How The 'Dream Ticket' Can Become A Nightmare

I'm glad he wrote it -- it was the first time I'd seen this scenario described -- hadn't thought about the VP vote at the convention. He's right, actually. Have you read the many Huffpo blogs promoting this? Can you think of any other reason HRC is "never giving up"?
Granted she spoke up for Obama today against Bush's insane remarks in Israel - and she did it well -- we've seen too many bad sides of her to believe very seriously she could turn it around on a 24/7 basis. I say let HER be "poverty czar" or head HEW. If she means what she says about helping the little guy, give her a (limited) shot. posted 05/15/2008 at 21:43:48

Feminists sharply divided between Clinton, Obama

Well, I read an article on Huffpo yesterday that really nails the character issue for both Bill and Hillary. I'd forgotten this, but when they left the White House they took furniture and rugs THAT WEREN'T THEIRS and had to return them. And Hillary's brothers got Bill to pardon crooks they were beholden to in his final insane blitz of pardons. I do remember now ignoring this info with a pang of dismay. Now, however, I see the larger pattern of opportunism, the same pattern upon which her own political career was built, especially her campaign. posted 05/10/2008 at 17:21:41

Clinton's Hail Mary

We're no longer dealing with logical perception here. Hillary's defenders sound as though they have been caught up in and identify completely with her malestrom of self-proclaimed victimhood. When you're hurting yourself, an enormous coping mechanism kicks in to find others to band together with against a common enemy. It legitimizes your own pain and the anger gives the illusion of strength.

To then see that cause's champion lose the high ground must feel like defeat multiplied to the nth degree. And it may be impossible to not take it personally -- and apply it to one's own struggles.

I've been thinking about this phenominon since Edwards dropped out but his blog when on. Over and over the bloggers plotted and, yes, whined about his defection when they weren't mounting campaigns against the new common enemy: trolls. Fortunately, Edwards finally shut the blog down after a few weeks.

In other words, one's personal story and needs and coping mechanisms are of course going to be the filter through which political alliances are forced. I think it's fortunate (in fact wondrous!) that we have the choice of a candidate who inspires unity instead of providing a rallying point for one's personal grievances.

Today a Huffpo blogger talked about the history of women's suffrage, saying that Susan B. Anthony and Eliz. Cady Stanton set back feminism 50 years by putting forth the argument that white women's votes would help counter the black male vote. Is Hillary any different in her divisiveness? posted 05/10/2008 at 20:30:03

Election 2008

In Obama's historic speech in April, he said one thing that resonates throughout this campaign -- that Wright's problem wasn't what he believed, it was that he couldn't believe things could change.

Earlier tonight I read about former mayor Ed Koch saying Obama can't win. I lived in NYC while he was mayor and loved him. But I realized he, too, is stuck in a rapidly decaying mind set.

Just 6 months ago I was saying that this country does not elect a woman or a black man. But Obama is more than that -- he's a multicultural inspiration to change.

And Hillary? She's a part of the old mind set -- and prey to all its nastiest vagaries. I can't think of any better way to unite the Republicans behind McCain than to have him face the Clintons.

Even with HRCs recent pandering about the gas tax holiday, which worried me, I was pleased to discover that the electorate isn't all that gullible after all and have proven willing to see the truth. That's the result of the fresh air of decency and honesty blowing through the campaign. We can finally expect business as usual to take a back seat to integrity.

Mr. Valeriani, I recognized your name and remembered your sign-offs and contribution to broadcast news. However, as with Koch, you might consider the possiblity that change not only CAN happen, it IS happening right under our noses. I'm both old enough and young enough to be glad posted 05/08/2008 at 01:58:39

Pandering vs. Presidential

The MSNBC talking heads said it would even be a good thing if she kept up through W VA and KY because he can't win them and it would give her a positive send off and save face for him -- rather than lose to someone no longer in the race.

So long as the tone is no longer negative, there can be mending. I think Obama's followers will take his lead. It's his decency that has drawn so many in the first place. If his is the way presidential politics CAN be played out, it's an example for the whole country -- and both parties, too. Very refreshing. posted 05/07/2008 at 03:21:32

The Hillary As President Tour Of America

I've been saying this for months... And this is the only place I hear it back. How can it not be obvious that she will govern (?) the country the way she governs (?) her campaign: badly.
I do think the writer had plenty of proven material without bringing Bill into it -- he's just an extra added bonus of badly-ness.
I've heard for months about the fact that her staff is in fear of her and afraid to tell her what she doesn't want to hear. And given her seemingly endless delusions of grandeur, God help us if we have another 4-8 years of THAT!

My conclusion: As in 2000 and 2004, this country will get the president it deserves. And it may just NOT deserve a brilliant and decent man in a jungle of diseased wolves. Our future really does hang in the balance here -- and not enough people are paying attention to the painfully obvious show that's going on here. posted 05/04/2008 at 22:55:38

I just read an enlightening article on Common Dreams (link below) that supplies a history of the collusion between business and government to promote the dumbing down of America inorder to create a consumerism society in which people are too busy with work and materialism to have time to participate in democracy, leaving the elite free to control. See the quote below the link from the article. It explains a lot about why corporate-driven media avoids certain stories and pushes others.

