I acquired my liberal politics from my parents. My father was a Russian Jewish immigrant and professor of history who spoke nine languages, so I guess that makes me an elitist. My father had survived the Holocaust and his liberalism never wavered. My mother came from a Bush-compatible Episcopalian old money family, but she shook off the shackles of her upbringing and was even more passionately liberal than I am.
Some fifty years of following politics and world events closely have only convinced me that sane liberal policies are generally best. So-called conservatives have dominated American politics for three decades, and look at the mess we're in.
My first priority is the right of the individual against encroachment by state power. My primary objection to the current Republican party is that it has lost its libertarian bearings and has become the authoritarian party. Government power must be limited and held accountable, and conservatives have been heading steadily in the opposite direction.
But ... there I go again.
