China's Troubles: How to Help

This isn't the time to be mean-spirited. But let me point out that you have some of your facts wrong. China is far from the richest country in the world - there is extensive poverty here in China. And yes, China did send money to help with Katrina - it was helpful but it was mostly to show concern. Yes, they shouldn't be in control of Tibet and they should spend less on their military and more on poverty eradication - but when people are suffering it isn't the time to be uncharitable. posted 05/13/2008 at 04:44:45

Let's "Bomb" Myanmar -- with Rice

The China connection to Burma is that China is the only powerful country that supports the un-elected military junta that has controlled Burma for almost 50 years. While the rest of the world tries to force the Burmese military to return the country to civilian and democratic rule these efforts are thwarted by China in the UN and through China's purchase of commodities and oil from the junta. Without China, the military dictatorship would have fallen long ago. This is something Chinese people should be ashamed of and urge their government to change. But then Chinese citizens have no direct way to influence their governments foreign policies either since they don't have the right to vote for their national leaders. And if Chinese citizens dared to demonstrate their support for the Burmese people I know it would be a matter of minutes before the demonstration was broken up by the Public Security Bureau.

At least in the West when our officials make stupid mistakes we can vote them out of office and change things - like the US will do this fall. China can be proud of its economic development - but that's about all it can be proud of. posted 05/09/2008 at 22:21:53
I was wondering the same thing. Why don't we just drop food aid to the Burmese directly? We enter other countries' airspace for security purposes - why not for humanitarian purposes? And while I agree with the Administration that the Burma (only the junta calls it Myannmar) generals are a rot it is not the best time to poke the generals in the eye with a stick when you are trying to get access to help the citizens the junta doesn't care about. Typical Bush tactics. posted 05/09/2008 at 22:09:10

Liveblogging the North Carolina and Indiana Primaries

When it comes time for me to consider my next job or relocation I'm going to look at whether the state went for Clinton or not. If it did, I'm not going there because if the majority of voters were so stupid as to fall for Clinton's pandering lies I don't want to live there. I want to live only among the wise. posted 05/06/2008 at 19:50:57

Dickipedia: China

I'm no fan of the Chinese government and I think they deserve all the ridicule they get but this parody of Wikipedia borders on racism. Let's not use the "g" word or other disrespectful terms for an ethnic group.

And besides, Taiwan is not a chain of islands in the South China Sea. It's mostly one large island astride the East China Sea and South China Sea. It is a thriving democracy that we like to ignore while we spend $3 trillion trying to create a democracy in Iraq where they don't seem to want one. posted 05/07/2008 at 10:00:53

Will Hillary Repeal the Clinton Gas Tax?

Hillery's pandering on the bogus gas tax holiday is an insult to all of us. What does she take us for? Morons? She knows this is counterproductive - at least if she listened to ALL of the economists that have spoken out on this. She claims that those who are against making our problems wose with her (and McCains) stupid gas tax holiday are elitist. In fact she is the elitist because she assumes we are stupid enough to fall for this lie. Obama has the guts and intelligence to tell us the truth and treat us like adults. posted 05/06/2008 at 10:44:36

Shameful Days: Why Won't The Media Pursue the Pentagon Propaganda Scandal?

The MSM has become so irresponsible that I've stopped watching or listening to most of it. I turn to selected online sources, NPR, independent analysis by Stratfor, and selected MSM news programs such as CBS Sunday morning with Osgood. I also like Atlantic magazine. Either the MSM needs to stop appealing to the lizard brains or thinking people will have to find new sources of quality, unbiased sources that report on what's important.

The MSM lack of attention to the Pentagon story is shameful. posted 04/30/2008 at 19:49:51

Fox News Lincoln-Douglas Graphic Shows Frederick Douglass

Lear on the Heath

I don't depend on the corporate media to tell me about jackson and sharpton - I've suffered through years of their presence on tv news and interview programs. Not all of it could have been taken out of context. I put them in the same category as Carville, OReilly and other blathering idiots. Obama is such a relief - a wise, inspiring, and intelligent leader. posted 04/30/2008 at 00:40:50
Good grief. You make about as much sense as Rev Wright. posted 04/30/2008 at 00:31:16
It seems that Rev Wright has succumbed to the same disease that Rev Jessie Jackson and Rev Al Sharpton did - the addiction of publicity. A side effect of the disease is obnoxious and sometimes childish behavior. The sight of Wright dancing around and acting stupid for the cameras is embarrassing for any human to watch. It is sad that these buffoons are percieved as being leaders in the African-American community. They only prolong the divisions in our society and do nothing to bring us together.