http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2008/05/03/8686/

"According to Edward Bernays, one of the founders of the field of public relations and a principal architect of the American Way, the choices available in the polling booth are akin to those at the department store; both should consist of a limited set of offerings that are carefully determined by what Bernays called an "invisible government" of public-relations experts and advertisers working on behalf of business leaders. Bernays claimed that in a "democratic society" we are and should be "governed, our minds . . . molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of." In fact, she called eviscerating Obama "THE FUN PART"!!!!!!! I'm not making that up. And let me say I was saddened by the true-blue Hillary supporters who have written in these comments. It's unfortunate that they have been so betrayed because they are so patently sincere. I'm sorry, and I don't suppose you'll ever see the real Hillary. It's unfortunate how many true-blue Bush supporters STILL can't see his. Unfortunately, the rest of us have to live in the world he's created (his "own" reality) and the one she'd create. The very fact that there's a fairy tale that this policy emulates tells us what an aspect of human nature this is -- and how ultimately transparent (pardon the pun). There are too many troubling similarities: secrecy (her health-care meetings during his 1st term), elitism (her membership in the fashistic evangelical "prayer breakfast" organization that believes only the elite should govern), her imperial arrogance that believes only she is right and entitled to govern. Why Younger Women Aren't Supporting Hillary

I'm a 60-year-old woman who was a charter subscriber to Ms. Magazine and an ardent feminst at that time.

I do not believe that the feminist agenda, important as it is, should supercede the needs of the county. Why shouldn't we say "not this woman?" Why MUST it be this woman -- this woman with her complicated past and conflicted present.

The question MUST be: Who is best for the country NOW? And at this juncture, we do not need someone who can't get her story straight, either on her experience or on the criteria for getting the nomination.

I have found her apparent sense of entitlement offensive for a long time. She reeks of power-hunger and absence of transparency. And that's the LAST quality we need to take over Bush's imperial presidency. We need someone who will first and foremost repair the damage to the Constitution. I don't trust her to do that because she's given me no reason to.

She has been quoted as saying that tearing down Obama is "the fun part." I can't possibly find that an inspiring quality in anyone, and it's abjectly NOT a desirable quality in a president.

Screw "politics as usual." Obama's contention for this country is that things don't have to be the way they were. I trust that under his inclusive umbrella, gender, race and wealth equality will be promoted and will evolve.

To me, THAT is the most feminist agenda in the world. posted 04/04/2008 at 13:33:53

Obama Sees Pennsylvania The Way It's Meant To Be Seen: By Bus

Walmart has a history of bad practices that ranges from discrimination against women (lower pay than men and fewer promotions) to telling workers to get their health care from local county facilities (meaning taxpayers provide health care for many Walmart workers). Also, they tend to freeze out local businesses. Also, they have been known to bring in new vendors by telling them they must supplty Walmart exclusively -- then they start lowering the amount they pay these vendors, ruining many of them. Also, they have been know to close stores rather than deal with unions. Also, they reportedly locked in workers overnight for "security" purposes. The list goes on and on and on. The latest I heard on Countdown and other sources: A woman in their employ was hit by a truck and ended up in a nursing home in a wheelchair and memory loss. She received $417,000 in compensation. Walmart, claiming they paid $400,000 to her in medical costs, promptly SUED HER for the $400,000. Adding to this, the woman's son was recently killed in Iraq and, due to her lessened mental capacity, she forgets this so that every time she asks where her son is, she is told her son is dead, it's as if for the first time. Nice people. And need I mention obscenely rich and desiring to create a Walmart ecvonomy wherein no one can affort to shop (or work) anywhere else. Enough of a reason? posted 03/31/2008 at 22:55:29

I was going to college in Boston in 1968. I remember being at Boston's Logan Airport late one night in February, getting the Eastern Airlines shuttle to New York when the only other occupants in the same area of the terminal were Robert F. Kennedy and his aides. I jumped at the chance to get an autograph on my bording pass which I still have. When I really listened to the unusual honesty and intelligence Obama offers, I was hooked. And when I thought about his vulnerability, it brought me back to 1968 -- and I realized the 40-year gap of having a candidate to trust to do what's right for the people and not the special interests. Obama has re-enfranchised a lot of people who have been hungry for 40 years. I read a post by one such here on Huffpo who called us OBoomers. Agreed. And think about this... the way she campaigns would be the way she governs. Can't you just picture her whining that some foreign leader was mean to her or the foreign press was being unfair? I didn't trust her when Bill was president. I wanted to but I learned quickly I couldn't. Shame. posted 03/21/2008 at 12:18:57

Playing Political Catch Up with the Rest of the World

The American presidency is not a consolation prize for victims of any kind of discrimination. It's not a prize or tape measure of any kind, period.

This is a serious leadership position that should only be awarded to serious leaders. The author Douglas Adams went so far as to stipulate that the only people who should be elected are those who don't want the office in the first place.

Impossible as that may be, I do think we have a choice between someone who wants to game the system to get the office by any means (the kitchen sink comment came from HRTs campaign as an admission that the only way to win would be to tear BHO down) and someone who was willing to risk his candicay by telling the truth.

I don't want a president who HAS to win at all costs. Will she play the victime card with foreign leaders and whine about being unfairly treated on the world stage? Will she strike out of anger at being one-upped by Al-Quaida. Can we afford the temperament she displays as a candidate? I believe that the way she runs her campaign would be the way she governs. And, no, we can't afford that. To have just any woman as president is a luxury we CANNOT afford.

May the more honest, thoughtful, transparent and non-desperate candidate win. posted 03/20/2008 at 23:57:48
