I think the delegates won through the primaries and caucuses are locked up until the second ballot at the convention. But the superdelegates can change their minds at any time, and so maybe they will switch to Obama before the convention if he is close enough and put him over the top? It would be an act of patriotism in my eyes. posted 03/29/2008 at 11:23:33

I think it is wonderful that Stewart is doing this, but I wouldn't want to force anyone to do so. Jon may have just the right personality to do this, and Olberman, whose heart we know is in the right place, may be more of an introvert or too reserved to be effective. Just saying. Reid: "Things Are Being Done" To End Dem Primary Before Convention

I keep seeing posters who were Clinton supporters who are giving up on her. There may be some who will go with her but not as many as the media says. She certainly would be toxic to an Obama campaign. Do you want someone who was either lying or fantasizing about Kosovo being a heartbeat away from the presidency? And she has been so nasty to Obama that I wouldn't trust what the Clintons might do during a general campaign to sabotage him. posted 03/25/2008 at 18:58:10
I disagree. I think they realize that it will blow the party apart if the nomination is handed to her in any other way than what everyone agreed to before the start of the campaign. There are cracks in the Clinton campaign which signal the end of their control over the party. The media has been very afraid of the Clinton camp too but that is starting to change. Personally, I think the turning point was when Clinton gave her speech on how both she and John McCain had crossed some threshhold to be commander-in-chief while Obama didn't. She went beyond the pale there. posted 03/25/2008 at 18:53:47

I think Nancy is spreading her wings a little now that Hillary's candidacy is uncertain and the Clintons' power over the Democratic Party is weakening. Mike Gravel in one of the early debates said that the front runner has a big say in what the party's members of Congress pursue, and for so long Hillary Clinton was "the presumed front runner" and "the inevitable". Clinton, Obama Backers Go Off Message On Fox News Sunday

And I just switched from 35 years of being an independent to Democratic so that I can vote for Obama in the Oregon primary, one of the last. I don't want to see the remaining primaries canceled. It would be neither democratic nor Democratic, but the campaign the Clintons are running scares me shitless, and the so called reasoning of Gov. Rendell is one example. I think in June Obama will have majorities in the popular vote, the delegate count, the superdelegate count and the number of states he won. Neither is going to have the 2000 + number needed, however, and Clinton will be willing to blow the party apart to try to sabotage Obama's chances in November. She thinks that she has one more chance in 2012, but she doesn't. The Clintons' power in the Democratic Party has been broken, and no matter what kind of face she would try to paint on in 2012, the voters will never forget her conduct of the 2008 campaign nor that of her surrogates. posted 03/23/2008 at 16:08:04

Clinton, Obama Reconciliation Becoming More And More Impossible

Senator Obama tries and tries to remain civil with Clinton, saying that after the primaries he will continue to be her friend. I think he is succeeding at portraying himself as the one who consistently takes the high road, but it is only being politically correct. For myself, there is no way I would want to see Clinton on a ticket with Obama even in second place. She wants him to lose in November if she doesn't get the nod so that she could have one last chance four years from now. She would add nothing to his campaign, and Obama would be perceived as an utter hypocrite to suddenly become friends with someone who has done so much to hurt his chances in November. There is no way, for instance, that she or her husband could explain away their commander in chief bull shit. And I also think that the Clintons' hold on the party has been broken, and she would not be its nominee in 2012 for anything in the world. posted 03/23/2008 at 15:39:24

