I'm REALLY old.

Hard core democrat (even met JFK when I was 18. He came to campaign at Washington State U where I was a member of Young Democrats)

Marched for civil rights in Alabama (I lived in Huntsville - protected and surrounded by the NASA bubble of tolerant thought, and groups of us drove to and joined the protests)

Marched for women's rights

Marched against the Vietnam war.

Marched against assault weapons (still an on and off-going battle)

Having grown up in the racist/sexist 40's and 50's, I am stunned and still filled with gratitude by the progress made in my lifetime! And ALL of this change, by the way, led by us "liberals"!

When I get emails containing stuff waxing nostalgic about the "good old days", my response is always, "Yeah, s'pose they were if you were white!"

Joined vigils against the Iraq war.

Ain't dead yet, and realize that nobody can appreciate change as much as those who have lived through it! It's natural to take hard-fought gains for granted, and we old folks all worry about the sense of entitlement and complacency that settles in after the battle has been won. The war for a humane existence will never end.

Make your kids work for and appreciate what they get, and read history! Our system is fragile!
