Tennessee GOP Attacks Michelle Obama, Obama Camp Hits Back

You're too late. Most of the electorate is no longer swayed by your sound bite arguments that attempt to put people in narrow boxes based on a one tiny statement. Oh, there's still a small segment that will vote against its own interests in order to validate their ignorance. But blind patriotism has meant the end of the American Dream for many of the coveted "hard-working Americans," and they are actually start to seek intellligent answers instead hate-filled smears and rhetoric. posted 05/16/2008 at 08:14:45

Bush Compares Obama To Nazi Appeasers

Chris Matthews just took some radio jock windbag to the back of the toolshed for not knowing the difference between talks and appeasement. Matthews kept asking him what Chamberlain did that was so wrong and the guy just kept screaming right-,wing talking points about appeasement.. Aftter several minutes of this, Matthews finally told him flat out that he clearly did not know, and explained to him that Chamberlain gave Hitler a part of Czechoslovakia, and THAT was the appeasement, not the mere fact that they talked. But the jock clearly talks so fast and loud to cover up for how little he knows. posted 05/15/2008 at 18:17:39

NYT's Front Page Obama Profile: "The Ultimate Pragmatist"

Aside what everyone else has said, this article welll illustrates that Obama doesn't merely react to situations as they happen but is always looking forward, seeking alliances, finding concensus. His demeanor during this campaign shows just this disposition as well. He didn't match Hillary's brute tactics with brute tactics not just because he's a decent person, but because such sniping would get in the way of the bigger picture - building a broad alliance to win the White House and change the way this country works. Even his major difference with Hillary - his opposition to the war - was based on a view to the long term, not simple, immediate political expediency. Where Hillary reacted, Obama acted. In other words, he behaved like a leader while she was simply being a follower. Even now, while Hillary divides the electorate along racial llines, Obama's moved far past her, leading a nationwide registration drive with eyes on November. posted 05/11/2008 at 19:53:10

Obama Vice President Picks: Who Are The Frontrunners?

Richardson makes the most sense by far. He's been nominated for what, about four nobel peace prizes for his foreign policy initiatives and work, he and Obama seem to have struck up a true friendship that would come across well in campaigning, and he could appeal to the Hispanic vote. Also, he's not going to do anything on the campaign trail that would be a distraction (ala Bill Clinton), and he has the experience that could sway many voters who don''t think Obama has enough. Any time I saw a Hilary supporter interviewed on the campaign who seemed brighter than Nash McCabe, they time after time saod they were voting for her because of her experience. At least that''s a legitimate concern. Richardson will fill that requirement, with aplomb. posted 05/10/2008 at 18:17:31

Cindy McCain: I Will Never Release My Tax Returns

No one's saying the obvious. Yes, in part she doesn't want to release the returns because of the implications regarding her subsidizing of her husband's campaign. But the bigger matter is, she probably has her $100 million sheltered in ways that prevents her gains from being taxed more than a paltry amount, while average Americans pay loads of taxes on income gained through working to fund the war her husband's so fond of - and THAT's what the McCains don't want us to know. posted 05/08/2008 at 22:45:32

Clinton: Obama Not Winning Over "Hard-Working Americans, White Americans"

What's been missing from this whole argument by the MSM is Obama's approval rating by whites who are are quite familiar with him. He has an astounding 70 percent approval rating in Illinois, and won the Wisconsin primary by 17 percent, largely on the basis of white votes. Much of Wisconsin gets Illinois media, and people have been following him for many years there, just as in northwestern Indiana. Once the Democratic Party officially makes Obama the nominee, he'll have no trouble winning over the broad white middle class. To know him is to like him. posted 05/10/2008 at 18:29:14
Exactly. People went wild when Obama said some people cling to guns and religion in tough times, but somehow it's OK for Clinton to directly appeal to hard-working WHITE Americans - vs what, all those minority slobs? How more blatantly racist could she be? If challenged, of course, she'll act all indignant the her remarks are being construed to single out whites as being hard working. But there she goes again, dividing an already divided country - white hard-working Americans with low education (I guess the educated don't work hard to her mind), beer drinkers, gun toters, elitists - and those are just her breakout of the white electorate! Her comments do help explain her chameleon nature, as she views America not as as melting pot but as separate and removed interest groups to be pandered to with gimmicks. posted 05/08/2008 at 23:45:03

