I was born in 1947 and graduated high school from a small southern Ohio city in 1965. I received a BA in marketing from Ohio State in 1969. I was drafted into the army in 1970, went through combat infantry training, and ended up clerk typist stationed first in Washington DC. and then Heidleberg Germany. Honorably discharged, I entered graduate school at OSU as an economic geography major. While a grad student, I worked as a TA. In addition to OSU, I also attended the University of Americas in Mexico City and American University in Washington DC. I worked briefly for a small import comapny upon completion of college. I then went to work for a small family wholesale company which I ultimately managed for over twenty years. Our company worked with a number of national and large regional grocery chains such as Kroger and Winn Dixie, as well as, a number of smaller chains and independents. With the explosive advent of Wal-Mart as a supermarket outlet, there was a revolution in grocery retailing during the late 1990's. The majority of smaller chains were bought out or closed. Most of the larger independents went out of business; and the larger chains changed from buying on a division level to centralized national purchasing. Smaller wholesale operations such as ours simply had no place in this new market. We shut our business down in 2004; and I took over a small home cleaning business with 16 employees which given the current economic climate has been fairly sucesssful. I have been happily married for 28 years and have two college age children both students at Ohio State. My wife has been a registered nurse for 29 years working in a large hospital newborn intensive care unit. In my younger days I traveled extensively visiting most of the countries in Western Europe, as well as, Japan and the Soviet Union. I am an avid stamp collector and have had a life long interest in economics and Asian history.
