I did exactly the same. Married as a college junior. Three sons before I figured out what was causing them. A hefty student loan. Oh my!

What I did was easy. I worked. Started a career in an industry that would pay me what I needed-eventually. I wanted to smell the roses but I couldn't. I had a wife and children and responsibilities.

You can help best by being better informed of the facts of both topics you write about. As a PHD you should know that how you FEEL usually has little to do with actual events. Mr. Bell's death is regrettable but he didn't help his cause by running from the police. A judge aquitted all three policemen ( two blacks-one hispanic) so tell us what exactly you're looking for here.

I'm sorry Mr Bell is dead. Having said that (and meaning it) I have to comment that it is not very smart to make people with guns nervous. Especially when those people are police.

The black community's relationship with the police has to change. I know it's a two way street, but it doesn't help to have Al Sharpton and people like him front and center on an issue. Also, the fact that 2 of the 3 cops are black and the other a latino says racism wasn't an ingredient here.

What many people miss is that police deal every day with the dregs of society. Their image of society changes with experience. The rookie who wants to help mankind is too soon the 10 year veteran who only wants to survive until retirement.

Claudia, it's professors like you who make me ashamed of my degree from your school. Noone has mentioned that two of the three police are african-americans. Does that mean that only one was racist?

A better approach to the situation would be to teach your students how not to be another statistic. Tell them that cops, black, white, brown or yellow, are people. They can be scared and panic. More importantly THEY HAVE GUNS!! I raised my sons to obey the cops. I told them they can't win with a stacked deck. If they got in a jam, be quiet, go to the station house and call me. They never had to but they knew the drill.

That the judge didn't believe the witnesses is telling. The victim wasn't exactly a choir boy on his way to church. Those of you condemning the police don't have all the facts.

To all who replied to my post; Go back and read what I wrote. I made a point to say I was not in any way justifying rape. My point is there are different degrees of murder, robbery etc. There should be degrees for this crime as well. An 18 year old boy having sex with a 16 year old girl is guilty of rape. A 40 year old predator abuses his young step-daughter is also guilty. Should both go to jail for 30 years?

Innocent victims and those who contribute to their situation all suffer but to what extent we blame the man is varied. Did you know him? Were you drinking? Did "making out" get out of hand? Was he a predator who attacked a naive and innocent young girl? How old was he? Were you dating? Could you identify him to the police? Why were the police less than what you wanted? Perhaps they saw a girl who was "playing with fire".

Don't for a minute think I am justifying rape under ANY circumstances. I'm not. It's just that the definition of rape has evolved. In my day, it was common for a girl to say no as she was taking off her clothes.