Exit Polls: Limbaugh Effect Seems To Rear Its Head

Now let's just for a moment take Limbaugh at his word and believe he intended for Obama to be the nominee all along. That means he was giving marching orders to his flock under false pretenses, telling them to vote for Hillary because she'd be the weaker candidate. What Limbaugh is really saying is that he has little respect for his own followers and will use them to meet his own ends...if he was really trying to manipulate an Obama win as he claims. posted 05/07/2008 at 22:03:39

Superdelegates, are you paying attention? These people are in the wrong party. If not, then both the Democrats and the Republicans, with the exception of Obama, talk like 10 cent evangelists to get votes on the cheap while the country falls further into the abyss. All this while calling intelligent economists "elitists" for telling the truth about suspending the gas tax - meant to once again trivialize the informed and educated to appeal to the feeble-minded. Clinton Gas Tax Holiday: Hillary Attacks Economists

Oh please. Neither John F. Kennedy nor Franklin Roosevelt would be able to get elected based on this new talking point of the Hillary machine. And that's all it is. Kennedy sailed, refused to kiss babies and wear funny hats for photo ops, always dressed in dashing clothes, grew up on a compound on the Cape, and never carried cash. Roosevelt smoked cigarettes using a holder, wore dresses as a very young boy, was known to disparage the poor in private conversation, and was considered a prissy at his private prep school. This is tripe being spread by Obama's opponents by a compliant press. posted 05/04/2008 at 22:10:03
You've echoed my sentiments. Will anyone ask her how she squares the circle of slamming the educated as "elite" while claiming she wants to improve the nation's educational system? To do what? Produce more dastardly elites? Should she ultimately prevail, it will be by catering to the same easily manipulated sort sso coveted by the Republicans. And her power will reside in keeping the nation pacified with appeals to fear and prejuduces. She'll win, the nation will continue to lose, and the educated will have a home in neither party. Smart guys need not apply. posted 05/04/2008 at 21:59:27

Once again, Hillary's speaking like a died in the wool Republican and ALL Democrats should call her bluff. Just like the pundit Republican Joe Scarborough, she'd condescendingly asserting that, the little people just salivate at the thought of 30 more bucks and that the 'elite' economists (vs the incompetent ore mediorcre ones she would prefer to seek advice from I presume?) just don't understand "how much this would mean to them." How insulting could these people get? All we need is 30 bucks and yee haw. We'll be as happy as a rabbit in a turnip patch. Do they even know that most middle class Americans are educated (be it at a college or a trade school), are very proud, work terribly hard, and don't need to be patronized with half-backed schemes that they think we're incapable of seeing through. Hillary lost my vote when, like Bush, she started talking to the electorate as if they are all moronic, easily manipulated simpletons. And while we're on the subject of "elite." She sent Chelsea to a very elite college, Stanford. If she's so anti-elite, why didn't she just send her to the lcoal junior college? And when did mediocrity become the national standard for choosing leaders?. posted 05/04/2008 at 19:39:46

Faulty Wiring Killing GI's In Iraq

Why are you posting here? Please, go tell McCain, Bush, Rush...whoever it is you support to say five soldiers electrocuted as a result of the negligence of the government they were fighting for is a non-issue. (I've read the actual total is 13 by the way, but I'm sure that's no concern to you.) I'm beginning to get it. You guys are so fond of war because you place so little value on the life of a U.S. soldier. Please do us a favor. Stop pulling "support our troops" out of your hat anytime anyone challenges the validity of this endless war. Better yet, have them tell the heartbroken members of their families that they are somehow filled with hate if they think that this is "an issue." If this is what your side believes, be proud of it and have your mouthpieces proclaim it for all the world to hear. posted 05/03/2008 at 19:40:39
I first read about this a few weeks ago in the New York Times, buried on about page 10 or so, and wondered why in the world this wasn't a major story and why there was no immediate follow-up. That this is an unspeakable tragedy goes without saying but it goes beyond that. At the very least someone needs to be held accountable for negligence, dereliction of duty and manslaughter. Support our troops? Good, innocent men trying to do right for their country were horribly served by that country. I don't have any idea how their families can even go on. This did not have to happen. Lives full of promise were destroyed, and then, the government TRIED TO BLAME THIS VICTIMS! And yes I am shouting. When did our government deem life to be so cheap? There need to be answers. There needs to be justice. posted 05/03/2008 at 19:24:28

The Question of Hillary Clinton's Guilt-By-Association Tactics

"An honest broker in world affairs."

