Pennsylvania Exit Polls: Primary Results

Hillary is successfully using the Bush "Connecticut Cowboy" tactics to win blue collar voters.

Blue collar Bush in 2000? He's an oil scion whose name was a free pass to Andover, Yale, and Harvard. Gore grew up on a farm in Tennessee!

Clinton is worth 100 Million dollars, and is only still hanging on because of blue collar voters.

Where's the logic in this? Edwards was clearly doomed from the beginning because he grew up in a genuinely blue collar family... so *obviously* he stood no chance of winning those votes. posted 04/22/2008 at 19:42:05

On Course For Another White Guy Election

Obama has also won roughly twice as many states as Clinton. Most electoral votes, most popular votes, most states won, 5 times as much fundraising...

Yeah, it's definitely time for that guy to hang up his hat in defeat.

Because? Because Hillary "won" Florida? The state whose primary doesn't even count? The state that gave us 8 years of an illiterate goon in the White House? That makes sense. posted 04/22/2008 at 15:03:27

Bill Clinton: Hillary Would Be Winning Under GOP Primary Rules

This is similar to Hillary voting to ban Michigan and Florida's votes because they broke the rules. And then she won there AND needed their votes, and so now she's saying "I wouldn't want to disenfranchise those voters."

Well yeah, not NOW. Now that you NEED them. But back when it was time to vote on it, you had no problem disenfranchising them. Because you didn't think it would ever matter. posted 04/21/2008 at 23:00:35

White Men

Why do you read the PA race as a question of voting AGAINST Obama or AGAINST Clinton, rather than FOR either candidate?

In a race in which voter populations have been increased so dramatically, enthusiasm seems to be a more significant factor than antipathy.

If the case were simply a matter of white males (a huge voting block in many states that have already voted) - why isn't Edwards still in the race? Why didn't Edwards win Iowa, having campaigned there vociferously for so long? How is it that he placed 2nd in Iowa, and no better than 3rd in ANY OTHER STATE? That's the result of people voting AGAINST Hillary and Barack? That 49% voting bloc should have elected Edwards, and allowed Obama and Clinton to split the minority / female blocs.... Edwards would have won every state.

On top of the flawed and unsupportable logic, your post reads as an angry conflation of the personal and the political. Why are you trying to force your readers to see this race in such irrelevant terms as race and gender, when we should all be thinking about policy, ideology, qualifications, etc.? posted 04/21/2008 at 01:22:09

"Slash-And-Burn" Vs. "The Kitchen Sink"

Hillary is a Senator and spends most of the year in DC. Bill's offices are in Harlem. It's not a coincidence.

As to why he's blowing her chances.... he's either aged DRAMATICALLY in recent years, and he's got some McCain syndrome going on... or he genuinely doesn't want her to win and is orchestrating a loss. As to why, that's open to speculation.

It would make a great question for Hillary at the next debate though!! posted 04/20/2008 at 22:44:05
If you stand out as an outcast from the entire party, you are not mainstream, it's a simple fact. Rumsfeld could go on TV and announce he was a Democrat, and it would mean about as much as if Lieberman were to do so.

Also, his party did not move left while he stayed the same... think of the Dem party from 50 years ago... did they look like Lieberman? They looked like JFK. How about Carter? Does Lieberman remind you of him?

And while we're talking parties being taken over by the radical fringe... I'm pretty sure that's the Republicans' problem. posted 04/20/2008 at 22:42:01
I've been wondering the same thing... but that wouldn't get her elected... it would get McCain elected. So, if that's the case, maybe she'll just run as his VP? She's been talking for months about how great and qualified he is...

Well, maybe she could win as an Indy, ala Lieberman, if HUGE numbers of Republicans figure that McCain has ZERO chance, and they vote for her as a vote "against Obama"... but I think that's a long shot... I don't think the Rep. base could stomach voting for Hillary just to prevent Obama from winning. I don't put it past her to try though. posted 04/20/2008 at 22:33:19

Karl Rove Offers Mind-Bending Take On 'Flag Lapel Pin' Issue

Aren't the flag lapel pins made in China?!