Catholic-Bashing

I am genuinely sorry to cast cold water on your new faith, and if this is how you see it, fine, by all means stay in the church. I was a so-called Cradle Catholic. Not too long ago we watched a documentary on the pedophilia scandal, a film which was up for an Academy Award in 2007. There was a wonderful, exceptional priest in it who works with SNAP named Thomas Doyle who summed up the relationship between the laity and the clergy/hierarchy in this way: Pay, Pray, Obey and Keep Your Mouths Shut. I wish you the best, and maybe you are in a diocese with a thoughtful, intelligent, and educated bishop and priests, but we have found during the course of our lives that the Rev. Thomas Doyle is spot-on. posted 03/22/2008 at 20:37:35
My wife and I are recovering Catholics since January, but we still read about the church whenever we see it covered. I have to tell Mr. Leo, if you are a practicing Catholic, I have run up against dead silence from your clergy and hierarchy on the subject of Rev. Hagee. I think the Catholic church is so committed to the single issue of abortion, that it is willing to be shat upon by its so-called allies on the fundamentalist and evangelical sides. It is also willing to dance with the devil in political alliances to achieve that end even though the particular political party is only using them for its own purposes and often in contravention of the teachings of the official catechism of the church, for example, preemptive warfare and capital punishment. The other day I received a catalog from Ignatius Press with an advertised book by Laura Ingraham, famous Catholic convert and right-wing radio talk show host, the same Laura Ingraham who recently advocated, along with Rush Limbaugh, sabotage of the democratic process by Republicans becoming Democrats for a single day in order to vote for the candidate they see as being more easily defeated in November. There are more atheists who have a higher ethical standard than that. I have become a member of the the thinking man's Catholic church, the Episcopal church, but I join others above who call for a total separation of church and state in this country. Until then, we will have cross-contamination of both the churches and the political parties which may bring this country down. posted 03/22/2008 at 11:45:53

I hope you are talking to the Democratic leadership. I don't know how many e-mails I have sent them, and they probably think I am some lunatic. I never expect personal replies, but to be honest, I never read anything which tells me they are doing anything about the Clintons. I don't think it is indifference, but I'd bet the Clintons are both set at hair-trigger to throw a law suit at the party any chance they could get. You see clues here and there like Nancy Pelosi's comments and now the Richardson endorsement, but The Clintons just will not leave, no matter who talks to them. I don't mind going through the end of the primaries because I think it's the democratic and Democratic thing to do (live in Oregon one of the last), but the way the Clintons are playing just scares the hell out of me. I think the Democratic leadership had better make up its mind to declare Obama the winner if the following factors end up in his favor, which I think will happen: majorities in delegate count, superdelegate count, number of states, and popular vote. I think Obama will have all of those but not reach that magical mark of 2025 or whatever. But you can't let the Clinton camp go into the convention hall with this unsettled or they will blow the place apart. Phew! I usually don't talk so much. posted 03/22/2008 at 11:18:46
I thought Clinton's "other stuff" comment was jealousy over Obama's race speech. Some pundit wrote somewhere that the only way Hillary can win now is to destroy Obama. They are sure trying, but no matter how many times they shove Obama into a bucket of shit, he comes up smelling like roses. That's because most of the country is on to their game. They have made several attempts to impugn Obama's patriotism: this latest remark, all the false Muslim madrassa smears, the commander-in-chief test, the photo of Obama in African garb, Rev. Wright's words. . . I still have questions about who was snooping in Obama's State Department files and why. It wasn't idle curiosity, and all of a sudden, when someone was caught with their pants down, Hillary and McCain are supposedly spied on too. I don't trust anything from either Bill or Hillary Clinton. Now, are you sure you are an Obama supporter? posted 03/22/2008 at 11:02:14

Probably the party affiliation thing doesn't matter to the Clintons at all. Just use whichever party can do the most for you. Also, they may be looking for just one more last chance: back McCain now so Obama loses '08, McCain is a one term president, and Clinton runs again in 2012. I think that's risky because they are breaking their pick with the Democratic Party including those who back Hillary right now, and the Dems are not going to give them a second chance after the kind of campaign they have conducted. posted 03/22/2008 at 10:49:37

A Few Unanswered Questions About Bill Richardson's Obama Endorsement

Wasn't the point of the superdelegates to be able to vote their own judgment and conscience? I thought it arose so that if the electorate picked somebody really over the top, e.g., a neo Nazi, the superdelegates would be able to prevent the party from committing suicide. I don't see that they should necessarily reflect the electorate. What, for example, would you do in a state where the two candidates are very, very close in the votes. "Oh well, it's nothing but curiosity, and it happened to all three. Nothing to see here, folks, move on." posted 03/21/2008 at 12:27:23
Condi is already characterizing the Obama breaches as "curiosity". Isn't that sort of announcing the verdict before the investigation? Same thing Clinton supporter Larry Johnson did on Larry King last night. posted 03/21/2008 at 12:16:58
You have no way of knowing so keep your opinions coming out of your ass to yourself at the moment, please. It's kind of like you're saying, "Nothing to see here, folks, just move along." posted 03/20/2008 at 22:28:14
