Just because oil is strategically important doesn't mean it stops being about greed. They could have easily pressured the Iraqis into an arrangement generous to both sides, but instead they sent too few troops with too little equipment and allowed people to die by the hundred of thousands while they try - unsuccessfully so far - to make the Iraqis give away the oil out of gratitude. And with Iran they're not even trying to update their fabrications.
