Obama Responds To Bush, McCain Appeasement Attack

Obama Using Cross Flyer In Kentucky

He stuck by Wright for a long time, but I understand why he needed to distance himself. Bill Moyers said the problem with the media is oversimplification, and he is absolutely right. We all have people in our lives we have cared for a long time; maybe we believe in some of their ideas, but we dismiss much of what they say. Some of this is generational, I'm sure. Obama respected Wright, saw him as a early mentor. He did meet him when he was in his 20s after all. He respected what he did with his church--urging self-respect, work programs, AIDS programs, etc. I'm sure he knew Wright was controversial, but I also believe Obama is not a radical and has good judgment. He disagreed with his church giving Farrakhan the lifetime achievement award. He respected Wright as a man but didn't agree with all of his ideas. We can all say this about many of our colleagues and close friends. I can even say this about my pastor. I feel badly, frankly, that he had to distance himself from Wright, but in the end it was probably necessary. posted 05/14/2008 at 23:32:51
And I think there are many people who are Christian and liberal (I am one). I agree completely in the separation of church and state, but I also think that people should not be criticized for being religious, either. Obama has been consistent in discussing his faith, so I do not think he is pandering, and I also am tired of the Right acting as if religion is their domain. posted 05/14/2008 at 23:21:04

Obama In Limbo Over 'Almost Nominee' Status

I am sorry for Clinton supporters that your candidate lost, but to say that Obama is a BIG NOTHING? How ridiculous. He is an incredibly accomplished man. And my mother is a less-educated, older woman who voted for Obama in the primary and will do so in the primary. Why? She wants her issues to be recognized--healthcare, the war, jobs and opoortunity for her children and grandchildren. And she knows her issues will be ignored by the Republicans. She was a single mother, who worked as a waitress, and is surviving after her triple bypass on Medicaid (which will expire next year), until she qualified for Social Security and we don't know what we will do when she no longer has medical care. She knows McCain will not address her concerns, which are mirrored by millions in the country. So, please, get over your anger and remember what is truly at stake. posted 05/14/2008 at 12:01:39

West Virginia: Country's Most Racist Voters

No, he doesn't. There have only been 3 black senators since Reconstruction, and black voters usually vote for Democratic presidential candidates--white candidates, just as white voters do. Now, for the first time in history, a black candidate has the chance to actually win the White House. To show pride for a candidate from one's own group is different than saying you will not vote for someone because he or she is a member of another group. Clinton had the black vote. Blacks did not say they would not vote for her because she was white. And they will vote for other white candidates. In addition, as there are more black candidates winning office, identity politics will fade, which will be wonderful, because that will mean that being a woman or black candidate (or Hispanic or Asian, for that matter) is no longer extraordinary. posted 05/14/2008 at 23:06:43

Will Obama Win Enough White Votes to Beat McCain?

Yes, but in the South, states qand local communities put up roadblocks for true access to the franchise--poll taxes, literacy tests, and violence. The federal government had to step in to guarantee the true right to vote. And we cannot ever be sanguine that the right to vote is permanently guaranteed. We must all always be vigilant. Netflix: Don't Call Us Obsolete

I love Netflix. It has great customer service, it is always trying to come up with new services, has a great website, and it caters to movie lovers. I was really turned off by the tactics Blockbuster used against rival video stores, and it was clear it tried to do the same thing with Netflix. Initially, Blockbuster copied Netflix's website, and Netflix had to sue to get them to change it. I think Blockbuster figured it could do what it wanted. I know many people like Blockbuster, but I will stick with the company that treats its customers well and that came up with the business model in the first place. If Blockbuster had begun this business model, we never would have had the art, foreign, and obscure movies that Blockbuster has in its library. It's only because they must compete with Netflix that they have them. (Their video stores are pretty generic after all.) posted 04/19/2008 at 14:25:00

Top Clinton Aide: Wright Is Key Issue In My Talks With Superdels

So, she is running on "vote for me, I'm not a scary black man." Obama's poll numbers are up, so hopefully the Superdelegates won't buy it. I know some people won't vote for Obama because of the Wright issue, but in some ways having Fox discuss Wright adnauseum reduces its potency. It's obviously a hatchet job. Obama is a skilled politician, and he has rebounded and will continue to respond where needed. Hillary, though, is done for me. No chance ever for my vote. Obama's Anger--Redux

My white family did not understand how different the law and schools treated white people until our biracial nephews were born. My mother is raising her grandchildren, and she definitely sees a difference in how the shools treat any infraction. They assume the black boys (who are teenagers) are potential criminals, whereas the infractions of the white teenage boys (her other grandchildren) are overlooked. And police follow the black teenagers around and tell them to disperse or face mob action but never tell the white boys to do that. They do not perceive the white boys as criminals, so they don't bother them. posted 03/29/2008 at 11:14:20

