Kennedy v. Carter is the lesson that Democrats have (not) learned. Also, it was Ickes (currently of the Clinton camp) that threw the 1976 convention into turmoil during that nominating process. On top of that, Clinton's MO during this primary season has been to tear down the other Democratic candidate, creating somewhat of a rift between Democratic supporters.

That said, she has the right to continue until Obama has the requisite number of delegates -- and probably should. An interesting point was put forth in another HuffPo article (can't remember which one) that West Virginia and Kentucky, since they will solidly go for Clinton, would be somewhat of an embarrassment to Obama and the Democratic Party -- and would likely be an embarrassment to Clinton if she ended or suspended her campaign before those primaries.

As far as political longevity, however, a contentious floor battle at the convention could spoil not only Obama's -- and the Democratic Party's -- chances during the election, it could possibly brand Clinton as a spoiler, which with her fairly high negatives (let's be honest) would probably bar her chances at another run to be the Democratic presidential candidate, and could even jeopardize her Senate seat. posted 05/14/2008 at 12:11:48

Fineman offered up the analogy of fighters in a ring and the analogy of an adult taking a child into a room. So I get it if it's keeping with the boxing analogy -- big deal -- she wants people to know she's a fighter -- it's kind of like "if you can't stand the heat...."

And the adult taking a child into a room to give him or her a timeout -- two (or more) walk in and one doesn't come out. Does that mean the adult beat the child until he or she couldn't come out? Not likely.
