Republicans Who Just Don't Get It

The media's use of the word 'conservative' to describe these jerks baffles me. This gang is anything but conservative.

Conservatives are fiscally responsible, are wary of war and the military-industrial complex, believe in the separation of church and state and small government, and are big fans of the Constitution and the rule of law.

The modern GOP supports none of these principles. These so-called conservatives instead are un-American, big government, authoritarian radicals. Their federal government is an instrument that efficiently transfers the nation's treasure to our corporate masters and spies on the prols to keep them in line. Their insane (there's no other word for it) policies have put the nation and freedom on life support.

You may call them (and their Democratic enablers) traitors or protofascists, but whatever you do don't call them conservatives. posted 05/14/2008 at 15:13:53

Humanitarian disaster in New Orleans. No insurance for poor kids. GI Bill. Walter Reed. Mothers' Day resolution. Corporate welfare. Worst. President. Ever.

Dandy legacy, I think. It's no wonder the GOP brand is fading. Yet Republican leaders remain clueless as to the reasons why. Continue the insanity, Boehner. Amazing. posted 05/14/2008 at 16:25:34

In Defense of Being Educated

This post is somewhat off the mark.

While it is true that college graduates as a rule probably are more intelligent than those who did not attend college, it is not true that the latter as a group suffers from a lack of intelligence. It also does not necessarily follow that all college grads (e.g. Junior) are smarter than those without degrees. It also does not necessarily mean that those without degrees are less well educated than those with; it just means they have less formal education.

The problem voters I think we are talking about here are those who routinely vote against their economic self interest out of fear. These are the voters who rely on the gut and not the head. These voters can be stupid but not necessarily so. These are the same insecure voters the Republicans have deployed so successfully since the '50s, with the boogy men being in turn Commies, black Americans, antiwar activists, hippies, liberals, Mexicans, gay Americans, terrorists, the French, education, intelligence and black Americans again.

Sadly they are still with us (see the 2000 and 2004 elections, West Virginia today and Kentucky next week) and they are a pox on the body politic. This is not a group whose support I personally would tout with pride, as Sen Clinton has done.

(Full disclosure: I am a native of southern Appalachia.)

He doesn't lead, in a city that desperately needs leadership; instead he travels--he says it's his calling. (Dunno why he sought re-election; he's been fervently uninterested in the post since the vote.) He claimed he's a CPA, but that claim was a lie. The lie fooled his former employer, Cox Communications, where he was an affirmative action hire, but it was exposed when he entered public life. I can't think of an accomplishment since Katrina. I take that back; he landed a personal contract for a Home Depot under construction in the city and he did urge turning the CBD into a casino district. Did I mention lubricious? Shall I go on? The Best Barbecue In America

I'm here to cite and correct serious omissions in this story.

I'm a native Tennessean, altho I've lived in Louisiana for years now, and I know barbecue. My two absolutely most favorite barbecue restaurants in the South are at opposite ends of the state. And neither is on this list.

In the east is Ridgewood, outside Bluff City in the Tri-Cities area on U.S. 19E. It specializes in 'wet' barbecue. I love best their pulled-pork sandwiches, served on a bun with home-made sauce and cole slaw. Baked beans there are mighty fine too. Customers can purchase sauce, which is bottled, to enjoy at home. Five hundred miles west is Renezvous in Memphis, hard by the Peabody Hotel. The restaurant has been run by the same family for three, maybe four, generations. It specializes in 'dry' barbecue. My favorite is the pork ribs, peppered with bunch of their secret ingredients. Excellent with beer. MMMMM.

These restaurants and their tasty fare are not new attactions for me. I've been enjoying both more more than 40 years now and hope to continue enjoying them as long as I have teeth in my head.

I therefore recommend ignoring this story and heading straight to Tennessee, whichever end is convenient to you. posted 04/25/2008 at 21:26:13

I haven't been contacted by this organization but in the unlikely event that it does get in touch I'll take the opportuntity to tell them that, because of BSA's ugly discriminatory policies, I no longer support the organization, morally or financially. Scouting was delightful back in the day (the late 1950s and early 1960s) , but I'm grateful that at the time I was blissfully ignorant of BSA's sexual agenda. I thought the word 'straight' in the Scout oath meant 'honest'. After all, I was just a kid, ya know.

Why Being Pro-McCain is Anti-Israel

Mr Loewe:

I am confused. Or maybe you are. McBomb is Israel's future go-to guy.

The Iraq war and the upcoming one on Iran are among other things proxy wars for Israel. And they are wildly supported by Israelis and their senator in Congress, Lieberman. When we take out Iran for Israel it can play the role of innocent bystander. Meanwhile pan-Arab fury will be directed at us, not at Israel. Seems to be a winner for Israel.

Plus, not only do we fight Irael's wars, but we send the country billions of dollars annually so it can persecute Palestinians or periodically bomb Syria or invade Lebanon or otherwise further destablize the region. Thus Israel has all the benefits of a 51st state without having to pay U.S. taxes (ordinary Americans do that for them). Things are great in Israel. I'm confused as to why you want to halt the gravy train? While Obama probably won't have the courage to stop it, McBomb enthusiastically supports it. He's Israel's man. posted 04/21/2008 at 15:53:36

Oops! I forgot; they have the Feed, um, Fed. posted 04/17/2008 at 12:11:35

ABC Hosts Heckled After Debate: "The Crowd Is Turning On Me"

What I was looking for, and sadly failed to see, was both Obama and Clinton standing up to the moderators and refusing to answer their content-free questions. posted 04/17/2008 at 16:20:30

Why Hillary Clinton's Slash-and-Burn Politics May Hurt Her More Than Obama

You obviously love the role of provacateur (and the sound of your own voice). Hence the non sequitur posting and repostings. Instead of continuing your off-topic rants I suggest you back off the keyboy awhile, give it a rest and read Mr Creamer's column. It's edifying. You might even learn something. Plus you then will be able to post on the subject at hand. It's win win for all of us. posted 04/15/2008 at 17:41:44

The Uncharted: From Off The Bus to Meet the Press

Obama can only fault himself. By speaking the truth he broke the first and most import rule of American politics. And as punishment the MSM is chasing him to the gates of hell. posted 04/15/2008 at 17:55:54

Why Is AA's MD-80 Still In Use?

The MD 80 is why I fly so infrequently on AA out of New Orleans. It is the most claustrophobic plane on the ground or in the air. If you like cigar tubes, you love the MD 80. posted 04/11/2008 at 18:44:38

AP Poll: Bush Public Approval at New Low

The Vietnam conflict actually began in the the 1950s when colonial France occupied the nation. They quickly (and wisely) cut their losses and departed for the mother country. At which time the U.S. stepped in, in the name of fighting the Red Menace. Much later, in 1964, the Tonkin 'incident' was used as an excuse (see the Tonkin Resolution) by Congress and the Johnson administration to escalate America's war against North Vietnam and the Viet Cong. That's also when American deaths began to escalate. posted 04/11/2008 at 15:17:21