New York Times: Cutting Staff But Making Movies

I love the Daily Show and watch it regularly, but I would never think it a substitute for in-depth investigative journlism, and I doubt Jon Stewart would, either. Identification of events and newsmakers in a poll certainly cannot discern the level of depth of knowledge of those events. Many on this site have bemoaned the lack of depth and horrible quality of television journalism, and I can certainly understand the fear that newspaper journalism will follow suit. posted 03/29/2008 at 16:24:25

Beyond Jeremiah: A New Kind of Media for Obama's New Kind of Politics

But we have to safeguard the Internet. Every time there is a new medium, initially there is access, but eventually that access becomes limited to the existing companies that controlled the previously most-dominant medium. It sounds as if he is afraid of becoming a pariah in the media as Reverend Wright has become. I still cannot believe that the media has not discussed Wright's sermons in their entirety. That is beyond irresponsible. If there was malpractice in journalism, the MSM would be guilty of it. When I am flipping through the channels during commercial breaks, I go by Fox just to see if the Wright comments are being played or if they are discussing Wright--again. Last night, Bill O'Reilly and a former CBS news reporter was complaining about Roland Martin from CNN, whom O'Reilly described as a "race" guy and an apologist, because he was trying to discuss Wright's sermons in context. They pointed out that Martin is black, implying that he obviously had an agenda and couldn't be trusted. They said such crazy things that I couldn't believe it. posted 03/26/2008 at 18:58:19

Morning Shows Snipe At Clinton Over Bosnia Remarks

It is news because Clinton used this as evidence of her experience and of her readiness as commander in chief. Also, the fact that she was caught in a lie goes to the heart of her trustworthiness. Certainly, a misstatement in which she confused a few details is excusable, but the details here are too specific. posted 03/25/2008 at 13:58:32

The Fools of Spring Available for Comment: a Snapshot of Impressions of Madness at Dawn

Wonderfully written post. I am also wrestling with the idea of separating myself from TV news completely. I am so tired of hearing these voices discuss this election as if it is just a basketball game. We as citizens know what political policies do for us. Will that student grant program mean I get to go to college, or will I have to go part-time to community college forever, taking one or two classes at a time? Will that dental program get funded so people who can't afford to go to the dentist get their cavities filled, or will their teeth decay so they have to get dentures at the age of 30? Will we continue to send soldiers to Iraq 3 or 4 or 5 tours? (Or is that issue only important if it is in the public eye in November so it affects the election?) These people at all the news networks are in a self-created bubble. They have no sense of the real America, but unfortunately they do have real power to drive agendas. I think people will need to turn their televisions off to get their attention. posted 03/25/2008 at 11:14:55

Crunch Time: John Edwards Needs To Step Up For Barack

I know, but it is still so soon after the controversy. It is natural that the number would be higher, but the fact that 7 in 10 say the Wright issue would not influence their vote is good. The issue will die down over time. Big Dems need to begin defending Obama over this issue. If McCain can say that Obama should not be judged by the words of his supporters, that he should be judged by his own words, then, damn, so can Pelosi, Gore, Edwards, Reid, and, yes, Hillary Clinton. You don't have to endorse someone to say that people should be treated with common fairness. posted 03/22/2008 at 20:04:05

Hypocrisy in the Public Sphere on Obama's Speech

I agree that the government did not introduce AIDS, but after the Tuskegee experiments, I understand why people are skeptical. We have many examples of our government treating its citizens, including its soldiers, with total disreagard (think of Agent Orange, Gulf War syndrome, etc.), and then labeling those people as crazy when they complain. Only years later do people find out the truth. Also, we know that there are crooked cops out there, who work with drug dealers, either helping drugs come into communities or preventing its spread. We know of horrible corruption in which the black community is often collateral damage. Before we judge that the black community as completely off base, I think we need to do our own research. Just this week, a guy was arrested for requiring sex from women to get green cards, and there is videotape of police officers running down black suspects with their police cars. I think our government and its employees have proven time and time again that citizens cannot trust them to have their best interests in mind. People who have less power don't get listened to and then they are dismissed as cranks until years later. Then history judges the culprits, but its often too late to protect the citizens who have been damaged. posted 03/22/2008 at 10:17:24

Obama's Church Pushes Controversial Doctrines

When did not following the Republican agenda become meaning someone was anti-American? It seems that as long as you support a Republican or are labeled a right-wing person, you can make racist statements or comments connecting the country's morality and 9/11, etc. That seems to be just fine. What in the hell is patriotism? It's not defined as military service, since Bush, Cheney, and their ilk made sure they stayed out of Vietnam. Seems that patriotism goes pretty cheap if all it means is that you put a $ 2.00 flag pin on your lapel. We have to take back our own definitions of patriotism. This idea that Trinity is anti-American because it questioned U.S. policies abroad and its policies at home is ridiculous. Christianity means nothing if people do not question the way they live their lives. I certainly hope Trinity opposed apartheid (along with every other church in the U.S.), and who thinks that Jesus was blonde and blue-eyed living in the Middle East? I may not agree with everything that the church says, but so what? I'm not voting for Wright for president. Obama started going to this church in his 20s, when he was a community organizer for the Southside. It serves his constituency, and it is also where he became a Christian. This church is not some cult. It is in a mainstream denomination, is well-known in Chicago, and many people go to it, from all walks of life. If every church's bulletins, websites, and sermons went under a national microscope, then none would survive scrutiny. If any did, then I doubt there would be enough substance there to encourage anyone to attend. Can we please go on to another topic and leave this fine church alone? posted 03/22/2008 at 22:10:54