While they may be a problem we have to deal with they aren't as dangerous as McCain's buddy, the wacked-out ultra-conservative armageddon-seeking Rev. Haggee or Hillery Clinton's eagerness to obliterate countries. Obama is the only hope we have for rising above all this nonsense. posted 04/29/2008 at 21:50:35

George McGovern: Still Backing Clinton, But Going Way Off Script

Carville is reprehensible. A real embarrassment for the Democratic Party. posted 04/25/2008 at 19:49:43
Senator McGovern, I campaigned for you when you ran for president. Now would you do me a favor and ask Hillery to stop the negative campaigning? She can't win but she can destroy Obama's chance of winning. If that's her goal it is the ultimate selfishness.

You and your friends need to impress this upon her and let her know how much people hate this. posted 04/25/2008 at 19:47:15

The 23/6 Network News Apology-o-Tron

Let's make sure we differentiate between the Chinese dictatorial government, the citizens of China, and people of Chinese ethnicity. Chinese are no worse, no better than others. The problem comes from the government in Beijing and from a sick culture that has been warped by the communists. Chinese people, including Chinese-Americans, can help the situation by openly denouncing Beijing and showing others that they share the principles of freedom, justice and accountability. posted 04/19/2008 at 20:32:12
I don't care for Cafferty's style of trying to create controversy to boost ratings - so I only see him if someone else has the TV turned to CNN - but, I don't think the Chinese government is in any position to be demanding an apology. In the first place that government doesn't represent the Chinese people - who have had that one-party rule forced on them. Secondly, China should be the first to apologize for invading Tibet in 1949 and subjugating its people ever since. China has so many things they need to be apologizing for that I cannot list them all here. But that doesn't stop Beijing from demanding apologies from other people and from trying to whip up nationalistic hatred among their subjects. Having Cafferty help them do that is unfortunate. posted 04/19/2008 at 20:22:37

Jon Stewart Rips ABC Debate

The correlation between John McCain and supporters that can't spell ("a hero with since") is noticable. posted 04/19/2008 at 20:06:39
ABC did a terrible job so if they are truely proud of their performance it has to be that they care nothing for journalistic reputation and everything about the dollar. I realize media are businesses and they have to make money but if companies in any other business sold shoddy merchandise they'd soon go out of business. So what makes media different? I guess it's the seeming willingness of consumers to continue to let companies like ABC poke them in the eye with a stick and just sit there and take it. posted 04/19/2008 at 20:01:09

State Department warns diplomats of compulsory Iraq duty

I'm offended by Rice taking offense at her diplomats voicing their opinion. Actually, I think it is quite courageous for them to stand up to her. Some diplomats simply don't want to risk their lives for a bad policy or risk leaving their families parentless. Many of them are very brave - and have volunteered to work in a war zone but the ones that quit rather than work in a war zone are no less brave.

I know a lot of diplomats and finding one that supports Bush's foreign policy is hard. ONly the political appointees at the top support the tremendous blunder that is the war in Iraq. Yet, they carry out the policy of the administration as they are sworn to do. posted 04/16/2008 at 09:59:05

It's gotten to the point now where seeing Hillery Clinton on my TV screen makes me almost physically sick. I have to switch channels quickly, just like I do when Bush comes on the screen. It's almost like Clockwork Orange.

I can take normal levels of pandering by politicians but when it gets to the levels that Clinton is dishing it out it brings on a gag reflex.

So now she's told us she is not only willing to dash through a hail of sniper bullets to hug our soldiers but she also enjoys dispatching animals for the fun of it. She's one tough lady, eh?

Disgusting. posted 04/12/2008 at 22:01:03

Bill Maher: Catholics Must Get Up Out Of The Pew And Walk Out Of The Church Forever

Although I wish Maher would be a bit more circumspect in his language I agree with his points. And his does point out something I hadn't thought about, it is incredibly hypocritical for anyone still in the Catholic Church to criticize Obama for staying in his church awaiting his extremist pastor's retirement. Hannity should certainly be ashamed.