So apparently RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT isn't very patriotic, but spending twenty cents on a lead-based knick-knack from China, providing a job to someone who took a job away from an American, supporting a communist regime with a terrible human rights record -- THAT is patriotic.

Serving as a US Senator doesn't prove you love America, but adding another twenty cents to the Chinese war chest does?

Thankfully Hillary wasn't wearing one in that debate, otherwise I'm sure someone would have pointed out her support for Chinese labor as opposed to say Pennsylvanian labor. I'm sure George and Charlie would have been all over it! posted 04/20/2008 at 17:26:46

John McCain, Charles Grassley Physical Altercation Confirmed By Washington Post

So McCain is going to lose it against his opponent... but if it's Hillary, she might start crying, no?

I wonder who would look better in that situation... Would we vote for the bully who made the woman cry, or the sobbing "victim" Senator who nobody believes has emotions anyway?

I think Obama would do very well against McCain's tirades. He certainly seems to keep his composure better than any other candidate. And that very quality would probably provoke the crap out of McCain. posted 04/20/2008 at 13:27:10

Debate Analysis: ABC Asked Most Scandal Questions, Obama Was Clear Target

To clarify the statements of nurse practitioner "sf94127" --

1. The U of Chicago already settled the Law Prof. issue. Look it up.

2. Obama can't stop people who "work for companies" donating to his campaign. But the VAST majority of his donations are very small and from many people, while Clinton's are much larger and from fewer people. Hillary was also on the BOARD OF WALMART. Again, look it up.

3. "NBC is totally anti-Clinton, they mock her 10:1 versus Obama" -- you have something to back this up, right? Like the article does? Oh wait, the person writing the article actually went to some effort, which is much more work than just making facts up. 10:1? Are you sure? Are you sure it wasn't maybe 15:1? While you're making things up, why not 100:1?

4. A nurse practitioner is more or less a doctor. WOW. Um, no. Not even CLOSE. Ask your doctor their opinion on that one. And then, just for comparison, go ask a full, tenured law professor if they consider Obama's statement untrue or insulting. I suspect (and here I am speaking without statistics, except that I've asked Drs. and Law Profs.) that you'll get wildly different responses. posted 04/20/2008 at 17:20:14

Obama Out of Touch With Pennsylvania? Every Major Paper There Backs Him

How is it that the guy winning on ALL THREE COUNTS is the one destroying the party?

Clinton's Odds: Time And Delegate Math Not In Her Favor

Also, it was Hillary that voted FOR the enforcement of the DNC rules that banned FL and MI... of course, that was back when she thought this would be a piece of cake.... now that she needs those votes, desperately, to even come close to catching up.... all of a sudden NOW she appreciates those two states.

At this point, I'm just curious to see what her spin is when Obama gets the nomination... will she pull a Lieberman, and run as an Independent, split the Dem vote, and guarantee McCain's victory, ala Nader?

I wouldn't put it past her. Maybe she won't bother and she'll just run as McCain's VP, having done so much to help him already. posted 04/19/2008 at 17:29:45

Polygamist Ranch Women Give Today Show Interview, Deny Sexual Abuse Claims

In fact, they see themselves as MORE Mormon than the modern, Salt Lake-based LDS. The LDS disowned them a long time ago, but if you look at how Mormonism was originally practiced back in the days of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, it was MUCH closer to these guys, the FLDS, than it was to the "modern day" Mormons in Utah.

So actually, these people are Mormons in the truest sense of the word, in that they adhere to the stated guidelines in the Book of Mormon more closely than any other sect. posted 04/16/2008 at 14:37:47
The point about the welfare system is being overlooked. Americans are reacting against the Texas authorities by saying that this is an invasion of a private society by the public system. This "private society" however is funded ENTIRELY by our tax dollars. Recall how when their "prophet" was apprehended, he was driving a Cadillac Escalade through Vegas of all places, with tens of thousands in cash on him.

