Is NATO Dead or Alive?

You assume that NATO should continue but fail to explain why that should be so. NATO was created to meet a threat that no longer exists. I cannot think of a single good reason why NATO should be either in Afghanistan or in Kosovo, both of which have morphed into serious problems precisely due to heavy handed outside intervention. Or why it should be engaged against terrorism or proliferation or China or energy policy or climate change, other "challenges" that you cite. Other mechanisms exist to deal with all of those problems and they are all issues that have nothing to do with a defensive military alliance founded to link the US and Western Europe in an effort to stop Soviet expansion. The public in western Europe is well aware that NATO no longer makes any sense, as you note, though you seem to think it is a packaging and marketing problem. You didn't make clear if you favor expanding NATO, which Russia would see as a direct threat, another completely stupid idea. Europeans understand that NATO has become a last resort option for the US when it invades other countries and then screws up completely, leaving the pieces to be picked up by someone else... posted 04/01/2008 at 13:32:59

You may not like Musharraf - clearly you don't - but the fact is that he has done more to capture and kill genuine terrorists than anyone, including the FBI and CIA combined. He has done so against the desires of most Pakistanis who dislike the United States and did not want any meddling in the tribal regions and for no political gain for him personally. If you want the corrupt clowns who are his opponents to take over completely in the name of democracy, you will almost certainly regret it. You say that Musharraf has "not done enough" against terrorists. Wait until you see what is coming... You seem to think that the new government will take care of the needs of the Pakistani people. They will first think of lining their own pockets and then will set up bank accounts in Switzerland a-la Benazir so they can eventually escape with the money they've stolen. posted 04/01/2008 at 19:07:56

These people were the enablers of all the war crimes committed by Bush and his cronies and I would love to see them appearing in the dock at a Nuremberg type trial some day, but that would require the Democrats developing a real backbone, which is not likely as many of them went along with the White House agenda. I would imagine that under the Third Reich there were similar talking heads to our Kagan-O'Hanlon-Pollack (and let's not forget Kristol), on radio in those days, who explained how Germany was bringing civilization to the Slavic lands to the east. posted 03/28/2008 at 16:37:26

It should be required reading for every American and most definitely for every Congressman since they have had the power to stop this and have done nothing.