Thank you for this. From the start I was impressed by Obama because he was the only candidate stressing the importance of restoring America's stature among the nations of the world. I consider this to be paramount and believe that Obama's emphasis on this instead of on matters of trivia and sound bites means he has the insight and perspective needed to be a great president o the United States. He thinks big, and I like that. posted 05/02/2008 at 23:10:12
My point is that Hillary has known Obama long enough to know that he's not a wild-eyed radical, he's not a Muslim, he's not a racist, he's not unpatriotic, and he's not uppity. Yet she has campaigned that he is all of these knowing full well she's intentionally misleading the electorate for votes - just as Bush pilloried his opponents for votes. it's not enough for her to defeat Obama; she needs to destroy him. Conversely, Obama knows that Hillary is not a raving, leftist Communist who supports murderers despite past "associations" and has thus chosen not to attack her in this manner. I and many others who are tired of politicians assuming we're simpletons and appealing to our fears and prejudices for votes find Obama refreshing and fear that because Hillary has chosen to campaign like Bush, she will govern like Bush and attempt to destroy anyone she perceives to be getting in her way. posted 05/02/2008 at 23:04:27
This difference in their two approaches I suspect has much to do with their reasons for running. Because Obama refuses to dig for slime despite the numerous opportunities, he's shown he means it when he says he wants to become president to change the way this country is governed and seek a common ground. Clinton's damn Obama, damn the party approach means two things: she's getting even for perceived past abuses against her, and she's seeking the presidency more for the power than to govern. posted 05/02/2008 at 22:07:32

The True McCain Health Plan: Wealth Transfer From Voters to Corporations

Has anyone pointed out yet that, if you can't get insured by private insurers if you get really, really sick, then it's not INSURANCE? What McCain is really proposing is no more than an expensive medical discount card to use should you get a slight fever. I didn't think anyone could make the U.S. system of health care worse than it is. But that is what McCain's proposal would do. Not only that, but current private policies require you to remember every doctor visit you've made for up 10 years ,under threat of rescission should you suddenly be struck with cancer and the insurance company sets about to find reason to deny coverage and discovers you failed to reveal you once sought treatment for a backache. To conclude, you'd only be "insured" until you got sick. Then you'd be "pooled." posted 05/01/2008 at 22:09:57

DNC Chairman Under Bill Clinton: Unite Behind Obama

It's great to see people of integrity coming forward in support of Obama. The media are bound and determined to hand us another pres who's "fun to have a beer with" with its constant portrayal of an "elite" Obama., which brings us an important point. When did "elite" become a perjorative? That very premise is seriously flawed. In today's environment, neither John F. Kennedy nor Franklin Roosevelt could get elected because neither abandoned their intelligence, grace, polish or style to appeal to a cartoonish caricature of the middle class. (And I can only imagine the snide remarks they'd be making about Jackie.) There was a time when we wanted a president who displayed class and style and who was without doubt smarter than we are. Obama, of course, is way too much of a gentleman, and really does want to change the way Washington works, so he won't bring up all the scandals that were rampant throughout the Clinton years in the White House. But she, of course, will stop at nothing and has no shame or guilt. But let's just vision for a moment that with Hillary's and the media's substantial assistance, Obama's brought down and she wins. Brian Williams Decries The NYT, Praises Peggy Noonan

