McCain Sets Timetable For Getting Out Of Iraq

Good analogy. The Republican party is underwater. But unlike Repub leaders, dolphins have a level of intelligence approaching that of human beings. posted 05/15/2008 at 12:21:51
McCain is saying we'll be done by 2013 because we will have beaten al-Qaida by then. Some questions:

1) Does McCain think al-Qaida is the problem in Baghdad? Does he not understand the problem is about 1% al-Qaida and about 99% sectarian violence?
2) What does "winning" mean? Does it mean the violence will come to an end?
3) What if we DON'T "win" on time? Will McCain pull out before the job is done?
4) Hasn't McCain spent the last five years saying that setting a deadline merely emboldens our enemies and demoralizes our troops? How is this plan not an utterly hypocritical flip-flop born out of desperation? posted 05/15/2008 at 12:16:15

Barack Obama and Israel: More GOP Lies

I remember the Mideast before Carter. It was a lush green land where flowers bloomed among the oil derricks painted in polka dots and paisley. Sunni and Shiite, Jewish and Christian people heldblock parties with potluck dinners. There was no Farsi or Arabic word for 'war' or 'gun' because the blissful Middle East knew nothing of these things. Then that damned Carter ruined everything. posted 05/14/2008 at 09:36:35

The Bipartisanship Scam

House members get two-year terms, not six.

Term limits for politicians would make lobbyists even more powerful, since they would be the only ones with more than 12 years experience in Washington. (And what do you think term-limited pols would be doing, anyway?)

I'd rather look for ways to level the playing field so incumbents wouldn't be re-elected 98% of the time. posted 05/13/2008 at 13:51:47

McCain Implies Iraq War Is For Oil: Watch Video

It's not a surprise that oil is at the root of all policy and action regarding the Middle East. That doesn't mean Iraq is a war for oil, it means oil dependence is a piece in the puzzle that, if removed, would make our problems in the Middle East go away. McCain can't say this though, because 1) he's about as articulate as GWB, and 2) his voter base can't grasp any idea that won't fit on a bumper sticker. posted 05/05/2008 at 18:48:35

Johnny Come Late-Nightly

The main difference between broadcast-channel and cable-channel comics is that the former--Leno, Letterman, O'Brien--target politicians while the latter--Stewart, Colbert--target the news media.

Most nights, the Daily Show gets its best humor by simply editing together a dozen clips of different pundits using the same cliches to hammer home the same inane points about the same non-issues of the day. It's the TV equivalent of YouTube (without all the dreck).

Leno, on the other hand, basically makes jokes that reinforce the banal media talking points. It may have a bad effect on our political system because lots of people who don't watch the news do watch Leno-O'Brien-Letterman, but who's to blame for that? At most, LOL are a side-effect of a much larger disease. posted 05/01/2008 at 11:30:20

Probing a Political Paradox: Why the Discredited Right Still Sets the Agenda and Dominates the Debate

Placing the blame on corporate media is exactly right but you make it sound more like a vast right-wing conspiracy than it really is. Project Censored (www.projectcensored.org) does a great job of explaining how the corporate model leads to self-censorship even within left-of-center media. As with many things that go wrong in a democratic capitalist society, the breakdown is gradual and mostly unnoticed even by active participants. I believe it started in the mid-90s when media started consolidating and manifested itself during the Clinton-Lewinsky affair and the 2000 election, but it only started to become visible after 9/11, especially during the run-up to the Iraq War. The only mitigating factor has been the rise of Internet media, where refugees from the MSM can still tell the truth. posted 04/29/2008 at 14:40:15

Hillary Clinton Ad Features Osama Bin Laden: Campaign AdWatch

What association are we supposed to make? Are we connecting Osama bin Laden with Hillary Clinton? Somehow i don't think that was her intent.

Now if you fast-cut back and forth between OBL and Obama I would say yeah, that's waay out of bounds. Here, Osama is just one of many current events (didja notice the Katrina picture, or didjer brain fail to make that association) used to say "we need competent leadership." posted 04/21/2008 at 18:39:21
plbcm's point is that the ad isn't meant to be scary at all. It's a laundry list of the kinds of things that a President has to deal with, and the shot of bin Laden is one of more than a dozen fast cuts. It's 1/2 second at most. Linkins' inference is that Clinton is somehow trying to link Obama with terrorism in a sinister way, and that's just not the case here. This is just a slightly more positive way of delivering the "3 am phone call" message. It's the best argument Clinton has, weak as it may be. posted 04/21/2008 at 18:33:34

This reads like Chez hasn't actually seen the movie. Clinton: Gore And Kerry Lost Because They Were Viewed As Elitist

2000 was stolen by the Supreme Court.

2004 was stolen by electronic voting machines. Exit polls showed Kerry about 7 million votes ahead. Machine tallies put Bush 3 million votes ahead, a 10 million vote swing, or about 10 percent off from exit polls. That's a national average, but the disparaty between exit polls and electronic vote tallies was most pronounced in several swing states, and the Election Board found more than 1,200 "irregularities" in voting, concentrated in those states, virtually all benefiting GOP.