Then again, maybe the cash wasn't my tax dollars... given that he has God on speed dial, maybe he raked it in at the blackjack tables in Vegas. And yet God didn't tip him off about the fuzz. posted 04/16/2008 at 14:32:18

Bill Clinton Flashback: "All These Economically Insecure White People...Are Scared To Death"

Sophie,

Bill grew up in roughly the same economic conditions as Obama, and then attended Georgetown, Oxford, and Yale. On scholarships, just like Obama.

As for living off the mainland.... is that a jab at Hawaii? You have a problem with the state of Hawaii because it's an island? Maybe it's a jab at Indonesia... because of course living in a foreign country (as Bill did while at Oxford) is a terrible idea... it makes people narrow minded and unable to relate to foreign leaders.

As for foreign experience, if you're supporting McCain, he was born in Panama, and if you're supporting Hillary, she was almost shot by snipers in Bosnia! posted 04/15/2008 at 20:14:15

What Did Bill Clinton Do To Get $15M From Ron Burkle?

andyboy,

it's not that the african americans will vote for mccain. why would you make that assumption when such a tragically small percentage of our country votes at all? they'll just simply not vote if they feel disenfranchised by hillary being nominated.

it works to the republican advantage that only a fifth of our country votes... and the dems losing all those african american votes means mccain will win.

so the statement "all those kids, they'll be gone" - is actually far more true than you realize in your snide quip. they won't turn republican, they'll literally just not vote. they'll be gone from politics.

Ralph Nader Tells Clinton "Don't Listen" To People Telling You To Drop Out

Nader's percentage was too small to matter? WRONG. The fact is, if Nader made his point and then dropped out one day before the vote, and all his voters went to Gore, or even most of them, Gore would have won too obviously for Bush to have stolen it. So yes, say what you will, the FACT is that Nader could have made his point and then bowed out to save of from Bush. That would have been rather graceful.

The question is - what is Hillary's point? Nader knew he wasn't going to win... he was just making a point (a costly one) - but what point is Hillary making at this point, given that politically she's almost no different from Obama? Can someone explain that? posted 03/28/2008 at 20:35:14

University Of Chicago: Obama Was A Professor

As others have pointed out, Stephen forgets "Adjunct Professors" ...which are now the MAJORITY of faculty positions... as the NYT has pointed out repeatedly:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/20/education/20adjunct.html

Like Obama, who was something like an Adjunct, many have other careers they are pursuing. Some by choice, others by necessity created by under-funded universities. This in no way implies that they are not "professors" as opposed to something like guest lecturers.

But, the UofC press release, while not perfectly phrased, is from the horse's mouth. They can employ whatever system of terminology they choose. posted 03/28/2008 at 21:50:19
The press release was properly worded. They were clarifying the distinction between "SENIOR Lecturer" and just plain "Lecturer" -- the one is considered a professorship.

What they got wrong was the math. He was on their STAFF for 12 years, the final 8 of which was as a professor.

But the simple point is, he WAS a professor. Case closed. posted 03/28/2008 at 21:42:16

Senator Leahy To Clinton: Drop Out

Ok, so Clinton won California and New York.... do you REALLY think those states are going to vote for McCain if Obama is the nominee?? Texas and Ohio MIGHT be up for grabs, but only if all the Hillary supporters there vote for McCain! Which, given her near-endorsements of him, wouldn't surprise me.

Look at the number of voters that turned out for Dems as a whole vs. Reps as a whole.... unless a LOT of those Dems vote McCain, Obama would HANDILY win NY, CA, etc.

So how is it that Hillary's "I win the states that Gore and Kerry won while on their path to losing" make sense? You can win states that are a gimme? Congratulations. posted 03/28/2008 at 13:51:00
Drop out while winning? That makes a lot of sense.

Obama is winning:
1. pledged delegates
2. number of voters
3. number of states

Clinton is winning:
1. party insiders

So, Why is it that Obama should drop out? Clinton can talk about "all I hear is people telling me not to quit" all she wants. Doesn't that line sound an AWFUL LOT like Bush?? posted 03/28/2008 at 13:47:15