The NY Times Sunday Style section has read like a parody for as long as I can remember. And yes, the boxed wedding stories area hoot, full of silliness about people full of themselves. But as far as Peggy Noonan goes, this was the woman who sat with Chris Matthews saying Bush did well in debates against both Kerry and Gore, and clalmed he even beat Gore because Gore "sighed" after Bush gave one dreadful bumbling performance after another and clearly revealed his low level of curiosity and knowledge. I find her smug, self-impressed manner to be insufferable, and I agree with other posters that there's a difference between Americana and the true American experience. The beauty of the American experience is that there is no singular American experience but rather a collection of stories as unique as the people that tell them. I find it triumphant that the composer of some of the most American music ever made, Aaron Copeland, was not a cowboy, rancher, blueblood, or some other Americana stereotype but a gay Russian Jew. That's affirming, and that's what makes America great. posted 04/28/2008 at 22:42:12

First a candidate (Obama today, in the past Kerry, Dukakis) speaks to the issues and tries to move our country forward. Those who fear progress because the status quo serves them quite well (Hillary, the Repubs, and now the MSM) smear them, and if they "take the bait" and fight back, they're considered no longer above the norm, and if they don't they're pilloried as weak. Hillary Clinton On Olbermann: Laughs Off 'Unholy Alliance' With Democratic Antagonist Scaife

Hillary's performance on Olbermann last night solidified my reasons for not voting for her. Just like Bush, she's playing the fear card to win votes. Throughout her campaign she's borrowed the tactics of the Republicans - the right wing ones at that - which tells me she'll govern in the divisive, flush with lobbyist money, manner of the Bush administration. Moreover, as a middle class woman, I'm insulted by her portrayal of me as a whiskey swiggin, gun tottin simpleton who believes flag pins are the height of patriotism (she could have pointed out in the debate that she wasn't wearing one either, just as Obama was gracious to her about Bosnia. But graciousness isn't a part of her makeup). posted 04/22/2008 at 08:20:28

Pat Buchanan just said that he was "astonished" there was no follow-up questioning at last week's debate about Hillary's talk of a nuclear umbrella over all our allies in the Middle East, not just Israel. Why in the world did he think that the mention of a new policy with implications for nuclear war would have warranted a follow-up at that debate? That was reserved for pressing questions about flag pins (even chased down a NY Times-quoted woman to further that major issue of concern) and Rev. Wright. I quess surveying, say, teachers, students (of voting age), the unemployed, truck drivers being hit hard by gas prices, small business men and women, service workers, what assembly line workers that are left there, farmers - demographics that matter, would have been too taxing for the networks. Better to continue promoting the candidate who's the most fun to have a beer with, since the one we have in office now gave brought our country to its current, glorious state of war without and a shattered economy. You're right. And there is also a difference between a tough and a degrading question. ABC's debate was an attempt to degrade Obama and by so doing the network debased the entire electoral process. And even when being denigrated apparently for the sake of ratings, according to ABC, Obama remained a gentleman and refuse to personally attack Hillary (I suspect to the disappointment of Steph and Charlie), and articulated quite well that this IS the politics people who see war without end and declining neighborhoods and paychecks are sick of. posted 04/21/2008 at 06:29:24

Jon Stewart Rips ABC Debate

Several years ago, Eric Michael Dyson wrote a very insightful book about Martin Luther King entitled, "I May Not Get There With You." It's underlying point was that those who try to canonize King miss the point. He argues that King achieved greatest not because he was perfect in every way; he wasn't. Rather, he used his talents well. He says he was a normal man with faults and frailties and states that the good news is the fact that he was human. All this leads him to conclude that we are all therefore capable of greatness and of changing the world for the better if we use what we have effectively. We don't need to be saints to change the world for the better. Finally, he says to believe otherwise and paint our heroes as being superhuman, we make judgments based on flawed critieria and feel we ourselves can't really make a difference. When Stephanopolous tries to justify his abysmal performance on the basis of seeking out the character of the candidates, we'd be wise the take Dyson's words to heart. King, JFK, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Oscar Shindler, - all exhibited human flaws that would deem them unworthy of leading according the the current crop of "journalists." posted 04/19/2008 at 16:34:57

