ReasonIsMyReligion asks, "Am I the only one bothered by the use of multiple flags as wallpaper for press conferences by EITHER party?"

Well, next year's House guidance will include for all press conferences keeping at least one hand firmly clutched onto a flagpole at all times whilst on the dais. All these extra poles up there this year are just to ensure there's room up there for enough flagpoles, 1 per Congresssone.

Each press conference will be preceded and concluded with a singing of the national anthem. During the singing of the national anthem, all Congressones must have the right hand over the heart, and the left hand jabbing the pin from the lapel flag pin into their left eyeballs... posted 05/16/2008 at 15:17:34
Hey Will, although I agree the con's use of the flag pin thing is pretty silly, your posting here is as well.

The flag-hanging info you cite relates to having the flag flat against an object like a wall, window, etc.

When hanging from a flag pole, so long as the union is uppermost (i.e., ain't hanging upside down), there's nothing further to accomplish. The flag is then free to unfurl itself with whichever way the wind blows. posted 05/16/2008 at 15:08:04

If I ever had a show like Matthews does, and someone started right off shouting, I would have given him one polite warning, "Listen, you are a guest here on my show and I want people to hear what you have to say, but you're going to have to stop shouting and talking over me".

Then, when he did it again, just snap my fingers at the producer to kill the yammerhead's mike. While the yammerhead silently yammers on (still ON camera), turn to the other guest and have a polite discussion.

I bet if Matthews did that or time or two, word would get out and even people as stupid as this James fellow would behave themselves on the show. posted 05/16/2008 at 13:56:50

Relax also wrote, "The fact is that McCain and others called for Heinz's tax returns"

This is a "fact"? I had not seen that McCain called for THK's tax returns.

"Derived henceforth", eh?

(Snickering).

In any event, if you trouble yourself to read the 1st Amendment, you'll see that it says what the government shall not do. While application of this principle through the later amendments (for example, the 14th) has caused the bill of rights to apply to state and local governments (where the original intent of application of the bill of rights was the federal goverment), in no wise can you stretch the first amendment to prohibit actions by Verizon or other non-governmental corporations.

Have you factored in confounding variables?

What about the idea that lots of these bible-thumpin' pro-lifer states having poor sex ed are also states having significant populations of underpriviliged minorities? (Think Mississippi, for example).

Is there any chance that having a large chunk of your population being socio-economically disadvantaged tends to increase teen pregnancy rates?

Keith Olbermann Continues Feud Against Wal-Mart, Wal-Mart Responds

What matters is whether your own state legislatures (and Congress, if/when your medical benefits fall under ERISA as "employment benefits") are willing to do anything in these circumstances. posted 04/01/2008 at 10:09:58
Does seem like a dumb one for WalMart to have gone after, legal entitlements aside, given the "sad" factor in this lady's case. I mean, what veep was dumb enough not to realize this was going to hit the news cycle pretty quickly?

By the way, for ANYONE reading this. It is a near certainty that if you have a group medical plan (through Kaiser, United Health Care, CIGNA, BCBS, whatever/younameit), you also have the same sort of "recovery" clauses in your health plan.

There are a few states having statutes barring at least certain levels of recovery. (If interested, google "made whole doctrine"). But in most places, you're on your own negotiating with the insurance company (or, more likely, their collection agency) if the insurance company pays medical expenses for you then you recover from the injuring 3rd party.

Another "by the way"- the statement that is purported to have been issued by WalMart in answer to Mr. Olbermann was actually issued last week to CNN officials, when Anderson Cooper covered this story. posted 04/01/2008 at 09:57:25

Chelsea Clinton Asked About Monica Lewinsky Again, Watch Video

So, what exactly was the student's question this time? The clip provided here doesn't have the question. The last time, the question was whether Senator Clinton's credibility had been damaged by the Lewinski thing. I don't think it's fair to characterize it as a "question about the lewinski affair" - more a question of its impact on the public's perception of Senator Clinton.

It is a good contrast. IMHO VP Gore's problem was (1) assuming that most viewers and commenters would at least make an attempt to rationally analyze his words (which they for the most part did not - but if they had, would have understood the gist of what he was saying and seen it to be true) and (2) having a slight tendency toward grand, sweeping statements. With respect and condolences on your family's loss, still...

(quoting a first part of Herrington's post) "Sweeping conclusions that are not grounded ...is all I see in your posts."

And, speaking of sweeping conclusions,

(quoting a second part of Herrington's post) "I lost an Aunt at the Federal Building in Oklahoma City, white hate did that. "

Really? That was "white hate"?

Or, was it a nut job who hated the federal government, and who happened to be a white man? posted 03/21/2008 at 12:49:54
That part of the post really struck me as well. I've visited several majority/all black churches with friends in both the south and up north. Never heard any of these sorts of ranting diatribes from those pulpits. posted 03/21/2008 at 11:57:16
"It is not only our color but our creed in which we find differences, and so we can fear Jews and Mormons as well as phenotypically different peoples. Combine the two, as in Rev. Wright, and a bigoted response is nearly irresistible."

So, if I don't like what the good Reverend Wright preaches, then I'm a bigot?

Another alternative you may want to consider is the nearly irresistible response called rational discretion. posted 03/21/2008 at 11:51:57
Please avoid transferring/projecting your inner conflicts onto the rest of society. posted 03/21/2008 at 11:25:38
