in California, which at the time was the fifth largest economy in the world, and had one of the

failure on many levels, first was the state school board that adopted these texts, secondly was
the idiot publishers who would print or promote them, and lastly how no one seemed to be

I was a little sketchy in my original reply, I very much appreciate Tibetan Buddhism,
and other than the loss of life, deeply regret the loss of a profound contribution to
the world's spirituality. Helping them, as we did the Afghanis against the Russians,
very much depends on their own world view., and is not to be imposed from the

of just how aggressive a nation they can be. The quote is not exact, but it was no

I think Shelly is dead on. Getting us up to Gigabyte bandwidths, will totally change our society and
the way we do business. I happen to have a Classical CD collection of 2500 CD's, the important
thing is not the physical presence of those CDs, but the knowledge of what I consider superb
performances. The same thing is true of my DVD collection. It also has the effect of democratizing
distribution, in that symphony orchestras and other artists can be the masters of their own
fate, rather than the thrall of the big recording companies. It could also have the same liberating
effect on book publishing and independent movie makers. One key factor that was needed was
low cost terabyte hard disks, and the other is low cost monitors with resolutions on the order of

I was really talking about the Balkanization of networks. I actually feel that it
would be good if the government controlled the railroad network and the
current railroads operated as transportation companies, that could provide
service on any portion of the rail network. Competition would result in lower
prices. Check with any North Dakota farmer, if they would not like seeing
BNSF have to compete. The electric power grid would be another good

Years ago, I had this discussion with a very intelligent Republican conservative. He had been a
physiologist with the Harry Diamond Labs (military), about the idea that anything the government
does will be done wrong. He offered up the idea, that government should own the networks, and
allow anyone to do business over them. A prime example, would be the interstate highway system,
imagine what a disaster it would be, if split into myriad chunks, owned by private enterprise. The
same is true of the internet, the companies have no incentive to upgrade bandwidth, as long as
they have a monopoly. Let government own the basic network, and let service providers, have to
compete for your business posted 03/28/2008 at 20:42:15

on the internet, and doesn't owe them squat. Doesn't anyone remember the damage done
to the Democrats by the Clinton's at the midterm election, who wants them screwing up the
Democratic party, for another eight years. posted 03/28/2008 at 00:07:18

Sen. Kyl Tries to Pin Blame For Economic Mess on Democrats, 'Minorities,' 'The Poor,' and 'The Young'

Smears and Tears: How Obama's National Security Week Turned Into the Mendacity of Hype

I once used to respect Ambassador Wilson. I now regard him as little more than a political
hack for Hillary. I still think, however, that his wife is a fox, and probably the more intelligent
of the two. posted 03/26/2008 at 21:20:47

Paul Krugman Slams...Hillary

Nippersdad, very interesting,
I found among the republican
candidates, that the only one
who didn't make me want to
hurl, was Ron Paul. Mind you,
I'd never want to let a libertarian
steer the ship of state, but there
are still areas of civil rights, that
we and I think even the ACLU
could agree upon posted 03/29/2008 at 03:57:05
Nippersdad, I thought your posts were both
intelligent and well thought out. I've also read
most of Rand's books, and have dismissed
them. I had just gotten out of the Army, after
having been drafted, and became involved
with a lovely woman, who loved Ayn Rand. I
found that while I could appreciate many of
her qualities, I couldn't stomach Rand. Her
philosophy of objectivism caused he to order
the most expensive item on the menu, when
my visiting aunt and uncle took us to dinner.
When I explained to her, that for a first time
meeting, it wasn't too discrete. Her argument
was that it hadn't cost me anything, I explained
to her that I found he behavior embarrassing,
and picked up our tab. I've never dated a
libertarian-objectivist since. posted 03/29/2008 at 02:27:34
I have read most of Ayn Rand's books, and most of Nathaniel
Brandon's. I am more impressed with Brandon' s, whereas
I am more than a little disturbed, by Rand's heroines, being
raped by strong willed men. I happen to be a man, and I
think I could safely say that if Ann Coulter and I were the last
human beings on this earth, it would be the end or the
human race. I also think she is an even bigger idiot than Ayn
Rand. P.S. I should have called her an amoral moron. posted 03/29/2008 at 00:07:16
I read Atlas Shrugged 41 years ago. I guessed the entire course of the
book after about five pages. The entire speech by John Galt, which is
based on syllogistic reasoning, is utter nonsense, based on what she
thinks is the nature of man. All I can say, is every professor of Zoology,
Anthropology, Psychology, and Sociology, would be rolling in the aisles.
Her arguments are by exhortation, and bear a remarkable similarity to
the Marquis de Sade in Justine. I consider her little more than an
immoral moron. Always thought Nathaniel Brandon was the brains. posted 03/28/2008 at 00:36:03
Your post is mostly nonsense. Just go to nytimes.com, click on opinion, click on
Paul Krugman, and read his earlier posts. I'm assuming you can read, and even
more importantly understand. posted 03/28/2008 at 00:19:13
Simply go to nytimes.com, click on opinion, click on Paul Krugman, and read his
editorials in recent months for Hillary. posted 03/26/2008 at 19:48:19
I for one, am gratified to see Krugman exhibit a more balanced approach. I used to enjoy
his editorials, before they became rants for Hillary posted 03/26/2008 at 18:59:34