In both elections, but particularly in 2004, mainstream media failed in its job as watchdog for democracy. posted 04/14/2008 at 09:49:50

Greenspan: Economy In Recession

We also have socialized police and fire services, roads, public parks, libraries and a lot of other things that we all pay for based on our ability to pay, and that we all use based or how much we need or value them.

And, um, public education IS socialized (duh). I don't have kids but I pay into the system same as parents with 4 kids in the system. And gunshot victims get admitted to the hospital even if they can't pay. These institutions are at least partly socialized already -- but the funding methods are set up to create a kind of apartheid (based on class, not race) whereby a few people have more "pie" than they can eat while many go hungry.

Our education problems are complex and not solved merely by more socialism, but the healthcare would work much better for the vast majority of Americans if we could cut out the insurance companies (except for coverage of rare, expensive treatments), go back to non-profit hospitals, rein in pharma company marketing tactics, and reform the medical malpractice system to compensate victims fairly and swiftly without the ridiculous win-the-lottery jury awards. posted 04/09/2008 at 11:16:33

Petraeus Testimony: Summing Up Today's Hearing on Iraq (Update)

Maybe, maybe not. It might depend on whether it could be proven that Bushco knew their reasons for invading were bogus. But there's no question that the extended detainment at Guantanamo without due process, the institutional torture at Abu Ghraib, waterboarding of suspected al-Qaeda members and other episodes in the "war on terror" qualify as war crimes. posted 04/08/2008 at 17:43:04
BushCo knew exactly what they were getting us into. If GWB himself didn't know, it was only through his own willful ignorance. Cheney/Rumsfeld/Rice aren't that dumb and neither are our intelligence services.

Bush may have sort of believed that the promise of democracy would be enough to tamp down centuries of hatred among these groups. But post-war Iraq hs never looked like democracy. Imprisonmnet without due process, cruel and inhuman punishment, violation of free speech, religious intolerance--how does a free nation rise from those ashes.

The only motivation for war that makes any sense is the simple profit motive: Halliburton and the rest of the war contractors will make sure BushCo will never want for campaign financing. posted 04/08/2008 at 17:31:51

Obama: Clinton Can Run "As Long As She Wants"

People in states that haven't voted yet might like to have a voice for a change.
People in states that have already voted might prefer not to give others a voice--as long as it's their candidate who is selected.
Maybe Clinton should step aside for the good of the Democratic party, but for the good of the democratic process, she should run "as long as she wants."
What BIll-Hill shouldn't do is spread more lies and dissemination about Obama, or talk about how great McCain is. These tactics are designed to put a gun to the superdelegates' heads--either overturn the majority of Dem voters or we'll help put a Republican in office so we can run against him in 2012.
This nomination was Clinton's to lose. Her business-as-usual politics, divisive campaigning and victimization tactics have alienated many voters who once liked her. If she and Bill continue on this path they risk losing the goodwill they have built up over 16 years. posted 04/01/2008 at 10:33:11
Yes she can, mathematically, win. If she gets 100% of the votes from here on out she will win the nomination. If she gets less than 50% of the vote she can still get the nomination from the superdelegates. The first scenario isn't plausible, the second is inadvisable. But let's not say it's mathematically impossible -- leave the fuzzy math to the GOP. posted 04/01/2008 at 10:14:17

Rice: Race Still Issue Because Of U.S. "Birth Defect"

An unfortunate choice of metaphors. For the most part, a birth defect can't be corrected; you just live with it. Slavery was corrected, but it took another 100 years of unequal treatment before the Civil Rights Act. Even now there is a lot of inequity in law enforcement and the courts. Obama has shown more leadership than the other candidates in recognizing this. But he has not interest in making race a central theme of his candidacy. It's his political opponents--and I guess that would mean the Bush-Rice team--that want to keep race a front-burner issue. posted 03/28/2008 at 14:42:44

Bill Clinton Praises "Moderate" McCain

It's warped thinking, not only because it's wrong on the facts, but because it's politically tone-deaf. If McCain is a moderate, then Hillary must be an extreme liberal if she disagrees with him; if she doesn't disagree, why vote for her when McCain has more integrity and experience?

It's as if the Clintons know Hillary won't get the nomination and they would rather see McCain win (so she can run against him in 2012?) than Obama. posted 03/28/2008 at 11:04:20

Players, Not Cheerleaders

Maintaining a strike force of a few thousand soldiers is not a continuation of the war or occupation. An immediate and complete pullout could easily cause chaos, whereas the plans put forth by Clinton and Obama have the best chance of achieving our goals.

The fact that Clinton flipped so easily on the question of independent contractors is not a point in her favor. Probably both of them concluded that it would be a bad idea to pull Blackwater out of Iraq when there was no one to fill the security gap--better to pull the contractors out as you pull the troops out. Votes should be practical matters first and political point-scoring last. Obama tends to vote for or against the actual law and its actual application -- it's not an idealistic vote on what the law ought to say, and it's not a political vote based on what Americans think the law says. Clinton's votes are always political--she doesn't need to read the law, she just reads the poll results. There are worse ways to govern than by public opinion, but it's not real leadership. posted 03/27/2008 at 09:38:33
