I come from a long line of Republicans, stretching back to the time of Lincoln. My grandfather was involved in Republican politics in PA, but he was more of the Goldwater variety: smaller government, and otherwise leave people's private lives alone.
Me? I registered as a Republican in 1980 when I was 19, because I thought it was what I was "supposed" to do. I haven't changed that registration over the years, though I have voted for fewer and fewer Republicans. And I've actually never voted for a Republican for president - my first president vote in 1980 went to Anderson, the independent. Otherwise, all Democrats.
As the Republican party has turned harder to the right, I've dug in my heels and decided to remain in it. Why? Because I enjoy being a thorn in their side, and because I feel that liberal Republicans are an endangered species. I'm just stubborn enough not to give up my turf.