Since when does the MSM carry water for the Republicans? Yes, cof ourse all the sleazy Republican surrogates will attack Obama, just like the Clintons have from Day One. Good God, from the get go he was accused of being unfit by the Clinton camp because he admitted he sometimes used drugs in his youth. And Bill Clinton said we'd be "rolling the dice" to vote for him. And so it went. But we expect more from so-called journalists. We thought they knew the difference between a tough question (How will you achieve universal health care if insurance is still being provided by corporations with a profit motive who might continue to find ways not to pay?) and a sleazy question (basically, will you take responsibility for the sins of all associates ever encountered?) or a stupid question (does Rev. There is a possible upside here. Anyone involved in sports knows that the worst thing you can do before the big game against your greatest rival is to diss them, lay on the swagger, and try to defeat them before the competition. The end result is your behavior energizes your opponent and their fans and you end up being behind before you've begun. Just look at the outcry EVERYWHERE today. People were insulted, their intelligence was demeaned, and they recognized a hatchet job when they saw one. Obama was pronounced guilty before proven innocent from the get go. Bill Clinton Suggests Young Voters Too Easily Fooled

What's left but to criticize Democratic voters themselves for Hillary's failure to capture the nomination in a landslide victory in February? They criticized Obama's evoking the name of Democrat John F.Kennedy as someone else who was criticized as being a dreamer for saying we'd put a man on the moon in 10 years.
Didn't work. They slammed fellow Democrat Bill Richardson for exercising his right to endorse the candidate of his choice rather than following in lock step with old politics and endorsing Hillary, Didn't work. Hillary said Gore and Kerry didn't win because they were elitist (despite Gore's capturing the popular vote) - doesn't seem to have worked. So all they can do now is attack rank and file Democrats themselves - especially young people who may have just discovered the party thanks to Obama. More important to them than a newly reinvigorated party with fresh ideas and a new vision is that the party remained embroiled in the sniping, carping politics of old so that the old power brokers can stay firmly in place and keep the country in its current state. posted 04/16/2008 at 07:41:56

"But Senator Obama's words are the headline. Go figure?"

What's ironic is that, even regarding people Obama mentioned, like the ani-immigration types, Obama gave them a pass. Contrary to the media's - aka Hillary's - interpretation, he said those beliefs stem not from bigotry but from economic frustration and a sense of hopelessness. On a personal level, throughout my life people would grumble about the economy. But this time it's different. I've heard person after person - in both white and blue collar jobs - say, "I'm scared." Few have been unscathed by the greed and gross incompetence of the Republicans and Bush. If their kids are going to college they're finding out they may not be able to find loans.. If they need a new roof or furnace, better get out the charge card, because HELOCs are being frozen. If you're a small business owner whose pay is erratic and you need your HELOC for temporary padding, good luck. And yet are any of the masters of this debacle in jail or loosing their shirts? Of course not. Their greed has been rewarded with lives of vulgar excess, unapologetic as they bask in luxury on money that was earned by but not given to those how work long and hard to produce the goods and services that keep this country running. Remember, Pennsylvania is a party-only primary - no crossover voting. Isn't most of the virulently anti-immigration and NRA population solid Republican territory? My point is, while this topic may be interesting, those most likely to be offended by Obama's words and so easily prone to misinterpret them are probably not voting for a Democrat regardless. Does Obama Transcend Race?

I'm sadly struck by this article by how perfect a president George W. Bush has been for the current state of the nation. Here, in Obama, we have a candidate who's highly accomplished, managed to master the thorny politics of Chicago - South Side no less, former President of the Harvard Law Review, inspirational in a way we haven't seen for decades, thoughtful, and poised and yet he has to keep proving not only himself tp us but anyone he's ever known as well. Bush, meanwhile, was given pass after pass when he could barely utter an unscripted sentence, often became petulant when his lack of knowledge was exposed, would only answer questions from "friendly" crowds, and surrounded himself with the likes of Rove. But, certainly he wore a flap lapel, thought the search for WMDs was a great subject for a home video - such a kidder, and was fun to have a beer with, and the media asked for nothing more. He was their guy. Bush had to transcend nothing (and believe me, he didn't), but no ladder is high enough for Obama. Guts is re-enlisting for another tour of a war that should never have been waged because you don't want to leave your buddies behind. Guts is arriving home from the war with a limb missing knowing you are going to have to struggle to overcome your handicap each day for the rest of your life, but getting up each morning and giving it a go. Of course, as with Iraq, many other experts warned that no-interest, no-downpayment, no-income-verification mortgages were, in fact, doomed to fail and spoke out against them and in favor of tighter regulation, but as long as the Bush administration could use the housing boom as evidence of a great economy it didn't matter that it truly was a "house" of cards, and the wise were ignored. Hillary's Approval Rating Plummets In NBC/WSJ Poll

The founding fathers were right. Church and state are best kept separate. Hillary can't succeed on her own merits, as evidenced by her untruth (nobody lies anymore) about Bosnia, she can't succeed by criticizing Obama, so she has to go after his church.