I wish politicians and the media would keep their religions to themselves. And I wish people without religions could be elected to office in the US. The results couldn't be any worse than what we've gotten lately with devout believers. posted 03/28/2008 at 21:48:05

China Blasts Dalai Lama, Pelosi on Tibet

Zhuangzhu,

I appreciate your commentary. The reason Americans support the Tibetans is because they have the right to self-determination. If they want a theocracy (which they seem to want) then let them have it. Americans don't want a theocracy - but that's our choice. It's hard to know what Chinese want because real elections and even polls are not allowed in China. Must be a reason for that.

I agree that Falun Gong has some pretty nutty ideas - but they should be able to practice whatever religion they want as long as they don't hurt other people. Frankly, most religions have some pretty nutty ideas. But I support their right to those ideas. posted 03/24/2008 at 11:35:15
The Chinese state propaganda machine has no credibility whatsoever. But they have succeeded in fooling most of their own citizens. Living here in China I can tell you that most of the Han Chinese are thouroughly convinced that Tibet has always been part of Tibet, that Tibetans want to be part of China, and that the Dalai Lama is a warmonger. If you keep people in the dark and feed them bull*&^$ ...

A big thank you to Pelosi for expressing the feelings of support Americans have for the Tibetans. China has no right to Tibet. Tibet belongs to the Tibetans. We need to keep reminding the Chinese that the world will never accept their occupation of Tibet. posted 03/24/2008 at 11:24:01

Freedom to Travel? More on the Audacity and Hypocrisy of Debbie Wasserman Schultz

If you are a Border officer then you know that traveling to Cuba through other countries (without a US Treasury permit which is very hard to get) is illegal. The Bush Admin has gone after Americans who did this and fined them heavily. posted 03/24/2008 at 11:13:54
Clinton made several public appearances in Florida just before the vote - she just didn't call it campaigning - the usual trickery. She agreed not to campaign in Michigan but she put her name on the ballot. Obama obeyed the letter of the agreement and didn't put his name on the ballot. Then, after the fact, Hillety wanted to renig on the agreement and change the rules. More trickery. posted 03/24/2008 at 11:06:36
The State Dept does not own my right to travel. I have a right to a passport - it's not something the gov't can take away from me and remain a legitimate government.

At the same time, I don't think any Congressperson should be allowed dual citizenship. If Wasserman is carrying an Israeli passport she needs to resign from office. When Americans join the Foreign Service they are required to give up dual citizenships. So it should be with our representatives. They need to be 100% American. posted 03/24/2008 at 11:00:26
I disagree with your last point - those few snippits of Wrights loss of control are not right. However, I think you are right about US Foreign policy being hijacked by the pro_israel and anti-Castro Cuban lobbies. Sometimes I wonder where their loyalties lie. Would they sacrifice America for Israel's benefit? Or sacrifice America for a return to rule Cuba?? I have nothing against Israel but it seems like the US has been placed in great harm by its one-sided support of Israel. Yes, Israel is a democracy - but so is Taiwan. You don't see us risking our necks to protect Taiwan against China - so why Israel? posted 03/24/2008 at 10:53:09
One of the most depressing aspects of American politics in the last four decades has been the degree of influence the Florida Cuban right wing has had on our national elections and foreign policy. A relatively small but rich group of refugees have controlled our country's policy toward Cuba, and not to the benefit of our country. Politicians like Wasserman are scared to death to confront the Cuban-American Republican block. To appease the Cuban-Americans our Congress has taken away all American's rights to travel to Cuba. As an American I resent this deeply - not because I feel I must see Cuba but because as an American I do not feel my government has the right to tell me where in the world I can travel or what I can see.

American foreign policy should be in the best interest of Americans and should align with our principles of freedom of the individual. I feel sorry for Cubans and I want them to be free. But taking away fundamental rights of Americans doesn't help anyone. posted 03/24/2008 at 10:37:57

China Issues Most Wanted List of Rioters

Living here in China I can report that the Chinese people have been thouroughly lied to by their government about the situation in Tibet. Unfortunately, most Chinese believe what their government has told them for decades - that Tibet has always been part of China and that the Chinese liberated the Tibetans from an evil Dalai Lama. The Chinese block almost all news stories on the BBC and CNN that are about Tibet. If I search for news on the Internet about Tibet my searches are blocked. Any government that is afraid of its people having more than one side of the story is an illegitimate government. posted 03/21/2008 at 11:10:31