Meet The (White) Man Who Inspired Wright's Controversial Sermon

Last night, after reading this article, Erika Yancy's post about her church, and the CNN blog that discussed the sermons, I tried to find out if the news channels were reporting on this. CNN did a segment, but of course did a talking head segment (with Roland and Bay Buchanan) rather than a real report, so rather than discussing the fact that CNN screwed up, they still rehashed the text of Wright's words and whether they were "real theology," "patriotic," etc. I know Roland is trying, but perhaps he should go on another show, where they will discuss the media and their role. Also, they said they have been trying to find Peck's appearance on Fox after 9/11 and couldn't find it yet. This is ridiculous. posted 03/22/2008 at 09:37:23
I am so glad Obama called out the media in his speech. Why were Wright's controversial statements placed in a loop over and over and replayed endlessly on all channels? Why were the context of his sermons not discussed at all? If the "journalists" were too busy pontificating, could they not at least send their interns to do a little research? posted 03/21/2008 at 15:46:51

A Few Unanswered Questions About Bill Richardson's Obama Endorsement

Frankly, if Richardson decided to vote for Clinton because his state did, other nonpoliticians in New Mexico wouldn't necessarily do so. And his endorsement is worth many more votes to Obama than the 1 actual superdelegate vote he will actually give. But unless everyone agrees to vote according to their states, you won't see a huge number of people doing so, because it wouldn't be an even playing field. I suspect that superdelegates will vote for a number of reasons. If there is a move toward Obama, some Clinton people will defect. If a move toward Clinton, the reverse will happen. Some will vote as their state does because it would be politically damaging otherwise. posted 03/21/2008 at 12:29:54

Some Blues for Mr. Charlie: Obama's Moment of Truth

I think that whites are sometimes judged unfairly, but I think the bigger question is whether whites would challenge their own stereotypes and support changing unfair laws and policies. Think about the disparities in the criminal justice system, for instance. The tough on crime laws had horrible effects on the black community, and they were just used as political soundbites for white politicians. Did those politicians really think about those laws once they helped them get elected? We can't continue this dance of whites saying, "I personally did not discriminate," and blacks saying, "All problems are caused by racism." Racism caused immense harm, and the black community MUST work against defeatism. Individual whites may not have caused slavery, Jim Crow, and the sins of racism, yet they MUST work toward eliminating the perpetuation of that harm. If we cannot get past the stalemate, we cannot progress. posted 03/21/2008 at 14:24:41

Can Clinton Win The Popular Vote?

Regarding Michigan and Florida, I do sympathize for the voters. But Clinton did not protest the stripping of the delegates when the decision was made. Why did she not call press conferences, argue for the voters, make a big fuss in 2007? She didn't because at the time it wasn't politically necessary for her to do so. She figured she was the frontrunner, but the delegates themselves would not really matter. She could be on the ballot in Michigan, was already on the ballot in Florida, and win both beauty contests, then when she and the Republican candidate ran during the general election, she could campaign claiming at that time that she had "won" both states. Her theory was based on the inevitability theory, the Super Tuesday theory, that everything would be wrapped up by February 5, that she had no real competition for the nomination. She did not count on the 50-state theory. She only became concerned about "voters' rights" when her chances for the nomination were threatened. She has no credibility in this argument. I think the delegates should be seated in some way. A redo could be possible, but in no way should elections be funded by supporters of one campaign with rules that support one campaign over another. And I suggest that Michigan and Florida voters concentrate on making sure those state politicians who voted to move up the primary are ousted in the next election. posted 03/21/2008 at 11:47:53

I'm afraid the problem is that no matter what he says every syllable will be parsed apart for hidden meanings and exploited. Trinity has been posting more of his sermons on Youtube, and I watched the sermon that included the G*D America. The rest of the sermon was not a loud rant. It was a measured sermon listing the sins that government has made against black Americans with the theme that government can change but God does not change, so put your faith in God. Yes, the language and examples were different than what would have been given in my church, but my pastor has certainly given that same message many times. He has discussed the sins of our country, said we will face a day of reckoning, and that we should put our faith in God. I am thrilled that Richardson has endorsed Obama. I saw Obama on Larry King last night, and I was impressed once again. I think he will get this nomination. posted 03/21/2008 at 10:57:11
