The Uncharted: From Off The Bus to Meet the Press

Jay,
I'm not buying this rambling 'explanation.' One should ask "Is there a story here?" when 'commiting journalism', as you put it. The only way that Obama's remarks could become a story is if they are represented out of context. Keep them in context, where they make sense and wouldn't ruffle feathers, and there's no story. This is simple opportunism at best, and shameful journalism at worst. I'll anticipate seeing Mayhill Fowler on Fox in the coming years as a guest contributor. posted 04/15/2008 at 10:41:35

General Won't Promise More Iraq Pullouts

Dismantle the military? I'm not ready to do that. The world is getting more and more dangerous as time goes on. How about we keep our military, but use it wisely? And in the meantime, concentrate on helping developing countries actually develop, so that there is less reason for aggression against the U.S. and other western powers. posted 04/08/2008 at 09:45:00

Hillary Clinton: I Started Criticizing Iraq War Before Obama

I suppose I'm pretty used to spin at this point. After so many years of it from the Republicans, I take it as business as usual.
What really outrages me is that she does it so badly. I mean, sure, we're basically image-influenced idiots who can't grasp more than three steps of an argument ... but she assumes that we're dumber than THAT. posted 04/06/2008 at 00:18:28

Reid: Clinton, Obama Fight Does "Zero Damage" To Democrats

Maybe Reid can also interpret the national polls for us - you know, the ones that had both Dems ahead of McCain a month ago, and now have them trailing McCain now?
I'm thinking that if Reid's going to tell me all this ugliness between candidates is ok, maybe he also can make a deficit look like a surplus. And then he can read me some bedtime stories. posted 04/04/2008 at 20:06:24

North Carolina Polls: Democratic Primary

23,
I also enjoy going over to Talking Points Memo.

Obama Risks Alienating Clinton Women and Blue-Collar Supporters

Another instance of taking something Obama has said and finding a way to cast it in a negative light. Unlike you cynics, I don't believe that Obama was being condescending when he said that Hill can stay in as long as she wants, any more than I believe that Hill was being underhanded by saying that there's nothing to base the assumption that Obama is a muslim on "as far as I know."
Why are we just looking for things to demonize the other candidate in the same party with? It's not as if there haven't been enough direct attacks between the two up to this point.
If I have to read another article that attempts to counter perceived racial card-playing by the Obama camp with "girl power" on the other side, I'm afraid I might lose my lunch. posted 04/02/2008 at 12:38:18

Why The Hills Makes Me Love My Wife a Little Bit Less

Wonderful.
As it is, I turned to my fiance the other night as she stared, rapt, into the Hills box, and addressed the real drama, the real potentially tragic aspect of the show. As Lauren put-putted along on the back of 'mysterious french guy's' euro-cycle through Paris, I expressed aloud the core of my own sympathy for these characters: "What if they get into a terrible accident before she's ever able to grow her own personality?" posted 03/31/2008 at 22:08:56

The World is Watching and Wants More: Clinton-Obama Race Should Go All the Way

Sounds like a good 'gotcha' moment ... until reflection kicks in.
Who, including those who proposed a mail-in voting program, would really be comfortable with an ad-hoc, seat of your pants mail-in voting program? These things need to be planned carefully over the course of months, if not longer, to ensure that there is no tampering and to make sure that as few people as possible are disenfranchised. It doesn't take a genius to recognize that hurried implementation of a plan can cause more harm than good for all concerned. There simply isn't the logistical apparatus in place for whipping together a ballot-by-mail primary at this point. posted 03/30/2008 at 23:57:34
Ummmm, don't FL and MI need to take some responsibility here? If Dean's at fault, it's only because he's backing down on enforcing the rules that these states broke.
As well, don't you think that abandoning your party out of frustration is a disgrace? I think that deep down, most Hillary (or Obama) supporters are better than that. posted 03/30/2008 at 23:46:02

Obama's Anger--Redux

Such attempts as these to exercise our (by 'our' I mean 'we white folks') imagination and to attempt to consider what being a minority - particularly an african american - is like are what we need in order to have improved discussions of race. And it's ironic to think that labeling blacks as 'intellectually lazy' comes from an intellectual laziness on the part of those standing in judgment ... without understanding. Thanks very much for an honest and sympathetic article. posted 03/28/2008 at 23:36:05

Time Is Not On Our Side

John,
Your lack of cynicism is impressive, especially with respect to the power that the public can have if we exercise our ability to contact media outlets, our representatives in congress, and each other. Between Obama's message of hope and your insistence on the efficacy of democratic channels, I'm moving away from my cynical stance in spite of myself.
A problem for me, however: I'm in Connecticut, home of Lieberman. Something tells me that voices in my state aren't going to go as far as those in other blue states.
One last note: you mention the fact that Iraq is becoming a tragedy. As I teach ancient philosophy and classics here, I'm reminded of the parallel between the Bush administration and Oedipus - Oedipus who believed that he could steer his own destiny because of his cleverness, but who was undone precisely because destiny was steering him.

Thanks again for another encouraging and insightful piece. posted 03/29/2008 at 16:15:59

The Fear Factor

Simon, the operative phrase in your post is 'fighting between parties'. Ill-will and rancor between parties is what we expect, but not within a political party; this is the issue. Hillary's ugly strategy is not just bad for her democratic opponent, it's bad for both of them, and by implication, bad for the rest of us democrats. And while you say that fighting was worse in the past, we're in the Youtube generation now, which makes it much easier to replay every little jab, misstep, outright lie, and allows the damage to fester. Now more than ever - and I think you'd agree - it's necessary to do what we can to correct the fallout from Bush policies, and that won't happen if we don't achieve unity and healing within the democratic party very soon. posted 03/28/2008 at 23:45:23

Clinton Camp: Obama Falsely Claims He Doesn't Take Oil Money

A minor memory gaffe? Tell me, please, whether you would misremember being shot at. Our campaign is about promoting Hillary Clinton - not tearing down any other candidate. Our number one priority is having the strongest Democratic candidate to take back the White House in November."

Erica,
I have to thank you for this entry. Barack Obama's Integrity

Malcolm,
If you're going to take the position that Obama should support a re-vote in FL and MI, I'd like to hear you also address those factors that seem to make a re-vote a bad idea according to officials in both states, i.e., it's logistically, financially impossible, damaging to local elections in MI already scheduled, unfair to many democratic voters in MI who chose to vote in the republican primary that would count, and so on.
Making it seem like the re-vote depends somehow on Obama's support - as if there were any chance at all that the re-votes would take place in any case - seems to me like scapegoating ... and in bad faith, to boot. posted 03/21/2008 at 12:46:28