Note: Today's NY Times contains a poignant letter from a soldier who helped secure that airfield he landed on a year or so prior. He says it was one of the triumphs of the Bosnia campaign. She would merely float into Super Tuesday with the vague claim of experience and be annointed. Then someone had the audacity so have an idea and speak in uplifting, inspirational tone to all Americans, and treat us as grownups in the process (we'd forgotten what that was like), and challenged her to have something so say. Instead of meeting or exceeding that challenge, she by and large chose the Rove path of innuendo, questioning of her opponent's patriotism, and none, yes, lies (turns out she told the Bosnia tale more than once. Lots of misspeaking goin on). posted 03/26/2008 at 07:42:52

He gave us a clear choice. We can elect not to vote for Obama because he refused to disown Wright, or we can accept his explanation and vote for him. He told us the truth and is letting us decide. Clinton, on the other hand, was caught making up a story - HER words - that has been proven to be untrue, in an effort to show us how experienced she is. Her response? What's interesting is that the pundits always talk about the demise of SS because soon, retirees will far outnumber workers putting money into SS. But they never address the obvious in reverse - that, what that means is, for the last 30-40 years far MORE people have been contributing than have been using SS. WHERE DID ALL THE MONEY GO? Morning Shows Snipe At Clinton Over Bosnia Remarks

I'm amused by the notion that she "misspoke." A misspeak would her answering "yes" to a question about whether she was near enemy fire in Bosnia. Clinton spun a narrative complete with details, and all-knowing laugh and self-satisfaction. Folks, it was fiction - she made it up, and worse, told the tale quite convincingly with apparently no tinge of conscience. Obama had to account for his minister's words and thus spend two or three days crafting, himself, a historic speech. Clinton's response to being questioned on HER OWN words was to, again, insult the electorate by dismissing her fantaasy as a misspeak. I think we've been given a clear indication to how both would respond to the inevitable day to day eruptions in the White House. One would communicate honestly with us as adults, the other would brush us off as if our concerns were silly and unfounded. posted 03/25/2008 at 12:54:41

Watch: Anderson Cooper Asks James Carville, "Dude, Aren't You Mr. Washington?"

What we all have to remember is that Carville is one of the major architects of the type of politics that helped to lead us to where we are today. The micro-polling, focus groups and campaignng on the basis revealing only what you need to in order to win - all Carville. His "It's the economy, stupid," is still being hailed as political genius, when in truth it shows contempt for anyone involved in the campaign who might believe other issues are important to the electorate too. What it said to other staffers was, don't even think of offering other ideas because I've already branded you stupid for doing so. Carville's brand of politics purposely stifles communication instead of opening up the door to new ideas and critical thinking. In other words, the less the electorate knows about your intentions the better. We are merely tools to be manipulated toward their candidate's grab for power. No need to communicate forthrightly and make us a part of the conversation and the solutions. posted 03/25/2008 at 07:35:16

I saw the same interview. Rover tactics all over - now, if Obama merely disagrees with Clinton, that is called an attack by her handlers. The Republicans perfected this technique. Queen Hillary is not be questioned or refuted. Sorry, but (subject of this morning's interview), if she claims she should be voted on on the basis of experience, then she has to expect her claims of coming under enemy fire on Bosnia despite the reports of those who with her that she did not to be questioned. Why should her touted experience be beyond question. We are simply to take her word for it? Merely questioning her, especially when she is inconsistent with others who shared an experience with her, is NOT attacking. If they wanted to attack her they would just call her a liar. The are not doing that an they will not do that.
By the way, Woflson never refuted that claim that she did not come under fire as she had claimed. But, like Rove, he believes we are incapable of seeing through his dodges. posted 03/24/2008 at 13:01:19
