The Latest Media Blind Spot: Viewing All Criticism of Obama Through a Right/Left Prism

Hear, hear!

"...nothing is more important, especially for real leaders, than doing whatever it takes to stay true to themselves. And that starts with something ostensibly very simple but very important: getting enough sleep."

One of Obama's key strengths is his self-knowledge; his own ability to discern the truth that his to express. The American people are rightly relying on him to "stay true" to his own self and his own core principles. If he doesn't do that one thing, we will have lost the distinctive leadership quality that we most need in these times.

This capacity to be true to himself and his core principles while simultaneously being open to multiple viewpoints is precisely what allows Obama to nuance and transcend, to not be put in a specific liberal or progressive or other kind of box, and to help usher in a more inclusive, effective, and wise politics. If Obama "falls prey to the Conventional Wisdom sirens," sure, he may still win the White House (maybe), but the vision is lost, the "moment" that was ours is gone.

Arianna's observation about sleep is astute; I hope Obama hears it. posted 07/15/2008 at 01:32:56

Reid: "Things Are Being Done" To End Dem Primary Before Convention

Re: (from the previous post): "So why is it that people seem to assume she is wrong for staying in? Huckabee stayed! And he was WAY farther behind, and did not get NEAR the flack for it. "

Huckabee did not get near the flack for staying in the race because he did not so flagrantly violate basic human standards of decency and dignity in the campaign process, and did not seem to be attempting to rip his party apart by making the frontrunner unelectable in November.

We need to begin to distinguish here: the reason Hillary's staying in the race is an issue is not because she is choosing to stay in, it's HOW she is choosing to stay in. I don't think most people would have ever objected if she had run a cleaner campaign. Hillary's campaign standards have violated even many of the Old Guard Democrats' standards for political campaigns. There is a legitimate fear in the party that the Republicans in November will use Hillary's false accusations and smears against Obama to garner support for the Republican candidate. posted 03/29/2008 at 09:43:45
