6 Tips For Getting Yourself To Do Something You Don't Want To Do

These are pretty good tips but I have to question the one about "protecting yourself from interruptions." That's a dead giveaway that the author does not work in the typical corporate setting. (Another is the suggestion about reducing work stress that begins with "Go into your office, close the door and ...." as though 99% of us don't work in cubicles.)

For most of us, there is no escape from interruptions. If you don't answer your phone, you get an email. If you don't respond to the email immediately, an Instant Message pops up on your screen. If you don't IM back, the request is escalated to your manager, who wants to know why you aren't more responsive.

My team mates and I are all college educated professionals, some of us with graduate degrees, but as far as being able to concentrate and shield ourselves from constant interruption we might as well be taking hamburger orders at the drive through window. posted 05/08/2008 at 11:27:29

Benedict in America: The Man Show

What a lot of rubbishy nonsense. Any woman who remains in the Catholic church (or 99% of the world's organized religions for that matter) and then complains about the treatment she receives is pretty much in the same position as a black person who joins the KKK and is surprised by a lack of respect.

Contempt for women and a desire to keep them firmly in their place as society's servant class is part and parcel of traditional religion. Get over it or get out. posted 04/23/2008 at 11:51:06

Power To The Pope-ful

The only emotion this visit stirs in me a mixture of boredom and irritation. Why millions of our tax dollars are being spent so George Bush can preen around having his picture taken with a man in a dress eludes me completely. If the pope wants to lecture us on morality and hector women into taking their God given place as second-class citizens, he can do it on his own dime. posted 04/21/2008 at 11:27:21

Stephanopoulos Once Criticized The Tactics He Put To Use In Debate

I was surprised to read in other posts that people were "disappointed" in Georgie S. How could any one not have recognized him years ago as a snot-nosed hustler on the make? Apparently not even a particularly bright snot-nosed hustler on the make, based on widespread reaction to his latest scam. posted 04/18/2008 at 13:40:15

Staying Grounded

I can't begin to imagine flying in 2008 unless you have absolutely no alternative. We're flying from Denver CO to Syracuse NY this summer for a wedding and I've been dreading it for months.

The last time we made this trip, it took 22 hours after spending the night with no luggage in a dumpy hotel in Philadelphia as the guests of U.S. Air.

After this trip, I sincerely hope it will be a long time before we're dragooned onto an airplane again. posted 04/14/2008 at 12:59:41

American Cancels 1,000 More Flights, Strands Thousands

We were watching a documentary on the tube earlier this week, all about high speed trains and the amazing improvements that have been made in speed and comfort over the past five years. We saw German passengers sitting in spacious comfort on trains with actual dining and club cars, moving swiftly to their destination.

Gosh, can we hope that someday America will enjoy these modern marvels? Oh, wait. We can't even keep our highways and bridges in repair or our airplanes from falling out of the sky, much less come up with new transportation alternatives. posted 04/09/2008 at 13:02:18

Priscilla, I'm Sorry About Your Face

Dave Barry claims Cher has had so much plastic surgery done, for the sake of convenience all her major body parts are attached with Velcro.

For Those Times When You'd Rather Not Eat, Drink, or Breathe

Actually, these conditions have only been around for the last 15 years or so. There was a time in the memory of living Americans (me, for example) when flying was actually rather pleasant, even back there in coach. Before deregulation air fares were indeed higher when adjusted for inflation. But you were hardly ever bumped, flight cancellations were rare except for weather reasons and you got fed, sometimes rather well. Airline employees actually seemed glad to see you, if you can imagine.

One of my favorite flying experiences was in the mid-1970's. My flight from Atlanta to Los Angeles was cancelled because of mechanical problems. The airline (Delta?) rounded up another plane and a fresh crew to get us on our way less than three hours after scheduled take off. The plane was about one-third full so we all got two or three seats to ourselves. The flight attendants were lavish with food and free drinks for everyone. We had a lot of fun.

Let's picture this same scenerio today. It's hard to work out all the gruesome details but we know "fun" wouldn't be part of it. posted 03/27/2008 at 12:50:42