McCain, Iraq, and Bush's Third Term

Molly Ivins and Lou Dubose in their book "Bushwacked", gave us great deal of insight into Bush's
brain, or lack thereof. As for McCain, I regard him as a murderous old fool, who is still fighting his
demons from the Viet Nam war. It really is time to stop the slaughter, particularly of our own young
men and women, and get the hell out of Iraq. posted 03/26/2008 at 03:59:37

Obama: Even the Conservatives' Right Choice

Even my brother in law, who is a right wing troll and loves Drudge and Limbaugh, is seriously

Limbaugh's Lying Voters Under Investigation

This happened in California, and with a little luck, you could probably google up the
details. Apparently, federal law is very strict on discouraging voting, unless you are
Hispanic, Black, or an American Indian. As a liberal, I still thought the bumper
sticker was amusing. posted 03/25/2008 at 21:18:02
A very interesting post, I remember a number of years ago, where an individual got in serious
trouble for sending out a bumper sticker that said, :"Don't vote, it only encourages the bastards."
I thought it was quite funny, but the judge did throw the book at him. posted 03/25/2008 at 18:38:48

"Obama's Test" or Ours?

I find you're reference to Cuba as an example amusing, unfortunately
our government has been doing everything in their power to screw
them over, and faulting Cuba or Castro for that seems disingenuous. posted 03/31/2008 at 02:05:54
You're post is again nonsensical, there really is no connection
between socialism and communism. Surprisingly, I thing the
Socialist movement began with Germany's Otto Von Bismark,
who I think most people would describe as a reactionary posted 03/31/2008 at 01:52:20
I read your link your link, which I think is dead on, but ignores one key
little argument, mainly big business hates competing, and much prefers
subverting government, to give them a competitive edge. posted 03/31/2008 at 01:34:23
I agree with your post, I think every American would do well to read
"Takeover: The Return of the Imperial Presidency and the Subversion
of American Democracy" by Charlie Savage posted 03/31/2008 at 01:23:03
Sorry, I should have included a book by William Blum, called "Killing Hope", which
details every CIA and military involvement since WWII. The book does not make
one proud to be an American. I think, however, that you'll conclude that our
government has done everything possible, to stamp out any vestige of
socialism. posted 03/30/2008 at 17:34:47
I think your post is a bit nonsensical, I'll include two links that I think dispute your claim.

The first is: http://www.rationalrevolution.net/articles/understanding_fascism.htm

The second is: http://www.rationalrevolution.net/articles/rise_of_american_fascism.htm

The gentlemen who wrote these articles does not strike me as having an ax to grind, but
as a serious scholar of history. You're free to disagree. posted 03/30/2008 at 17:16:31
research, This problem is far older than you imagine, read Livy's "The Early History of
Rome", Penguin books had an excellent translation, and I was so impressed, that I'm
not sure I would grant the franchise to anyone, until they had read the book, and could
demonstrate their understanding. posted 03/30/2008 at 16:39:29
