2008 at 03:08:02

Michigan, Florida, and the L-word

With all due respect Mr. Keyssar to use news reports as your source is a bit spotty. Most news only reports the daily spin; in some cases the Clinton spin that wants people to believe that somehow Obama is blocking a vote for Michigan and Florida; the other is the jabbering of the talking heads which in the absence of any real information or confirmations simply speculate.
While I am sure that Sen. Obama will be very careful and want some assurances on how a re-vote is done, he has not been the main obstacle of any of the plans. Although with some justification he was nervous of a 'mail-in ballot' without any of the checks and balances that they have in Oregon, the larger concern was from inside the party and the legislature in those two states. What would you do in Michigan where Clinton supporters would virtually bankroll a new primary but it would not allow for people who have voted already to vote in that primary?
Its a nightmare, not easily resolved and pointing fingers at Obama is neither helpful nor accurate.

Is the difference such that it would have a major effect on the issue of trust?

Experts Predict Race Will Dominate Campaign Narrative Going Forward

Get a grip, GoldCanyonGal!
Quit spinning this like he was derogatory toward his grandmother because he was anything but. He spoke truth and showed, not surprisingly, that he understood the stumbling blocks and grievances from both sides on the issue of race. He is after all, white and black.
He has clearly stated he did not think his grandmother was racist, just as he clearly stated he did not believe Geraldine Ferraro was racist.
He has clearly addressed the fault lines along the racial divide of being one of failed communication and lack of understanding.
Your selective use of his address on the issues of race over the last few weeks, that you spin to damn Obama as 'playing the race card' does not change the fact that prior to all this nonsense forcing him to address the issue of race, he never played the race card nor wanted to.
The same cannot be said of others however.

posted 03/24/2008 at 12:55:16
He never said that, he said according to the vote as reflected in delegate counts!
He also said earlier that the role of super delegates is to look at the over all total of delegates not a per state total!
In New Mexico, it was a hair thin difference between Obama and Clinton and had to go to a recount, hardly a decisive vote for Clinton!
To single Bill Richardson out because he chose Obama is a tad selective, what about the Clinton endorsers in states where Obama clearly won?
This is going to be an end race issue, where we are at when the last big states have been counted.
That's reality.
Clinton is trying to freeze the super delegates while she spins her game out, so understandably she is angry because Richardson broke that freeze.

Hillary and Bill got their wish and I might add only hope - the race card is on the table for good!
They have played it and pushed it from the beginning.
They recognized back in 2006 that if Obama got traction, he would be the one that would be a challenge for them. Well he got traction!
From the early days when Bill referred to him as a 'kid' then sang the praises of all the other democratic candidates in the running, omitting Obama - the fight has been on.
When treating him in a dismissive way, suggesting he was no one, nor any where close to being ready to even be a candidate failed, all they had left was the race card.
I would not be assuming that the "Muslim smear" or those carefully selected Rev. Wright video's are just the work of Conservative swift boaters? They would save their fire for an election. The only one who benefits right now from this kind of race baiting is the Clinton camp.
That's reality! Conservative swift boaters are just the convenient dumping ground for the blame!

Bill Clinton And Jeremiah Wright Photo Uncovered

What I find the saddest of this whole questionable affair is that not once did I see a single news show or critic examine if there was some merit behind any of Rev. Wrights comments. As Mike Huckabee so graciously pointed out a sermon does not have the benefit of written text and often you may look back and review it and realize that is not what you meant to say, or regret how you said it.
That consideration was never given to Rev. Wright but even worse, right now most people have no idea who Rev. Wright is. His life, his life's work and the best of him has been drowned out by the continuous loop of a few impolitic words showing the least of him.
Yet when you take the time and go back and look at this man's life and his achievements it is an awesome record. To build a church on the East Side of Chicago from less than 100 to over 8,000.
He did the kind of community work that reached out to the poor, the imprisoned, to those with HIV/AID and the homeless. He challenged his members and often was a critical with his own as he appeared on some of those sound bites with others, demanding that they be better parents, better citizens and take responsibility for their lives. Its the list of critical things we all agree must be done but few us get down in the grit and ever do. Rev. Jeremiah Wright's entire life was spent doing all the things we all think "someone" should do something about.
He is that someone who did.
This same man being cursed and called the most terrible things; not because what he said was worse; or more offensive; or less patriotic; or more bizarre than anything we had already heard from white preachers like Falwell, Parsley, and a whole list of other white Preachers being courted and dined by Presidents and candidates but because.......................

he same people are cursing for saying things we have all heard before form other white preachers (and worse) his man did and actually put faith and what he believed into action.

Obama, Clinton And McCain's Passports Breached: Two State Dept Officials Fired, Investigation Underway

Sorry it would be real easy, perhaps too blame it on Condi and the Conservative Admin. BUT the fact that Patrick F. Kennedy (no relation to the Kennedy clan) took office in Nov. 2007, happens to have been Assist. Sec. of State for Clinton makes me curious. Further, when you look at his background and placements it is not unreasonable to assume he would have known former Ambassador Wilson (an ardent Clinton supporter and Obama basher). It certainly makes me uneasy so I don't think we should be too quick to assume it was the Republicans just yet.
Had it not been for the fact that the first two were fired, I might be willing to accept it was curiosity. Three incidents; January, February and March and no one contacts Obama until AFTER some one decided they were not 'politically motivated' and FIRED them which legally put them beyond reach of further questioning by anyone!
The 3rd is reprimanded and in all likelihood is the one that may have done it out of curiosity, but what about the other 2? We won't ever know!
Welcome to Washington, the dirtiest game of all and the Clinton's are every bit the player as the Republicans and they certainly have the contacts to do it.
It is ugly and it is sad. Like Hillary saying she was glad that Obama made that speech on race issues because it needed to be made? But we discover today that she has been using the Rev. Wright incident against him with superdelgates! While McCain absolutely makes it clear that Wright's views do not reflect Obama's views, and even Mike Huckabee a former pastor himself says Obama should not be judged by what his Pastor says, not our girl Hillary. She is in their like a dirty shirt playing it for all its worth, 'as far as I know.'
This is the stuff that turns people off and makes them give up any hope that Washington can be redeemed from the inside players.
